Nissan Reviving 240sx?

Taken from insideline
Quote:

With all media buzz surrounding Toyota's FT-86 and Honda's CR-Z lately, Nissan, which considers itself the preeminent Japanese sports-car maker, is planning to strike back with an all-new version of the 240SX. After getting the proverbial axe in 2002, the 240SX (we call it the Silvia here) will feature styling and packaging loosely based on the Foria concept car that was shown at the 2005 Tokyo Motor Show.
The next 240SX will be built on a shortened version of Nissan's FR-L platform, the same used for the 370Z and G sedan, meaning that the power will be transferred to the rear wheels.
The resurrected 240SX front-engine/rear-drive 2+2 coupe, will retain its predecessor's image (the S15) as Nissan's entry-level performance car. The engine is expected to come in the form of a 1.8-liter turbocharged inline-4 with about 200 horsepower. There also may be a naturally-aspirated powerplant added to the mix, one that will cater to the bargain hunters.

There will be plenty of options offered including a flamboyant body kit. We hear that the car will tip the scales around 2800 lb., so expect 0-60-mph times in the six to seven-second range.

That the new 240SX will be a popular tuner car is a given, so don't be surprised to see 300- to 400-horsepower conversions (or more) soon after the car is introduced in 2011 or 2012. As for price, we haven't heard much, but expect it to be right on top of those of the FT-86 and next-generation Mazda MX-5.-- Mak Tokuyama, reporting from Japan.

This is so exciting

Sounds like the good ole days of the early 90's haha Lets just see if this plays out...Im hoping the toyota wil be less then that weight though

MtnDrvr86 12-11-2009 02:10 PM

Its seems, the more I look, that this has been rumored for a few years now. Here are 2 blog posts that date Nov 2007

http://www.autoblog.com/2007/11/26/r...omeback-trail/

http://www.rocketpunchautoblog.com/2...uy-nissan.html

so Im not holding my breath on this one.

Competition improves the breed. Bring it on.

p.s. The Foria was a fairly ugly concept.

This time around the FT-86 is probably pushing Nissan to release something to compete with it. I am not surprised to hear that the 240 may come back.

UGLY!

They were saying the FT was on-again off-again, this thing has been much worse. Right after the S15 production ended some rumors were thrown around. Then, right around the same time as the FT was announced, they sounded pretty serious. Now again..
Like you guys are saying, competition is great for us, but I'm not holding my breath either.

YourFearlessLeader 12-11-2009 03:43 PM

1.8L? I think they can do better than that. At least put a 2.0L in there.

Either way, this car is going to put up a strong fight against the 86.

1.8 with 200hp? Sounds like a lightly modded CA18DET.

I hope they do make an official announcement on a new Silvia line. Not only would be awesome just to have the car around again, it puts pressure on Toyota to keep the FT-86 in the right state-of-mind, particularly in the weight department.

Siriusly.Andrew 12-11-2009 04:00 PM

its a 1.8 Turbo, whats wrong with that?

scape 12-11-2009 04:29 PM

cool, but i doubt it will hold a candle to the ft's low center of gravity engine-placement

ya I think the ft-86 will have the upper hand cuz of that. Like a s/c or t/c could up the hp if needed. I am still leaning towards the ft-86 cuz it just looks amazing. I wonder how the 240 will look like though.

4agze 12-11-2009 04:41 PM

they've been saying this for years like the revival of the AE86 & supra until i hear it thru the mouth of a nissan CEO or any one in charge i wont hold my breath

well you have the ae86 lol. I think you meant to say 240 right

scape 12-11-2009 04:51 PM

i highly assume they will revive the 240 type of car, when & what platform would it REALLY ride upon would be questions to be answered. i doubt it'd come turbo'd tho.

>_> I think I will stick with the ft-86. I do kinda like the front thought but the rear is is too plain.

Gost 12-12-2009 12:37 PM

it's too bad they wouldn't recreate the body style of the S15.

MtnDrvr86 12-12-2009 02:30 PM

I thought it kinda looked like a mix of tiburon and the subaru version of the ft86

Looking at it closer, I agree with you.

Matador 12-12-2009 03:20 PM

It's gonna be interesting to see them make a 2+2 on the L (?) platform that's gonna be lighter than the 370Z.

