Turbo Whistle v. Blower Whine

Well, with the multitude of TC and SC kits coming out, I thought now would be a good time to survey the forums and see which forced aspiration SOUND you like better! Be completely objective about this one and forget about every other aspect of each FI system, and focus on sound. What do you like better, a clean and smooth turbo whistle and BOV sound, or a nice, smooth blower whine?

I can't stand turbo whistle for more than 5 minutes, it sounds cool but gives me a headache after a while. But a supercharger whine? I could listen to that all day long.

What do you guys prefer?

nonicname 11-14-2012 01:20 PM

you only get a whine out of a twin-screw style SC so this poll isn't accurate.

Not true, centrifugal and Roots-type both have noticeable whine, although a twin-screw is definitely louder. The Stillen 370Z is centrifugally blown and still produces noticeable whine.

Thus, your argument is moot. :)

i believe that stillen does Roots style superchargers and centrifugals, my buddy has a stillen kit and its definitely positive displacement. needs a hood scoop even. and roots and twin screws produce a whine the same as a centrifugal. prochargers are the loudest that i've heard however. :burnrubber:

I hate whiners.....so it goes to say that I hate supercharger whine. I'd much rather listen to the sweet sound of a turbocharger spooling. I don't really need to hear the blow-off valve though. That can get tiring rather quickly. Thankfully, not all BOFs are obnoxious as the typical cough/fart/sneeze ones that the ricers love to install.

SubarooMike 11-14-2012 02:00 PM

There should be an option for both!

Sounds Amazing:

A centrifugal blower doesn't make anything like the whiney sound you get from a twin-screw blower. I'm not saying it's silent, I'm just saying it's a completely different sound. I don't find a centrifugal blower offensive at all. I can't stand the constant crappy whine you get from your basic Kenny Bell twin-screws though.

SnapOv3st3r 11-14-2012 02:44 PM

Love the sound of a Dual BB turbo. S/C sounds like the belt is about to break.

_F-R-S_ 11-14-2012 02:52 PM

Hmm were not talking about my wife right?

NoFear99 11-14-2012 03:51 PM

I had twin turbo in my RX-7.

I have a supercharge in my Exige S.

Now I want a turbo in my FR-S.

I love both but because I have to make a choice here for the poll, I will take the turbo over the supercharge.

Supercharge sounds like if a bird or a child was crying and turbo sounds like everything is going to explode soon or later hahaha.

Take this with a grain of salt.

roddy 11-14-2012 09:44 PM

I prefer the sound of a positive displacement blower... Roots style in particular. The twin screws are more efficient, but on pure sound, roots. Hands down. I find centrifugal superchargers have more of a whistle than a whine.

This centri sounds mean though:

Turbos sound good too. I've had some wheel time in my buddy's '87 turbo Regal, and love to listen to it spool up.

Back in the day, they used to have Buick/Grand National night at Englishtown's Raceway Park. Quite possibly the coolest sound ever was listening to two Grand Nats spooling up as they loaded the engine to launch the cars.

Coheed 11-14-2012 11:04 PM

Roddy, that video changed my life. EPIC. I enjoyed it a lot :)
I prefer turbo. Anyone that heard my GT3076r spooling said it was the best sounding turbo!

koyv90 11-15-2012 01:10 AM

i hate the supercharger sounds. Its usually really loud and annoying.

I prefer turbos with low pitched, whooshing spool (vs the high-pitched, whiny turbos). There's also the added benefit of being able to reduce the sound with throttle control, which you can't do with unclutched superchargers.
Though I prefer, above all, the sound of silence when an FR-S is sitting in the dealership waiting for an ECU.

Low pitch turbos sound like a frying pan in the engine bay. Just saying. Listen to Dynosty's turbo if you want proof.

rice_classic 11-16-2012 04:15 AM

I've always associated and I'll admit, unfairly so, the sound of Supercharge to be very masculine, beefy. I think it stems from seeing them on muscle cars. Always liked it. I like turbo cars as well but the blow-off valve sound, especially the sequential blow off valves make me instantly think of rice-boi-fast&furious-tunervision folks.

Now that's just an opinion on what comes to mind when I hear the sound. That is not my opinion on turbo and superchargers themselves or the folks who run them.

Danzzt231 11-16-2012 08:00 AM

Roots s/c whines for me.

JDMenrique 11-16-2012 08:19 AM

my last car was turbo charged and i remember it like it was yesterday the first time i drove it after the install. the first time you hear the BOV from inside the car its like an out of body experience, lol.

nix 11-16-2012 08:53 AM

Neither. No vented BOVs or WGs either.

1ConfuzedBastard! 11-16-2012 10:55 AM

I used to have the best of both worlds. My Cobalt SS Supercharged and my turbo Integra. As much as I love the sound of my Integra still, I really miss the Eaton blower whine as well as the twinscrew whine when I had that on there as well.

How could you not love this scream on my old car?

Turbowned 11-16-2012 10:59 AM

I prefer the sound of a turbo spooling (especially if there's a nice external wastegate plumbed back into the exhaust) but I prefer the linear feel of a supercharger.

dori. 11-16-2012 05:10 PM

I like the sound of the turbo spool, the BOV...

Danzzt231 11-16-2012 10:47 PM

I would love to have a twincharger setup. Like my VW Golf MK6 TSi 160.

It made all sorts of the right noises we car enthusiasts likes.

0-3000rpm = supercharger whines
4000rpm - 6000rpm = turbo whoosh
6000rpm to redline = engine growl

Throughout the rev range the exhaust noise just keeps building up and roars, and of course the sound of bypass valve and intake noise comes to play.

The transition of the supercharger to turbo is just seamless and the noises it made is just epic.

Straight cut gear drive on a centri probably makes it pretty whiney. I freaking love whine, it's like you have a mini F1 engine.

hamlet 11-21-2012 08:27 PM

I've owned a twin turbo rx7, an aftermarket turboed civic, a mazdaspeed 3 w an hks ssbov, and an s2000 w a tuned vortech centrifugal

My favorite sound remains the hks bov. I would rev and shift just to hear it. Only car sound i've ever experienced that I actually MISS:(

Shagaliscious 11-21-2012 08:50 PM

I chose the supercharger whine, I love that sound.

Celica00 11-21-2012 08:56 PM

its a toss up for me. they both have qualities that make me climax. just the sound of a noticeably good performing engine is good enough for me.
