86 at Nordschleife

I saw this in the Tracking/Autocross/HPDE forum. I rarely venture there so I sometimes find things of interest to me.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tilml...ature=youtu.be

things that came to mind on seeing the clip:
1/ The car looks quick enough for me
2/ The driver knew his way around the track and knew what he was doing
2b/ Too much emphasis is placed on a car and not enough on the driver
3/ If the car is not kept on the boil all the time performance falls off.
4/ Awesome
5/ Awesome
6/ Awesome

Careful!! Lol. There are plenty of Clio 200 vids that look faster than that 86 clip.

I could spend the rest of my days doing that sort of stuff without ever getting bored ! Corners flat ! Beautiful.

t0dd 12-03-2012 07:40 AM

That video is from the www.rentracecar.de guys, I would almost bet the guy driving it is Theo who owns and runs the company. I've been there twice and rented Golf MkV GTI's from him both times. He took me for a passenger lap in his TDI Golf (diesel) and he drove like a MANIAC, he knows the track backwards!

Glad he's finally got a Jap car for hire, all his other cars are Euro (not that that's a bad thing!)

Here's the price list, yeah it's expensive but a not to be missed experience if you're anywhere near the track!

Wow, hefty excess penalty if you bingle it !

When I was there it was 8000euro if I binned the GTI, looks like they've put it up. I didn't baby it around the circuit but I was extremely careful around other cars! Saw a few bent cars in 2009, an EvoX from the UK got taken away on a flatbed looked like a write-off. :(

Edit: Just to add, when you drive around the Nordschleife it's your responsibility to pay for any damage to the road/track/surrounds that you do. Most common example is if you hit the armco you have to pay to replace it, and it isn't cheap! So the insurance has to cover that too.

Is booking essential, or you reckon I can just rock up and hire on the day?

Captain Snooze 12-06-2012 06:03 AM

^
I do not know but why take the risk of turning up and not having the car you want? I would book just to be sure.

Palmy 12-06-2012 03:20 PM

Coz Im not sure exactly when I'll be there, doing a whirlwind tour.

Book in advance and get confirmation, don't just assume you can turn up and drive. Even just calling them a couple of days before you go is better than turning up on the day and praying!

I learnt the hard way at another car rental place at the ring who shall remain nameless. 12hrs round trip drive to find out that the car I had rented was at Spa :(

Also check the track calendar, you can't just rock up and drive on any day at any time.

TonyJZX 12-08-2012 02:56 AM

what time did it do?

seemed to get to 8.45 and it still hadnt reached the gantry

Captain Snooze 12-08-2012 03:28 AM

According to fastestlaps.com the 86 did it in 9.09 , damp ( although don't know how damp). I don't know if the the lap listed at fastestlaps.com refers to the above youtube clip.

You can't run flying laps at the Ring on the public days. You must pull off at the parking lot which is located midway up the straight.

Bit of a safety thing as it stops people merging into cars travelling 200km/h or more faster then they are.

That restriction is why you'll sometimes see times listed as "Bridge to Gantry"

Surok 12-09-2012 05:04 PM

Either way, 9:09 or even the magazines prediction of 8:50 on a better tyre like a potenza s001, is not amazingly fast. But this car isn't designed to be fast. It's designed to be fun!

fibrewizard 12-09-2012 07:49 PM

and a hot lap like this would be soooooo much fun

You need big horsepower to get really fast times at the ring, it's such an insanely quick track. There are so many long relatively straight sections, sweeping corners, and something you can't tell from driving it on Forza/GranTurismo is that it's really hilly! It climbs about 300m vertical over the length of the track, you need HP to get up a long sloping hill @ 200km/h+! Keep in mind to do an 8min lap you're doing an AVERAGE speed of around 155km/h...
