AutoX summary on STX build--NOW FOR SALE!!!

Okay, here are the new rims, powdercoated Gunmetal. Setup is abt the same as the OEM setup, while being significantly wider. Car otherwise is completely stock.

Although it looks a 4x4 (ASTs can't come soon enough).

2 best recorded runs (got PAX on 1st run). Car is wicked loose @ times (see vid 2 @ the end of the sweeper). I went 1/2 sec quicker in fun run, but I let my 108whp Miata-driver buddy have 4 back-to-back fun runs w/ it. He went quicker than me. He is very fast (and 60lbs lighter), but still bummed he went quicker. He couldn't go quicker than me in my GT-R though--so I'm still learning the momentum thing; as I've always had high-HP cars--never a momentum car...

3rd event--starting to get the hang of it. Had PAX, until my competitor stormed out of nowhere (and I mean nowhere) to pip me on his last run. Dangit! Was off FTD by 1.3 secs to DP car.

Car still all stock except rims/tires & now lightweight batt. This thing is going to ROCK in full STX trim!

Not sure why it's not embedding.

nice run

Gearhd79 12-09-2012 06:25 PM

those rims are really growing on me too..was all about the Enkeis but now u got me thinking

GTB/ZR-1 01-06-2013 09:31 AM

My STX status is still quite lame (I got nothin' on Scooby South lol!), as all I've added to the car is an Injen intake since the last installment. BUT, I have a Motiv over & front catted pipe waiting to go on, along w/ a Nameless catback soon to arrive. Tune to follow.
MCS coilovers are on their way too, along w/ Vorshlag camber plates.

First event of '13 w/ the FAST group out of the Tampa area. I had a battle w/ our moderator Dave-ROR for 1st place in our class out of 6 cars (not sure what else was running w/ us, as we had them covered by a good bit).
I also had Dave covered by almost a second until he blazed his last run--in high fashion--by drifting on the turnaround & came within 2/10ths of me.

He's a sand-bagging Drift-King (not to mention very fast)! lol

looks like a pretty fast course. Assuming you were in second gear, how close to maxed out were you?

On the limiter twice & into 3rd on the way back after the 1st slalom.

8k redline FTW...;) good runs George...

Took 1st in STX again (2nd in PAX), today & top 10 out of ~60 cars. Added a Perrin pulley (can feel a touch better throttle response). Car is still virtually stock & am hoping all that's coming will make it better than I anticipate!

Thx, Bill--using your build as my (mostly) template.

BIG mods pending...

Those wheels look amazing. Nice runs too!

GTB/ZR-1 01-27-2013 06:07 PM

Added new Nameless axle-back, since last update.

Sill all stock suspension/alignment. This venue is a gravelly dust-bowl. Making matters even more interesting, I ran in the 1st round, while it was extra-slippy--big fun!

I had to adjust rear pressures to help compensate. Won the class, but got killed in PAX (11th?) by the later run groups running in much better conditions.

Also, hit the limiter hard 2x--car goes into suspended animation. lol

Another useless vid, but fun runway-style course. Picked up 1.6 secs on this run after adjusting pressure & course attack.

Okay, time to get serious & stop playing around...

Springs are here--dampers are on their way.

Email into Sam abt his bar.

Header/tune hopefully coming soon.

These Camber Plates are works of art--if they function anywhere as good as they look, then..........

Are there camber plates that also increase caster? My BMW plates (TC Kline) have added caster, at a slight decrease in camber. Is there already a lot of caster in these cars and an increase isn't desirable?

Remains to be seen what kind of caster these will produce...

These things need more camber help, than caster, IMO.

Sam Strano 02-02-2013 12:48 AM

Aligned my car with KW's and offset mounts (not camber plates. Pretty much could've set it to -4. Not that I did... or would want to.

The Vorshlag plates increase caster. The Whiteline Com-C fixed offset mounts also increase caster. Whether more caster than what we have is better is a question better left to the setup experts.

Just curious, all the camber plates I saw at SEMA didn't have caster provisions. The BMW gets 4 degrees negative camber while increasing caster. I like the self centering effect of caster personally, if you can get the camber you want and also get caster. Strut cars seem to work well with increased caster, moreso than double a-arm cars (I think... Sam???)

