damn thats a good idea
wish you can post a vids

Actually seems pretty pricey for 0-1hp.

The sound has likely improved, but I feel like you could have saved a bit more and gotten an intake for that price.

I can however see this being a good mod if you already have a header back exhaust.

brichard0625 12-01-2012 12:46 PM

284 bucks doesnt seem that bad for a muffler delete. Would like to see the finish product with the tips on. Is that loud tho that u need someothing to adjust volume? Im only asking because im looking into a muffle delete since they are inexpensive and have decent hp gain. any chance of a video to hear how it sounds?

i have the Berk dual tipped delete and it's not obnoxiously loud. i really like it. i like the sound better than any other aftermarket catbacks and the gains are even supposed to be better than most of them as well. idk if the group buy is still open but got mine for $299 shipped. i'd definitely recommend it

Ch3cho86 12-02-2012 02:01 AM

In other words Superhatch, you're saying that everyone that want an exhaust is wasting hhis money and is better an air filter?? I'm looking for an exhaust where I can gain a minimal HP, gain a pretty exhaust sound with the option to silence it near like stock when i dont want to hear the loud exhaust. I think this is the best option and remember that my muffler delete has a Exhuast control valve that cost $120. So the regular price of a muffler delete is about $160 without ECV

Tomorow I will post some videos
But for now:

I was trying to sat that the muffler delete shows almost no gains in hp in any of the tests I've seen, and paying nearly 300 for sound seems a bit of a waste to me. The tips aren't likely to change the sound to something deeper since they are just run over the smaller pipe, so you paid for all show no go when there are options out there for not too much more that could give you show and go.

Also, if you deleted your muffler, whats the dB difference between a single and dual muffler delete? (which is in essence what you'r doing with the Apex'i part)

Cliffs: Save a little more and buy an exhaust.

In the dsport mag, the muffler deletes were the best performance-wise...albeit the loudest. I think paying just 300 for a muffler delete is better than 1000 for a catback. It all depends on future mods though. A header back exhaust with a delete will be annoyingly loud. That's why I chose a catback.

And as for an intake being better, they haven't shown much of a gain for 300+ as well. Without a tune, I'd avoid the intake...my opinion.

JDMenrique 12-02-2012 11:13 AM

if im not mistaken the muffle deletes were actually showing the highest gains...

I'm not saying that tips change the exhaust sound. For me there not cheap option since I live in PR the shipping and handling is a lot higher than the States, so a simple axleback muffler that the cheapest one is $500 to $600 + the S&H over $280, near $800 for a axle back.
And like always this is just an Option, if is affordable to pay for a Branded Exhaust Go for it, if not go for a custom one. Here in the island the FR-S base price is $29,995 and the payment is a high compared with the states price so an exhaust that cost more than the payment, for me is not an option

sw20kosh 12-02-2012 01:55 PM

A muffler delete has headache inducing, ear destroying resonance/droning in the 2-3000 rpm range. This is further exacerbated by taking out the spare/jack/tools.

It really sounds terrible. It is however what I use at the track for HPDE as the weight savings and potentially top end hp gains are desired. Stock muffler goes right back on when I get home from the track.

Razz 12-02-2012 02:10 PM

It looks rice with the small tube inside the large tip.

Uhhhhhh...why not do an electric exhaust cut out? Then you don't have a goofy fucking valve that has a cable plumbed into the car. You could of even slapped the tips on your stock exhaust. But this is FT86 club and everyone is trying to be different I guess.

Ch3cho86 12-04-2012 05:31 AM

Electric exhaust cutout are not reliable, I saw in many forums that most of exhaust cutout motor just works for about 9 to 12 month then they need to buy a replacement valve motor. I came from 9 years driving my rav4 and about 6 years ago I installed a Volvo throttle body attached into the exhaust and it worked great after all those 6 years

I disagree, at least with my Berk dual delete, I experience no in-cabin drone at all unless I lift completely off the gas pedal above 4k rpms, even then it's not bad. Part throttle driving and highway cruising it's quiet no matter what engine speed. It's only loud when it's idling cold or at WOT and after it has warmed up it idles quiet with just a little bit of extra rumble over stock. I've left mine on with no real desire to swap the stock suitcase back on after track events.

