Best Coilovers?
Well I have an automatic and I DD it as it is my only car anyways. I bring it to car shows/meets. I don't plan on tracking it and making it a dyno monster because 1. automatic, 2. full-time student, 3. full-time employee. Anyways, it will mostly be a DD Show Car. My next mod will be going into coilovers or shocks/springs and I need advice according to what I will be using my car for. HELP!
To clarify.. I want coilovers or shocks/springs for DD, smoothness, and that flush look. I want to lower my car around 2-2.5" and slap 17" or 18" wheels on it. I'm going for the flush look. Money isn't too much of a factor, as am saving up for it and will also have my tax income. |
Why coilovers? Just to get it slammed?

It sounds like lowering springs would be best for you. Since it seems you care mostly about looks I would think it's the best for you. If I had to choose I would say KW V3 but those are very pricey for someone on a budget.
Quality and ride seem important as well and I would say the RCE is getting good reviews. |
The fact that you put KW's and Ksports into the same list tells me you're not really ready for coilovers.

Just from what I heard from others experiences, you could probably knock off the KSport and Megan from your list. I'd be skeptical if those were actually upgrades from our stock showa shocks |
These threads typically get the first question asked to quantify - what are the requirements for your car? You have answered, "I want show car slammed look with as good of ride quality as possible". With that in mind, the title of your thread will be misleading for people dropping by to vote, but not reading thread as they will just rate the coilovers they perceive as overall "best". In many cases "best" will mean different things to different people (best ride quality, best tracking, best flexibility (both off and on track), best from an ease of adjustment perspective, etc, etc...). So you might want to retitle thread "Best coilovers for show and ride quality".
Just a thought. Carry on. |
Define "best"
best for a cheap coilover and slamming the car? best for motorsports? best for all around driving and comfort? The answer to all of those questions is different. But it sounds like you just want it to be low so get whatever. At the ~$1000 price point it's all the same shit anyway. |
Tein SRC.
It's also by far the most expensive available from the included brands, but you get what you pay for. We're doing some additional testing this weekend at the track; we're taking 4 additional sets of springs to see what is the best setup for both handling at the tracks, while maintaining ride quality for street duty. |

for the OP: in terms of the best true damper, you don't even have them listed on the poll. |

Once you say DD for daily driver, I immediately say KW. I've had KW V2's on my vehicle for the last year, just got a new car, and looking to get KW's just after 300 miles on my brand new car, because I know KW will be comfortable for the street, but good enough for performance when I want to ramp it up.
I think that's probably why I get more KW orders than anything else :) |
I haven't done any performance mods as of yet. So performance being a factor in this decision right now, isn't really a concern

You don't need the C/O setup. A good, quality set of springs that give you just the right stance & ride quality will get the job done for you. The stock dampers (shocks) are plenty good. I'm kind of old school in that I'd only recommend something as extensive as (real quality) coilovers, is if you use the car regularly in competition, DEs etc--and are fairly advanced in your skilz... lol Besides: the best quality C/O setups are not listed here. ;) |

Eibach Pro street
Kw Cusco street spec Ground control street system Anything that reuses the stock upper mounts will most likely have the best ride. I'm going GC street they offer everything I want and are 1350 so very fairly priced. Notice a key word in my list?? |
KW V3 is great.

Noteworthy camber plates, matched coils, stupid beefy. Have a peek--> You left out Ground Control? Mine are in a UPS box en route to my front door! HO HO HO |

That setup is a little overkill for your needs but their street or touring systems would be great. 1350 for the street kit is an insane value in my opinion that's why I'm getting it :)
|
Ohlins FTW. As soon as they release them my V3'S will be up for sale. KW makes an awesome coilover though.

BC BR are your best bet if you want the slammed look. They are praised on STi's and WRX's. They do last awhile and are only 1k.
|
I'm very happy with my kw's

The responses in this thread, and every single other one like it on every other forum, are hilarious. Everyone just lists the thing they like.

No really if he wants good ride quality then he should look at spring/shocks. |
How can you have a "best of" coilovers list w/o JRZs!!!
Koni and Bilsteins will be coming with their offerings soon. |

If you want good ride quality don't get cheap coilovers. The good stuff can ride as well as stock even with stiffer linear rate springs. It's all about having a good damper, appropriate spring rates for the tires and use, and enough travel to stay off the bumpstops. Anyway, the short answer is that you should just get the KWs and not slam it. |

No idea about ride quality but for pretty, I like yellow...

I am suggesting that 2.5" drop and "quality ride" are mutually exclusive.
|
Keep in mind all coilovers will need servicing. The words Budget and Coilovers don't work well long term or ride quality.. Also consider where you will have them rebuilt and serviced. Locally? In the USA?
There are a lot of quality brands not on the list. Some that are received very little votes. This is a reflection of the forum experience, not coil over quality. Do yourself a financial favor and buy springs and shocks until you can appreciate and utilize a c/o setup. Peace |
Well, I'm receiving a lot of great feedback and I appreciate everyone's input! I'm looking into lowering springs now, I hear Swift has great springs but they have yet to come out with a final product!

You can easily ruin a good thing by lowering it 2-2.5". It does not need to be that low to handle well and look better (subjective).
A simple .75 - 1" drop is plenty. Slamming it will not create good quality anything except a slammed look. Just my professional opinion, do what makes you happy. |
