Celica to FR-S?

Edit: So now that the FR-S is officially out. Do you guys still feel the same way about the car? I'm not liking the cheapness of the interior (no push start, plastic door inserts replacing the leather ones, cheap looking radio from a 88 camaro). I might wait a year or two now for a special edition like the High voltage series they offer in the TC line. I even heard TRD is working on a SC for this car.

I currently have a 2002 TRD Celica GTS with a 6spd Manual.

I'm hoping to upgrade to the FR-S when it eventually comes out. Curious to see if there alot of Celica owners/lurkers that are on here that may follow the path I'm about to take.

I also have a 91 MR2 turbo and recently sold an IS350 to get the celica, so I am not a stranger to Rear wheel drive.

keiri 11-08-2011 11:28 PM

'99 Celica GT owner here looking into purchasing my first RWD, manual car in the FR-S.

I'm going to keep the Celica though because I love the body style and I think I'd regret selling her since I can afford to keep both cars.

The topic involves the FR-S (reasons/thoughts on buying one as a Celica owner), so it's ok here.

fasteddy91 11-08-2011 11:59 PM

^Thank you kind sir.

Dark 11-09-2011 12:13 AM

I say do it. Maybe you can wait for feedback from owners and magazines first before deciding to get the car. I'm sure there will be ton of people getting the car when inventories are available, so feedback and experience will be out there shortly after the car release. You have to test drive first of course. For me, it's really hard to avoid an affordable modern sportcar. I will pick one up a few months after it releases.

My mistake. :respekt:

fasteddy91 11-09-2011 12:30 AM

The FR-S is at the top of the list.

Other cars I'm considering are:

G37 coupe Pro's...sexy looking, very powerful, manual tranny
Cons:pricey and heavy

Audi A5/S5 Pro's...gorgeous looking car, AWD, decent power(A5) very powerful(S5)
Con's: Heavy, pricey, reliabilty?
Genesis coupe: Pro's...22-26k price, good looks, manual tranny
Con's: it's a Hyundai (but they are getting respect), crappy feeling tranny, reliabily after 5-6 years???

Lexus 3rd gen IS coupe/sedan? Pro's: Lexus/Toyota, what can I say. mature sports/sedan car, reliable
Con's: Pricey and not a driver's car until you put all the fsport peformance parts, no manual tranny.

FR-S/BRZ Pro's: Lightweight, 200 hp-14:1 power to weight ratio, good gas mileage, love the red stitching on black interior, price under 30k, manual tranny.
Con's: don't know yet.

The one thing I like about light cars (Celica) is they are fun tossable cars.

IS250 RWD has manual tranny and it's 6spd too.

204hp, 3450 pound car, 0-60 7.8 seconds ,1/4 mile in 15.8@88mph

Tacoma truck tranny which sucks balls. Ask anyone on Club lexus. I almost bought a brand new 6spd manual IS250, but decided to get the 350 as the tranny I test drove grinded like crazy and made horrible noises.

Btw, the rumor is the 3rd gen IS is not going to have a Manual tranny.

I know right. 6spd in IS250 is not that fancy at all. I was thinking about get IS250 MT too, but I decided to go with used IS250 AWD because I found a good deal on that. I hope the rumor about no manual tranny is false. If Lexus is trying to make the brand more sporty, they should give mt on entry level sport sedan, and additionally offer dual clutch for higher end like F variant.

switchlanez 11-09-2011 02:14 AM

I had a Celica GT-S when it was still in production. A few MR2s and a G35 later, I miss the Celica and wish I'd kept it the whole time. The FR-S is a natural step up from the Celica and we fall squarely in its target demographic. It's what the Celica *should* have been (lightweight, high-revving, RWD) ever since the Supra spawned off its nameplate in the '80's.

The auto tranny in the third gen will be sportier than the second gen, similar to the IS-F. The only way to get a manual in the current model is to special order one.

If so, it will probably be like the one in new GS. Interesting. I hope they adapt 8spd for IS350 though.

Back to the topic. LOL

you are exactly right about the GS part.

Leeky 11-09-2011 04:40 AM

I think the 86 will be a good next-car to go to from a Gen7 Celica.

I just wish they were doing a 4wd turbo nutter version so that i could replace my GT4 with it.

Seeing as they arent, im going to have to find space to park a second car :(

Kage 11-09-2011 04:59 AM

Yeah I'm comming from a '00 celica gts 6 speed. This looks to be the perfect upgrade, but I'm not getting rid of the celica I'm letting my brother drive it (so he has to pay the insurance ;))

celicajim 11-09-2011 07:17 AM

I wonder how the rev range will feel compared to the nothing nothing BAM nature of the 2ZZ. I love how you have to really rev the 2ZZ out to keep it singing. It kinda makes it a bit exciting hitting lift and having it scream to 8300rpms.

I drove an RX8 and felt bored by the linear power curve. Also drove the Mazdaspeed3 and while it had a lot more pull than the Celica it felt like it was running out of puff after 5000rpms.

The extra power and torque in the lower and midrange might be enough to make the FT86 feel faster and still be exciting. Hopefully...

Chibi86 11-09-2011 08:04 AM

Same here Celicajim, I like driving my GTS all the time and rev high, sometimes I have the feeling that it'll never stop rev till 8200 rpm !

I'm asking myself if I go to an FT 86 or if I tune my 2ZZ to get 9500+ rpm that'll probably be amazing ( and cheaper than buying a new car ).

I really hope there'll be a "lift" mod with the D4S of Yamaha, givin a nice kick at middle range and more torque too.

But as many said, don't hurry and think twice before buying the Hachiroku, we must Test drive it first, because sometimes it's just few things between two generations.

