Red tail light photoshops

Posted a few of these in the BRZ pic thread, didn't realise that there had been so much activity elsewhere on the forums, it's exploded overnight!

Just done a quick 'shop correcting the rear lights on one of the on-track photos.

looks badass to me. I was feeling pretty negative seeing these shots today but this black one looks great - I think the horrid metallic orange color on all the press shots is really dragging it down.

Here's another, I think spoilerless works better on this car. So far only the black colored car seemed to suit the spoiler.

Looks way better!

fernan2 11-27-2011 05:24 AM

Nice! I want the big spoiler. /:

RRnold 11-27-2011 05:33 AM

I guess a lot of people will be buying Testors transparent candy red paint to paint the inside of their taillights!

Dragonitti 11-27-2011 09:11 AM

I probably get VHT's paint.

suprachica79 11-27-2011 02:26 PM

Does anyone know Toyota's reasoning for the clear-chrometastic tail lights? Because I know I'm not the only one who thinks that the all-red lenses look 100000x better.

Levi 11-27-2011 02:43 PM

If the car were perfect, there would be no need to mod it, but we like modding. Thank you Toyota. LOL

blur 11-27-2011 03:08 PM

Yea, red-out'd tailights and blacked-out headlights. A must for every car nowadays.

:thanks: I'm not sure which I'll do, but I'm leaning towards the smoke.

Mess11 11-27-2011 04:48 PM

Looks awesome! This is gonna be one of the first mods a lot of owners do.

Hawx 11-27-2011 05:06 PM

looks like I'll need to learn how to do that haha

aliphian 11-27-2011 05:15 PM

Can you try a smoked version as well? Leave the stock red alone and smoke all of the stock clear bits. I think that might look ok.

Sato Tatsuya 11-27-2011 06:09 PM

^ I am also curious about the smoked version!

Is this any good? I just went over it with black a few times for a rough smoke. It's a little dark though.

You know, we will probably also have red on the sides of US-spec tails since we require red reflectors (I think). Same as on the front, Euro/JDM specs just need side reflectors, while we need to have amber reflectors.

I think this will be the first time that U.S requirements will actually make the car look better lol

A simple fix for those who don't like the taillights.

WhiteGDB 11-28-2011 11:17 AM

Isn't painting tail lights so mid to late 90's? I thought the new thing was to use layovers. you know simple to put on simple to remove, nicer finish.

Just one example, there are dozens of other companies all of which I'm sure will have options for the GT86/BRZ http://www.lamin-x.com/Articles.asp?ID=267

thanks! it didn't turn out as sharp as I had hoped! hmmmm, I guess maybe the all red will do then? I wanted to keep the turn signal amber, because I hate red turn signal, but meh!!

Thanks buddy! :)

I think the blacked out ones are illegal in CA.

But the red ones look legit.

I think they made clear taillights ugly on purpose. Just think about it, what things can they change to keep interest later on the production run??? I think sexier taillights and bumpers will refresh the car around 2015.:iono:

Since that red is too bright.. some drivers might think your brake lights are either on or off.. or don't know.

Tinted ones are hard to see through when people change lanes. Least it is for me when someone has tinted rear lights.

could i try one?

jedichimp 11-30-2011 03:19 PM

smoked/"blacked-out" looks lame, better "reded" out some but not completely. I'd get some vinyl as opposed to the 90's spraying the inside of the lens. Easier and more durable. We'll see what the US Version comes with, doubt they'll be full Altezza.

Jeris@CatoMoto 11-30-2011 03:29 PM

Ive never been a fan of "altezza" style taillights. Red-out or Blackout tails will be the first thing I address when we pick one up.

Zaku 11-30-2011 03:50 PM

I wonder if the dealers will take matters into their own hands, like when Acura came out the corporate grill alot of dealers took the liberty to paint it themselves.

It's due to a cheapo photoshop. Man Cali has a lot of safety precautions and stuff. You guys have to have the plates up front too?

This one is my favorite so far, just enough darkness but not completely black

definitely doing this. anymore shops?

I'm not sure overlays will be an option with the factory taillights...

If you look at the side view of the stock lights you can see they stick out from the back of the car leaving both the top and side of the assembly exposed. Making that type of compound corner would be impossibly difficult for any vinyl based material.

Worse yet both the top and bottom side areas are joined with near right angle bends. I don't think anyone (even those with tons of experience) will be able to wrap those. Let alone people who are giving it a go for the first time.

It might be possible if you use a 3 piece install and but up the seams, but I doubt that would look good, and it is certainly not something I'll do with my tails.

I'd expect most of us will end up painting the inside or waiting for toybaru/aftermarket sources to offer better alternatives. I'm still hoping we see red tails from the factory, however unlikely it may be.

Lonewolf 01-02-2012 01:55 PM

The altezza tails are the single greatest flaw on the exterior of the FR-S
:slap: (Me > Toyota)

I really hope DEPO or some other good manufacturer comes up with some red out or at least tails with dark bezels...the chrome is killing me.

I don't want to mess with overlays or nightshades (does that ever look good?) either.

Levi 01-02-2012 02:22 PM

Actually, for the taillights it is the outside we'll be painting, not the inside. For the headlights it is the inside in flat black. It is much easier to paint the outside than the inside or put a film and it looks OEM.

It depends on how brave you are to want to open tail lamps

ie: IS300 tails are "closed" after years of people being scared someone took the initiative and opened them, painted/tinted and added custom SMT led lighting. You have to be innovative to make something unique and not like everyone else.

Crashoverride 01-04-2012 01:59 PM

I just want all the chrome in the tails and headlights flat black, keep the lenses clear.

You'll have a problem with the blinker, as flat black won't reflect the orange bulb.
