The strength of an 86...

Hi All

Alas it has been a horrible week on SA's roads with numerous car accidents and several lives being lost. I am one of the thankful survivors who didn't suffer too much damage or injuries.

I was hit by a Mercedes Benz Vito who had been hit from behind by a Quantum on the R24 highway on Friday afternoon. The aftermath is attached. The car's massive rigidity and flexible plastic bumpers absorbed the blow quite well considering the mass of the vehicles that hit me. The boot still opens and closes without difficulty. The exhausts will obviously need to be changed along with the tow hitches and back bumper with some undercarriage repairs. Car still drives straight so suspension appears unharmed.

:respekt:

It deserves that 5 star ANCAP rating.

Drive safe people!

ek huil my dood!!!!

Vic_RSA 11-12-2012 02:20 AM

Not really sure how I restrained myself from pulling out my tow hitch and beating somebody to death... Only had this car 7 weeks... And the Vito had a bullbar!

Crewzern 11-12-2012 02:36 AM

Ouch ... sorry dude.:(

Gp1666 11-12-2012 02:43 AM

[edit] Their insurance must pay for a trd back :)

Vic_RSA 11-12-2012 03:47 AM

@ GeeTee86 - you're reading my mind :-)

Some prices I got this AM:

Rear bumper: R3272.61
Chrome Tips (each): R676.91
Exhaust silencers (each): R5834

All prices excl. VAT

Crewzern 11-12-2012 03:52 AM

Get the USA TRD Exhaust ...fits nicely to the current back bumpers. :w00t:

JouMaSeHoes 11-12-2012 04:15 AM

Glad you're OK.

But agree with all above, perfect time to make her sound better!

Vladror 11-12-2012 04:16 AM

good thing it's only material damage... even though it will still hurt like hell emotionally..

sav 11-12-2012 05:12 AM

Sorry to hear.
Did the actual exhaust get damaged, or only the tips?

Also, what do they mean by this:
Exhaust silencers (each): R5834

There is only one big box at the back, surely they wouldn't all need replacing?

Vic_RSA 11-12-2012 05:33 AM

From what I can see the exhaust bent to the right - now the thing is Toyota don't even know what these pipes look like obviously - still so new. I'm also getting the idea it should be a single silencer box in the middle - which I will insist is replaced. One tip is badly damaged but I think they can come off with a socket or something as there is a hole at the bottom.

FR-S TRD Exhaust looks and sounds nice...

Just kak timing for this hey!

v3rgil 11-12-2012 05:41 AM

Yep, one of my previous cars got rear ended once - you could barely see the damage from the outside but the valance was damaged all the way up to the spare wheel and the damage came to just under R40k.

If the other car hit you THAT hard you're pretty much guaranteed to have hidden body damage.

sieglapj 11-12-2012 09:44 AM

And now I bet u'r looking forward to the Tazz that they r going to give u as a coutesy car. LOL

Vic_RSA 11-12-2012 10:19 AM

What courteousy car... Like I would pay the extra! :-P

I'll send my Mini in for some TLC on the weekend and use that for a while. I'll definitely pull out the spare and have a look see - and make sure I show the assessors when they finally inspect it...

DBacon1052 11-12-2012 10:32 AM

It looks like you were hit with a forklift

Vic_RSA 11-12-2012 12:40 PM

Lol! It looks like it - those are because the caps for the tow hitches are AWOL - found one of them mutilated on the road - the other is MIA...

Checked the boot - spare wheel well looks fine - wheel and boot panels came out easily - everything looks straight. Now to see what it looks like below the bumper...

Thanks to Supermassive for this pic of his Scion - Looks like a bit of a crumple zone...

eish...

Vic_RSA 11-29-2012 08:14 AM

Looks like I'm waiting till next year to get my baby fixed... :(

sav 11-29-2012 11:24 AM

Ouch. :(

Have you gotten quotes yet?

Vic_RSA 11-29-2012 12:12 PM

Only one so far - but going with who my insurance recommend. I'll start pushing for them to at least order the parts and keep them till the time is right.

sav 11-29-2012 04:50 PM

Just make sure that the insurance's recommendation is Toyota approved. They've got a list of approved panel-beaters on their website under ToyotaCare.

If they're not approved you could end up with warranty issues.

Vic_RSA 11-30-2012 02:03 AM

Thankfully they are on the list. Not messing with my extended warranty... I got the full 6y/220000km...

sav 11-30-2012 07:34 AM

Cool. Eish, sounds like you're planning on keeping the car for a LONG time?

Vic_RSA 11-30-2012 08:12 AM

Of course... ;)

Unless a performance model comes out in the next two years, then may consider trading in...

sav 11-30-2012 11:16 AM

Cool, I doubt I'd keep mine longer than 3 years but then I'd probably trade it in on another 86. :)

Vic_RSA 12-01-2012 02:35 AM

My warranty will assist trade value for sure... Also probably on another 86... :)

sav 12-01-2012 02:51 AM

One thing I've learned in the past is that extras pretty much adds zero value to a car when it's time to trade in or sell. At best it'll make the car easier to sell.

Vic_RSA 12-02-2012 07:22 AM

Unless you stick with the same brand. Then they are a little more lenient I found.

Vic_RSA 12-02-2012 08:03 AM

Oh and would you all believe that I was nearly involved in an identical mishap this morning as at the beginning of this topic!

Why can't people drive this time of year?!!!

Matt_RSA 12-03-2012 01:00 AM

What do you mean this time of year?? People can't drive in general!

Vic_RSA 12-03-2012 01:42 AM

That is true but it gets worse after September I find. And the saddest bit is, it isn't the learner drivers as much as the older ones! At least folks are heading away and schools are closing - helps a bit.

Vic_RSA 05-31-2016 03:59 AM

Wow just got contacted by the lawyers after 4 years nearly and they're still pursuing the case! For the originals in this thread have a read and see how your mind changes @sav .
