340 miles and one full tank later...

3 Attachment(s)
I picked up my white, manual tranny FRS Wednesday night with 10 miles and a full tank of gas. I traded in my 2010 Gti with close to 50k miles to carmax for $17k(scion offered me $15,800). My Gti (loved the car) had heated seats (love it), ambient lighting, a great gauge cluster computer which displayed temp/avg mpg/speed/bearings/etc, and a usable trunk lol. I love sports cars but I do wish more came in hatch back form, it's extremely convenient and looks awesome!

My first impressions on the FRS was "I wish I had heated seats and this came in hatchback form" lol (I know the brz limited has heated seats but I'm not willing to pay $30k+ OTD, $27.5k OTD felt high enough for the car. As I'm driving the car I am enjoying it more and more. The head unit which looked awful and old now feels practical and well thought out. The seats were pretty aggressive, but after adjusting it and finding the perfect seat position, quite well designed to hold me in and not fall out. The shifter, I thought the sticking was annoying in my test drive, but bc the shifter is torso height, the stitching place, want makes sense. The list can go on and on, and I'm sure you can add to the list lol

340 miles, and one full tank fill up later, enjoying the car more and more every day...

Background on my vehicle history:
1997 Nissan pathfinder(hand me down from mom)
2006 toyota camry (dad traded my pathfinder for this car)
(Ditched cars for motorcycles)
2008 Kawasaki ninja 250
2005 Kawasaki ninja 636
2000 Honda s2000 6 sipped manual(obviously lol)
2010 vw Gti 6 speed manual
Current: scion FRS 6speed manual

Congrats on the purchase but was that oversized picture necessary?

I had that same thought. It is easy to get spoiled by heated seats.

But they can always be added if you so desire.

Congrats on the purchase!

I'm thinking about purchasing someone's BRZ cloth seats and swapping the seats instead. The cloth material on the frs seats stink.

Congrats man! I've got a mk6 GTI and FR-S. I like them both, but to be honest, I barely drive the GTI anymore ;)

SUB-FT86 11-13-2012 09:09 AM

Does it get really cold in Cali? I hated heated seats in Georgia in my old RL.

ApoNono 11-13-2012 09:37 AM

Congrats man! Enjoy the new ride!

Heated seats are over rated!

just_drive 11-13-2012 10:58 AM

Congrats on the purchase.

I'm very interested in hearing more about how you like the car compared to the GTI. Was your GTI stock? I ask because I'm in a MKV GTI right now. How does the acceleration compare to the GTI? The FRS is lighter with the same horsepower but definitely down on torque.

I like my heated seats. When you have back issues as I do and many others it feels great to put some heat on your back. Certainly not over rated.

I have a 2006 GTI/DSG along with my BRZ. The GTI is a torque monster and pulls without effort as you know from low revs.

The BRZ/FR-S needs to be worked a bit to get speed. It does not pull as hard as the GTI. There is much more sturm und drang driving the BRZ/FR-S compared to the GTI.

That being said the BRZ is a blast to drive and just feels great in the corners.

Thanks for the input. Just by looking at the dyno you can certainly tell the BRZ would be lacking the low end power I've come to love out of this 2.0T engine. Certainly power isn't everything, but low end torque for a daily is a huge selling point.

I take it back then ... over rated was just my opinion but in your situation I can see it being a nice to have feature in any car.

Congrats on the New Car!

When you sit in heated leather seats for the first time and its 30*F out with extreme wind, the distance from the driveway to the front door seems like a mile. First time I sat in heated seats in the winter, I sat in my car for 30 minutes in the driveway until the wife called me to ask what I was doing in the car all this time.

jesperswe 11-13-2012 03:19 PM

Never had a car with heated seats before untill now when i bought my GT86, now i use them everyday :D

Cheddar 11-13-2012 03:41 PM

Congratz! I also miss the heated seats from my MKVI GTi lol but ill never get used to the sitting postion and shifter feel in the GTi after owning this car.

