Official Production Subaru BRZ Photos Revealed?!

2 Attachment(s)
Not sure if this has been posted, but this is my first time seeing a full image of the production BRZ without camouflage.

I really like the look of it!

Also from homepage:

Are we looking at the official production Subaru BRZ in these latest photos ?? The photos are from the January 2012 issue of Road & Track in which they claim these are the official photos of the Subaru BRZ sports coupe.

It certainly looks to be consistent and accurate with the official Subaru BRZ teaser images released by Subaru three weeks ago. If these are indeed official photos, the Subaru BRZ seems to share much more styling with the revealed Scion FR-S / Toyota FT-86 than with the recently debuted Subaru BRZ STI Concept.

This also looks to be a U.S. version of the BRZ, judging by the amber reflectors, the lack of headlight washers, and the reverse lights without the red triangle reflector. In any case, we’ll know soon if this is indeed the BRZ production model as we’ll be bringing you live coverage from the Tokyo Motor Show next week at its reveal!

I really like the lines. It has better tail lights, and foglights than the frs. Is this the latest road and track?

But struggles uphills? Man this thing will need more power.

phenoyz 11-26-2011 12:07 PM

nice.

But struggles uphills? Man this thing will need more power. YES---> it does (turbo)

Ryephile 11-26-2011 12:18 PM

Road & Track gets it wrong again. 56.1" height, are you kidding?!

I hope their "picture" is simply the leaked BRZ front end chopped onto an FR-S, as the wheels , rear bumper "diffuser", and taillights are identical.

Edit: the tails are the same shape, it appears they simply have more red. Boooo for lack of differentiation.

spin9k 11-26-2011 12:21 PM

Looks good but...

strug·gle (strgl)

v. strug·gled, strug·gling, strug·gles
v.intr.

1. To exert muscular energy, as against a material force or mass: struggled with the heavy weight.
2. To make a strenuous effort; strive: as in struggled to accelerate.
3. To progress with difficulty: struggled through the hills.

Zaku 11-26-2011 12:33 PM

Are these confirmed actual BRZ or a R&T chop?

It doesn't say, but the front bumper does look identical to the one shown on subaru's official website so safe to say it should be legitimate.

On another note, the blackened headlights, orange corner indicator and rear tail light looks a little different from the leak. Wonder if this is the North American version??

I'm very excited. I prefer Subaru's bumper than the Toyota. :)

MrVito 11-26-2011 12:50 PM

can someone attach the photos directly to the thread, can't view the source from my work computer! :mad0259:

madfast 11-26-2011 12:55 PM

it is 100% the US version. the amber reflectors, the lack of headlight washers, the reverse lights without the red triangle reflector, etc...

Zaku 11-26-2011 01:00 PM

I noticed that the article speaks of a snow setting. How well do you think a car like the BRZ will do in the snow? I'm not expecting a WRX level where it can pull a big truck out of the snow, but the idea of a RWD car with snow mode isn't computing in my head, could someone enlighten me please?

I remember reading an article which Subaru tested the BRZ/FRS to approximately 45mph in the snow during PV stage with "good stability". Perhaps the ECU snow setting dampens the ECU response for easier control? A well balance RWD car can perform very well in snow, just not the very deep snow.

KaliKev 11-26-2011 01:33 PM

This is out in a magazine?

That's exactly what I thought! 1-2in off I get, but 5-6?! And I agree. The wheels make me think it's just a chop, why would both companies use the exact same wheels?

Longhorn248 11-26-2011 01:41 PM

Interesting paint on the side mirrors, I'm guessing it's a chop and not from Toyota/Subaru.

Snoopyalien24 11-26-2011 02:16 PM

This is a chop, u can see the lights reflected on the headlights. Chopped from concept BRZ. No way this is going to be 56 inches high, that's the height of the accord coupe :/

dalli 11-26-2011 02:28 PM

he is talking about the prototype he drove a couple of months ago

come on guys, stay with me...

KaliKev 11-26-2011 02:31 PM

It's not real. If it is, it's a slap in the face from Subaru and Toyota IMO

Drewsifer3X 11-26-2011 03:05 PM

I hope that is the production model.
No stupid fixed side window in front of the door window!

A-Spike 11-26-2011 03:11 PM

Seriously, how much damn money would've cost Subaru to put those damn tail lights on the production car?

That side window is still there...this car is exactly like the leaked ft86 but with a different front bumper...

Even the LFA has a fixed side window...

Giccin 11-26-2011 03:15 PM

I'd struggle on a hill too.. if it was crazy steep.. lol

tripjammer 11-26-2011 03:20 PM

Looks like the rear diffuser made it to production...I remember somebody saying it was gonna get cut.