ROFLMAO

Yeah, the 2 seater 370Z is what like 3300lbs. How are they going to drop 500lbs from the FM platform to get this 2+2 Silvia in at the reported 2800lbs? 200hp 1.8l turbo at that weight would be a decent performer though.

That Fioria concept from 2005 is hideous. They should just bring back an updated S15 body with the new 1.8l turbo engine and call it good.

Whatever they do it will help keep Toyobau focussed on making the FT-86/216a the best performing cheap RWD coupe on the market so I'm all for the competition.

4agze 12-12-2009 04:16 PM

Same as before like the 240sx will have the 1.8liter Or any downgraded motor and the rest of the world will get a better engine

Rotarydisciple 12-14-2009 09:55 PM

If Nissan decides to bring the 240sx back out I wouldn't even consider buying it. Knowing them it'll be too heavy or lack the handling of a true sports car.

I thought the only thing lacking for 240sx (in North American at least) was that they got the KA24 instead of the SR20. Other than that isn't the chassis a good one.

Nissan Silvia/200SX coming back?

http://www.caradvice.com.au/167003/n...ke-a-comeback/

Found this article interesting as the idea of competitors popping up to take on the FRS/GT-86/BRZ has always been in the back of the mind when this car was announced. Thought I'd share!

RRnold 04-05-2012 07:00 PM

I really hope so as well as Honda! Imagine if Honda made a RWD coupe, it would be over!

Would be nice to have a Silvia with the Juke turbo engine in it.

Its funny because we both started the rumors of it having a Juke engine :D

Kimsey47 04-05-2012 07:21 PM

Hopefully we do see the other Japanese players get a fire under their @$$es as I too would like to relive the 90's glory days! Even though I wasn't driving until 1996-7 as a high school/college student I LOVED the amount of fun Japanese used cars available to me. Now since I'm older and can afford to have some fun with cars I'd love to see what the others could come out with. Honda in particular needs something to turn them around. I was HOOKED after my Integra and they just started making uninteresting cars. I think the last car to come out by them that I actually liked was the first TSX. Anyways, the FRS/GT86/BRZ is a great start. Looking forward to getting mine to have the driving pleasure I had in high school/college!

 Makes logical sense based on already having the engine ready (might need to tune a little).

Kimsey47 04-05-2012 07:32 PM

In regards to Honda or Mazda any ideas of what they could do? I personally wish Honda would make the CRZ what it should have been all along, and then bring back/modernize the Integra, S2000 and get rid of that monstrosity we call a Civic these days... As for Mazda? PLEASE BRING BACK THE RX-7! The final gen is still a beautiful car, as was the Toyota Supra. Hard to think how old those both are and they're still lookers and modern in appearence.

Levi 04-05-2012 07:59 PM

It would really be nice if after the GT86 we'll see a new Silvia, a new S2000 coupé and a new RX-7.

Same glory days for me too! Got my Integra in '97 and to me, I loved Hondas b/c they were the little engines that could.

**not that I condone street racing but a turbo'd F series can do some serious damage.**

GenkiElite 04-05-2012 08:37 PM

It doesn't need to be re-imagined. Just give me the S15 Silvia R and I'll be good to go.

Kimsey47 04-05-2012 09:20 PM

LOL, true... Just re-release the originals with some tweaks to the engines!

I was the same as you RRnold, had a 94 Integra LS non-vtech. Wasn't a fast car by any means but it was a blast to drive. Just put some larger wheels and some coilovers on that guy and boy would it hug a curve!

What kind of RWD Honda? They're making a new NSX. Or do you mean like a new S2000? Or maybe something different?

Let's not forget that the S2000 was pretty expensive for a little NA I4 car. And the NSX was completely out of most people's league.

The 86/FR-S/BRZ (gosh I hate doing that every time I refer to this car) is pretty much everything I would want from a rear wheel drive car. Boxer engine, reliable design, decent fuel economy, decent power, decent cargo space, 4 seats, not too wide/long but not too small, modern technologies and convenience features, etc, for a fairly low price.

IMO, Mazda has the most room to compete in the affordable sports car market with a new SkyActiv MX-5 Miata and a new Rotary RX-9. And Toyota could bring out a new MR-S. But I feel like a RWD Inline 4 Nissan or Honda wouldn't be unique enough to get people's interest/money these days. But who knows... maybe they could have some new hybrid design. Anyway, I'm always hoping for more sports cars.