IloveBaldEagles 11-13-2012 08:29 PM

I miss my natural heated seats where the sun beamed onto thy mighty borolla and baked thy interior so i can haveth a warmth and crispy drive. For the first five minutes at least.

I'm at 500 miles and I have another 500 miles before I can full comment on this question. I love the GTI's power band, and it was almost fully stock. I had lightweight enkei wheels with Dunlop Star Specs(great but LOUD tires) and I kept track brake pads on for my daily driving. The stock brake pads STINK in VW. In emergency situations, I always felt like the pads would slip and slide, but with the upgraded pads I never had any worries. It did eat away at the rotors very quickly, but thats why I sold the car :D

I <3 heated seats!!! hahaha Its so nice and toasty. I've been driving with a blank on during my morning drives, and its working lol.

motofan 11-14-2012 07:08 PM

Congrats!

I'm having a 10 GTI. But if I'm on the market, I'll get an FR-S :)

I own a MK6 GTI and test drove an FRS and I almost fell asleep power wise, it felt slow as hell. because It was a test drive with a salesman I couldn't do real spirited testing so I can't tell you how good it is but I trust the tons of reviews about that.

I can't live without usable torque so I'm waiting for the right FI kit for me to purchase an FRS.

Again, I felt disappointed with the lack of tech in the cabin, but the car feels good overall. It has a rattle in the trunk which I will look at soon enough, but it feels good. I do not regret the purchase. I miss my gauge cluster screen, but it works. I never read the speed odometer, I just use the RPM tack and digital speed gauge.

donutfilling 11-14-2012 07:39 PM

How do you compare it to the s2000?

Hanakuso 11-14-2012 08:20 PM

I've never felt the need for seat warmers. Well maybe once or twice in a year it would be nice. If anything I rather have seat coolers

Texas BRZ 11-14-2012 08:50 PM

Congrats, gunmetal5.

I'm sure you'll connect with the car even more once you better understand its strengths... Enjoy!

Zardoman 11-14-2012 08:55 PM

How the heck did you get 340 miles on one tank?
I think 310 was max on mine.

Demandred7 11-14-2012 09:49 PM

I had heated seats on my Acura RSX. Makes sense if you have leather, but honestly, heated seats with cloth - really? Someone asked me if my Corolla trade in had it. I asked them "why would it? It has cloth seats". Next thing everyone is going to start asking for heated stearing wheels and cooled seats. I have driven cars with these features. Just another thing to fix down the road when it stops working. First time I had heated seats, it felt like took a leak in my pants. Cooled seats are just weird with air blowing up into your bum. No thanks.

UPDATE: While I was typing, it happened. omg! I was kidding! The FR-S is less than $30k for a reason. A used Lexus IS250 or IS350 might be the car for you if you want a car to pamper you.

I got my Gti for $21,750 otd and it had cloth seats compariable to the brz's cloth seats, heated seats, sunroof, touch screen head unit. It's a nice feature. I can live with out it but it would have been nice to have come built in.

It feels like my gf old rx8 and s2000 made love and Out came the gt86 lol. Revy engine with tight stock bucket seats. Shifters are positioned almost identical. Oh and it doesn't have a topless mode. Both cars are great.

Must be nice to have pricing like that. :sigh: Canadian GTI is just over $29 K (MSRP). IMO it is ridiculous that there such a disparity in vehicle prices when the exchange rates have been closer to parity than I can remember.

I like the function of the stock head unit, but, I am not crazy about the ghetto look from 1980's. The GT86 in Europe looks like it has a sweet head unit available.

I am still undecided on the whole sunroof thing. I know the reason why they didn't put it in, but, it does brighten the interior of a car considerably. That, and when the drive thru window is above the top of the car, it would come in handy as a pass thru.

:lol:Love child of the RX8 and S2000.....that's awesome........it's funny because I can totally see it.