I drove a 6th gen celica with 3SGE rev 3 ( 175bhp) and I was surprised by the power and the handling, it's really close to my 7th gen.

The best point for me it's the LSD on the 86, because with my 7th gen when it's raining if I go throttle max I just stay on place making the engine screaming loud... -_-

yarik83 11-09-2011 06:38 PM

I owned
1986 celica
1987 celica
1993 all trac celica
four 1994 celicas.

I have been with www.6gc.net pretty much since the beginning (which is a lot of years). In all that time I did notice a trend that celica drivers are picky. For example many 6gc owners do not like 7th gen celicas.

I do not know if they will like FT-86 though. 6th generation celica is voluptious, smooth flowing, curvy and gorgeous from every angle. By contrast FT-86 is radical, chop chop with lines and other funky panels. I figure FT-86 may be on the shopping list for a lot of 6gc owners who's celicas are going out of commission as time flies by... but FT-86 will never be the same.

Now if toyota released mopar-like 6th generation all track celica here in usa... there woul d be thousands drooling to get that car. (even if it had no changes to it at all... just start reproducing 1994-1999 all track gt4 celicas as they were).

mmmm... begins to drool.

Most of the guys who have checked it out are either on the fence or kind of "meh" about it since it's clearly putting out the around the same power as the BEAMS 3S.

I see the FT-86's rear half, well the FR-S concept at least, as a mesh of the 6th gen's wide, curvy hips mixed with some of the angularity of the 7th gen while the front is like a radically liberal "modernization" of the 6th's. I think it's a lovely design that incorporates a wide set of hips with a gorgeous front-end.

I can't wait to have it sitting next to my 6gc.

It's my first post on this forum and I have been lurking for about a year and a bit lol. I have a GT-Four ST205 and personally, I don't think my car is worth selling to purchase the FRS. I am going to keep my Celica because I know I'll regret selling it. I'm looking at a new car next year and I'm looking at both the FRS and S2K. I know they are different cars all together but the current price on S2K's are really tempting!

quick picture of my ride!

I'm looking at the exact same cars and I don't think we're alone.

Spiritama 11-10-2011 12:05 AM

I love my Celica but an upgrade would be nice
Im going to have to test drive and make a decision.
The FR-S seems to have a good recipe but you can't tell if its any good without a taste test.

Chokonen888 11-10-2011 12:47 AM

Went from a ST185 to JZZ30 and now going to this. Just hoping I can get a LHD version as my track experiences with RHD here in J-land have been less than impressive.:iono:

TRDChamp 11-10-2011 02:26 AM

Celica owner here. I'm considering getting the FR-S but I will probably wait about a year after it goes for sale.

I would definitely agree with that. Nice car btw

I've wanted a 6th gen GT-Four FOREVER. Always wished they sold here in the states. If Toyota came out with a successor carrying the same spirit... I'd pick that over the FR-S or Supra successor!!

fr-s is perfect for me as a celica driver, i want a new car, i will miss my celica dearly, but i want rwd but i don't want to loose how fun the car is.
This can needs to be able to:
1. hit the redline everyday
2. be fun even when driving casually( not speeding but using less brakes when the corners come up :D)
3. be able to put car seats in it if not ill have to wait till my son can be put into a booster seat
4. good gas mileage for long road trips
5. be funner drifting in the winter time than my fwd celica lol...

I do imagine car meets will eat this thing up :D plus every Thursday we have 10 dollar drag racing all night at one car meet I'd love to go to :D

fasteddy91 12-02-2011 02:41 PM

So now that the FR-S is officially out. Do you guys still feel the same way about the car? I'm not liking the cheapness of the interior (no push start, plastic door inserts replacing the leather ones, cheap looking radio from a 88 camaro). I might wait a year or two now for a special edition like the High voltage series they offer in the TC line. I even heard TRD is working on a SC for this car.

no_name 12-02-2011 02:49 PM

So long as this thing is priced like a Scion and drives like the reviews say, I wouldn't car if it was lined with unsanded wood.

swift996 12-02-2011 03:02 PM

Epic FAIL by Toyota. I was interested until I saw the crap offering they are bringing to the US. It would cost a lot of money to buy the car new and spend the $8k to get it to look like it should (the UK model). I like the tail lights better but that interior is a MAJOR disappointment.

xantonin 12-02-2011 03:04 PM

The FR-S is indeed the spiritual successor to the Celica.

Agreed.

Although initially I was disappointed, I have come to think the FR-S is still a great choice to replace my 6gc. If the rumors of the BR-Z starting at 24k are true then I can see the FR-S selling for 22k base which is pretty good for me; even if I spend more to bring it up to my liking I appreciate the fact that it didn't come with a bunch of stuff I paid for only to remove like navigation.

I'm still in for one.

Rainbow86 12-02-2011 06:12 PM

funnything is, im buying a celica 00 in the next maybe 3 months, then going to wait until the 86 TRD version comes to australia (lol....) and then buy the 86 TRD with all the extras.

i might have to wait forever...............................

I've been let down each time more and more info came out. The only good news is that they got slapped by many enthusiasts and such saying the car needs more power, or that "they" want more power. 200hp and 151tq isn't going to cut it, especially at some of the club track meets I attend. I'm sure it'll still be "fun" to drive, but people seem to think that if you add more power then it'll be less fun. And then you have these people from Toyota with a straight face saying, "power, awd, and grip" isn't fun, what a crock and they know it. Sliding around is fun, I know, I do it now, but good lap times are fun too. But even still, now there's more and more talk about a model getting the power it needs (for me to be interested) from FI, so when that model hits I'll be taking a hard look at it and the new WRX that will be arriving around that time.

Gearbanger 12-03-2011 10:06 AM

Ball was dropped. 200 bhp and 2800 lb curb weight equals a dog.
