3D printer ideas for the toyobaru

If you could 3D print something for the BRZ/FRS, what would you print?

I really want to get a 3D printer or use a 3D printing service to really personalize my BRZ with one off pieces, obviously I would sand, prime, paint, whatever to make the piece look good and match the car...

FreshFRS 12-04-2012 07:07 PM

inserts where the FRS blinkers are, sorta match the pattern on the bottom, im installing BRZ headlights asap so it would fill the places nicely and look really clean.

PMok 12-04-2012 07:08 PM

not really FOR the car, but if you could make a 3D hot wheels sized model of the car (doesn't even need to have working wheels), I think that would be pretty cool and I'd buy one if it looked good. Kind of like a paperweight or desktop toy. I still haven't been able to find a diecast model of the BRZ yet...

I got some ideas time to bust out my solidworks and rendering skills lol

I'm currently working on a custom cup holder/iPhone dock. Here is my first test block just to make sure I have the shape correct. It's a perfect fit. Now I just have to decide how I want the dock positioned, and the overall look.

More details! Design pics?

Not much to give for details at this point. It's a direct replacement for the factory cup holder. My test fit piece took about 20 hours to print. I'm probably going to do an angled dock with a cup holder behind it.

I print for RC (remote control) purposes. This should be fun.

It took 20 hours because it's solid, which is completely unnecessary. For stability reasons, something thick is desired but a 1/4" with some ribs would pretty much be the same. It's only for fitment testing right?

It's not solid, it's 10% fill. It would have printed much faster, but I was in no hurry so I had it set on medium layer resolution.

Oh ok.

soros151 12-05-2012 01:14 AM

How about a Dash cover for the bump that says "FR-S" or something like that?

ihaskrayon 12-05-2012 01:29 AM

How long can objects be. I'm a noob when it comes to 3D printing

Mitch 12-05-2012 02:01 AM

I'd make a new "vent" panel design every other week.

Jedi1 12-05-2012 02:42 AM

Where is a decent place to look into home based 3D printing. I get tons of sites when I pull it up in google, but I have zero clue where the reputable information is.

I have the MakerBot Replicator 2. It can print 11"x6"x6". That's about the biggest you currently see in a consumer printer. Larger then that and your probably going to run into warping issues with FDM printers.

MakerBot is great. Their new Replicator 2 is the best turnkey solution I've seen for consumer printers. They also have the Thingiverse community site where people share all their designs

I don't recommend trying going cheap if your thinking of getting a 3D printer unless you have the tome and skill to build your own. And absolutely stay away from the Cubify "Cube" printer if your want to print anything more then little trinkets.

That may be big enough to do a side vent replacement. May be worth giving a shot.

I might be the only one bothered by this, but how about some different buttons/switchgear? The white lettering on black buttons just looks "parts bin" to me. Some of them are backlit and shouldn't be changed but some are not, and I'd love to see them remade with recessed lettering/symbols, like the buttons next to the gauge cluster, the trunk button and the seat heater switches. Not sure how hard it would be to replicate them, but worth a mention I guess?

I think that might be asking a lot for consumer 3D printers. You could make replacement buttons, but I doubt you'd like the end result more then the factory buttons.

Thanks, yeah I saw some of these on eBay but they're $40-60 and for a tiny 1:43! I'm hoping for an AutoArt 1:18 at some point.

mechaghost 12-05-2012 06:57 PM

How about custom emblems to replace the Subaru/Toyota/Scion badges?

Is the makerbot 2.0 good enough to make say like parts of an aero kit, like a fin of some sort?

Custom emblems should be pretty easy for people with an artistic flare. I'm best on the engineering side of things.

You could do a shark fin antenna. Might need some hand finishing. Size limit is 11"x6"x6" so you can't make anything too big. Best for things like small interior parts. After I finish my cup holder/iPhone dock I think I'm going to try a dock for my iPad mini.

ichitaka05 12-05-2012 07:40 PM

Custom 86 piston keyring?

JoeBoxer 12-05-2012 07:54 PM

I would really like some custom emblems.

I'll give it a crack in a week and half after I get my car. :D

I'm at home with a cold today so I've been playing around with CAD a bit.

An 86 logo. I'm sure there are others who already have done this but it's good practice for me.
http://i1152.photobucket.com/albums/...86Rendered.jpg

...and the printed version. Very small just wanted to try printing it.

Not really looking to get into business, but if you tell me the dimensions you want I'll do a test print to see how it comes out.

"I de-baged mine already. And was at the office and wanted to buy Toyota badges....

I am home now and just measured the old scion badges.

Front: 4 and 3/8 inches x 3 inches

Rear: 4 and 1/8 inches x 2 and 6/8 inches

Used a ruler - not 100% accurate, but 99% accurate."

But the 86 being a circle, id say just make them to match the smaller dimensions while retaining the circle shape so.. Just two at 2 and 6/8 should work just fine

ggpaul 12-06-2012 08:48 PM

Shit if I had a 3d printer I'll just make myself a Lamborghini lol.

86 Badge

Okay played around with my design to make it work better as a badge. Changed the taper, and crowned the top.
http://i1152.photobucket.com/albums/...57/86Badge.jpg

Here it is printed at 0.1mm layer resolution. I've cleaned it by giving the top a quick sanding to remove ridges left from the build process.
http://i1152.photobucket.com/albums/...pseeb8f4d6.jpg

This is a 3" diameter. Next to my BRZ badge for a sense of scale

Hmm. I really like that, but the circle peg in an oval hole might not look right. How much for 2?

I agree a circle in an oval spot probably is not going to look great. It might work on an FR-S bumper if it was just the right size since it's badge indent is more open ended. It certainly doesn't work on the BRZ bumper.

Honestly I'm just playing around with this, not looking to get into business. I would probably have to charge more then people are willing to pay to make it worth while.

Just out of curiosity though how much do people think they would be worth for a set? Keeping in mind that they require some finish sanding, and probably some sort of painting (PlastiDip?) which I'm really not getting into.

jshadeck 12-07-2012 04:12 PM

Id be willing to pay 50$ for the set as circles, if you were able to do a perfect matching oval w the round 86 inside of, possible more.

How much more busy does it really need to be? :bellyroll:

Jedi1 12-09-2012 12:00 PM

Turn the busy up to 11. That would be 1 more busy! How durable are these parts? I'f I wanted to use this build custom a-arms, skid plates and other RC related parts, would they hold up or is the material too brittle for that?