I think some people just have sensitive ears. In that case I think the WORK dual delete with resonator would be a better choice.

Ch3cho86 12-04-2012 08:42 PM

You're right Alt_brz. In highway its quiet near as stock. This weekend I'm going to the muffler shop to get the Cat out ( test pipe) . Before installing the test pipe I will take a video before and after the test pipe

Ch3cho86 12-08-2012 02:31 PM

Today I went to the muffler shop and got installed a custom Test Pipe

I daily drive mine with a muffler delete and it's honestly been fine for me. The only drone-y spot I notice is right at about 2400-2500. I just shift, or go a little faster/slower. It's a little loud at highway speeds, but I got used to it quickly and passengers haven't complained yet. I guess there's variances in every car/motor though that might make it more tolerable in mine than it is in yours.

No reason to even pay that much - I got my single-exit delete with the stock tip done at a local muffler shop for $50. Took about twenty minutes, had it done on my lunch break hahahaha.

AMEN! Lol

BTW Test Pipe cost $65

White64Goat 12-08-2012 08:46 PM

I've got to ask since no one else has.....what is the exhaust cut-out valve for? (Or is it not a cut-out valve?) If you have a muffler delete, what function is it performing? Since it is after the flange where the stock exhaust bolts on, it seems to me that it would serve no function installed in the muffler delete pipe. If it was before the flange, then it would dump before the stock muffler (when you have the stock muffler on). Am I missing something here?

I thought it was to control exhaust db on the fly

Ch3cho86 12-08-2012 11:24 PM

Thats right, just to control exhaust db on the fly (perfect to prevent tickets from the cops!). The Apexi ECV is not a Exhaust Cutout

sw20kosh 12-11-2012 02:08 PM

Curious: How reliable is this Apexi EVC? The exhaust cut-outs are notorious for not lasting long due to all the heat and soot they experience.

Ch3cho86 12-13-2012 05:39 AM

Is to early to give a review about the reliability since I got it installed about a month ago.

Ch3cho86 12-13-2012 05:40 AM

I'm hoping to get the video by this weekend. I recorded it with the cellphone but the audio quality is not the best.

Ch3cho86 12-15-2012 09:28 PM

Finally!!! Here is the video. The sound is horrible since was taken with a cell phone and I think that the sound waves (Hz) are to high and it make that the camera record that horrible sound, like in a Rock concert and you're close to the stage and everything that you recorded sound distorted. In the video you can hear when the Apexi valve is closed and opened. In the second video you notice the difference of the ECV since de cell phone cam do not distorted the sound as much as the 1st video
Next week I'm going to use a real camera to take the videos

Anyone have a picture of the internals on this valve? Damn that things loud!

White64Goat 12-17-2012 11:39 AM

So it is basically an exhaust cutout valve (header dump) and I've got to imagine that when it's in the closed position the car is going to run like crap since there is nowhere for the exhaust to go since you've installed it as an inline valve and not as a dump.

I'm assuming the valve rotates 90 degrees when closed and also assuming that the butterfly makes contact with the inside of the pipe when closed?

This is a regular cutout, and basically you have the valve with no dump pipe attached http://www.ft86club.com/forums/data:...BgDAGAMB//2Q==

Ch3cho86 12-17-2012 08:26 PM

The valve, when closed it leave the edge of the butterfly never touch the pipe. So if you close it at 100% you can still runn on lower RPM or by just pressing a bit the pedal and it wont hurt the engine. Thats why I said that this is perfect to prevents been stopped by cops! Just use the valve when youre close to them, then open it a accelerate

White64Goat 12-17-2012 09:07 PM

Ok