Lol!

I would stop and help you up the hill...

Deslock 11-26-2011 03:23 PM

Jah1mon, phenoyz, spin9k, and Giccin: Is this is the quote you're referring to?
Quote:

The power from the boxer engine felt adequate, but the car strained a bit up hills.
I don't equate "strained a bit" to struggling. And color me unconcerned. Even though it's a somewhat light car, with this engine output it will not accelerate impressively speeding up a hill without downshifting. Remember, roadandtrack's core audience is lazy Americans that just want to mash the pedal at 3000 RPM. To anyone who happens to be in that demographic, I mean no offense, but this car isn't for you.

It's all about expectations: I remember watching a Best Motoring battle in which they commented on how a 350 hp RX7 couldn't keep up with 550 hp R34 up hill. Didn't make me think I need 550 hp in a daily driver.

Anyway, thanks for posting the photos SonnyBRZ.

The BRZ concept's tail looks better (sans the silly wing). Interesting that this back-end has identical body-work as the Toyota (the only difference seems to be the light assembly). My first thought was "photochop?", but I don't remember seeing any photos at exactly that angle.

I also don't recall seeing anything previously about three drive settings (Normal, Sport, and Snow).

In addition to getting the height wrong, what they wrote about peak power RPM doesn't add up:
Quote:

"The BRZ is powered by a naturally aspirated and direct-injected 2.0-liter flat-4 engine with 200 bhp and 151 lb.-ft. of torque"

{snip}

"And although power peaked at around 6500 RPM, the redline is set to a lofty 7400."
At 6500 RPM:
162 lbf*ft ~ 200 hp
159 lbf*ft ~ 197 hp

At 151 lbf*ft:
200 hp ~ 6950 RPM
197 hp ~ 6850 RPM

(both power levels listed as it's unclear which we're getting)

To be fair to roadandtrack, that's not *that* far from 6500 which was obviously just an impression from their drive of the pre-production model, but I would've expected them to notice the contradiction in their article.

If this car came with turbo 300hp, it would sell at least twice as much. It's going to feel more like a Mini from power point of view. And due to the agreement between Subaru & Toyota, BRZ cannot have more power than FRS.

Turbo 300hp + awd not going to happen because this car it suppose to be light weight, rwd, affordable and fun to drive like the AE86. On the other note I really hope they come with the STi version with the CF roof, with better suspension (Aluminum control arms with spherical bushing), with more aggressive aero, and those 18" STi wheels.

Revenant 11-26-2011 03:34 PM

The thing I hate about the Toyota version is the lame previous gen Elantra taillights. I saw hope in the Subaru's tail. I hope this is just a chop, because this backend is the same lame Toyota back end. It's honestly a deal breaker for me.

MrVito 11-26-2011 03:36 PM

Z_Rocks: With a projected first year production of only 3000 units, I don't see them not selling every last one as is. I do expect to see a more powerful version in a year or two though.

Brody8877: Z_Rocks never said anything about awd.

WingsofWar 11-26-2011 03:38 PM

upon inspection of my part of the article, looks like photoshop/image render..rather than an actual photo

Where did I say "AWD"?

Good to hear this from a pro, I sincerely hope the BRZ looks better than this...

3000? Will be gone in the first 3 months, no doubt. It will still sell very well.

What I was basically saying, was that, whatever that car sells with 200hp, it will sell double if it had a turbo and 300HP.
Right now I'm 50% sold. That same car with Turbo, I'd buy it 100%.

n2oinferno 11-26-2011 03:47 PM

I wonder if the height has anything to do with cars being jacked up an extra inch or so in NA compared to the rest of the world.

KevinDuMa 11-26-2011 03:49 PM

It's just a photo shopped version of the Toyota in the brochure...same stance and everything

rL-gT 11-26-2011 03:54 PM

Yep. Photoshop for sure.

No way they would THAT identical...

Mino 11-26-2011 03:54 PM

Guys whoever's worried about the power don't, there is always the beautiful aftermarket :)

Snoopyalien24 11-26-2011 03:56 PM

The thing I like about this photoshop, is the fact that the person who did it, made it white :D

Navi 11-26-2011 04:00 PM

Why does it say 2013 here? I noticed this before on some FR-S info it said 2013.

Wasn't this supposed to be released in 2012?

Zaku 11-26-2011 04:01 PM

I can't wait to see the real things side by side, then you'll be able to tell the Photoshop definitely. Both cars look good Photoshop in white.

Yeah now that I look again I see it.... Looks like a better tint job hides it better.
I know that design cuts wind noise and whatever... But I still hate it. :p