Caster is like most anything where too much of it isn't a good thing. Adding caster increases the weight jacking effect while in a turn where it will further unload the inside rear wheel. Something to especially keep in mind for a torsen differential.

I wasn't thinking about the weight jacking and the torsen diff as much as trying to gain camber on a strut car that loses camber with body roll. OTOH, the low CG of the Twins might cause less body roll and camber loss...

Sam Strano 02-07-2013 09:11 PM

I don't run a ton of caster in anything I own. Never wanted a lot for weight jacking but also for response. If you are very camber limited, its a way to get just a touch more camber when you crank the wheel over but say on the Corvette you give up camber to get caster, I want the camber (though I also don't tend to run as much camber as many either), strut or otherwise. Don't need to personally.

Things are starting to get serious...

Nice brakes! Are you doing anything for the rear? Stock with upgraded pads or a complete kit too?

Scooby South 02-13-2013 05:21 PM

thought it was already serious..;)

GTB/ZR-1 02-13-2013 10:07 PM

Didn't let these sit in the boxes for more than 6 hours before they were on. lol

Actually, I'm going to Roebing this weekend w/ the PCA guys to do some instructing--so their arrival was quite timely.

I verified the weight savings @ ~10 lbs/corner. Talk abt having your cake & eating it, too...

And bedding them just now, put a hurt on my stomach--felt like my dinner wanted to come up. DOH! These things retard forward motion QUICK!

GTB/ZR-1 02-24-2013 08:58 PM

Added Sam's bar--VERY noticeable on my completely stock suspended car.

There were 3 Twins there @ event. Kiddo86 (RTR) & Sparks (sp?), also in STX. Quickest twin by 1.xxx.

Had the class of 9 covered by a good margin & was ready to pack the car up for the 2 hr drive home & was pipped hard by a Type-R--got me by .7xx on his last pass. Must have been sandbagging as my car had it covered by almost a second.
The car's weak spot is how short 2nd gear is & how it shuts of power on the limiter. I went into 3rd a few more times on subsequent runs, but it slowed me down. That Type-R was just abt/on on the limiter in 2nd (dangit!)

The suspension metamorphosis should happen this week (coilovers/plates/alignment/corner weight etc)--so it should really come alive.

Add header/e85/extended rev range & not cut on limiter & it'll be cooking w/ gas.

Quickest raw by .3--where did I hit the cone?! (what's up w/ embedding?!)

^^^ Actually they were dialing in teh Type R. as well. Christian is good friend.. They were trying different things.. and yes thats the one that will be at the tour with us..he's waiting on his Rivals to show up.. and couple of other things.. seems everybody is scrambling to get situated before Dixie...LOL ...me included.. Sparks is a very mile prep.. although he just got the Z2's.. funny part is that Mike King 'was' going to codrive with him in prep for my car.. but turns out Mike had to work.. :/.. so I don't think Christian/and Codriver were sandbaggin.. just found something that made them faster.. Christian said they were constantly adjusting (new MCS suspension) ... gonna be a FUN battle..:) for sure

Oh.. and tune will bring the Revlimit up to 8k..;)

Bill

Aznsky 02-24-2013 09:12 PM

Seems like an interesting place for autox, your run-off room is essentially the dirt/rocks and bushes on the side....would make it kind of scary to push the limit.

But nice driving!

Thx, Bill--glad to hear that Type-R was of serious prep--don't feel so bad now. Shaun said Mike was supposed to be there (and so were the Merediths). Would have been nice to see how far back my car would have been in its current state.

Can't wait to make it an honest STX car--gonna be a little screamer, methinks.

Great little track--some elevation change (which we have NONE of in FL). It actually wasn't too bad in person as far as runoff.

Thx for the props!

It's abt time...

Cooking w/ 'gas' now lol

On...

Components saved 5.3 lbs total--even w/ beefy camber plates (every little bit helps).

Not aligned yet & ride height not finalized. Even w/o adjustments, the car feels like it wants to turn RIGHT NOW on initial turn-in--nice...

Pics below--car is still filthy from my last event where I hit rain.
