NEW Subaru 086A BRZ STi impression and info
1 Attachment(s)
From Holiday Auto via 7tune: http://www.7tune.com/subaru-086a-sti/
Attachment 111 The regular Subaru 086A is expected to use Subaru's EJ20 flat 4 boxer engine with D4-S direct/port injection, Aisin 6 speed tranny, and Lexus IS rear differential. Projected power has been anywhere from 160ps to 200ps. Holiday Auto (via 7tune) now reports that the Subaru 086A STi Version will use the EJ25 2.5L engine which produces 240-250ps. An EJ25 turbo version is also in consideration. Any Subaru 086A STi model will receive wider fenders all around to accomodate beefier tires/wheels. No timing has been confirmed yet, but the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show or 2012 Tokyo Auto Salon may be good guesses. |
Damn that's a nice looking photochop. Love the extra body work and of course the EJ25 engine news :) I assume toyota would also have an EJ25 version (maybe TRD version)?
|
Toyota better not let Subie bring out the only good version of this car
Of course... if that does happen, everyone who buys the Toyota variant will be doing a motor swap within a year... |
I hope the toyo version will have a LSD. But doesn't the IS have an open diff?
|
I don't think there will be one with Toyota emblems and then one with Subaru emblems..
|
its really going to come down to the length for me..I need a snowboard to fit..:)

You could always mount it on the roof  |
I was already excited about a small, lightweight successor to the hatchiroku. This makes me even more excited. This is will be the most excited I've been about an upcoming car for as long as I can remember!
|
No mention of drivetrain with that STI story, eh? I wonder if this means it will still be RWD or AWD? I actually hope it remains RWD, if only because I want this car to remain true to its AE86 heritage, and not be bogged down by further weight...

Good point about the extra weight for AWD. How much more would it weigh? |
Quote:
100 lbs isn't that big a deal (especially with an extra 50 hp under the hood), but it's not too hard to go from a "lightweight" corner carver to a more bloated vehicle. Then again, STIs weight between over 3200 lbs and no one seems to complain about those things, so even if this car weighs in at 3000 lbs, if it has 250 hp, (poss even more with boost) then it'll still be killer. |

There is really no purpose to an AWD car unless you are rallying... FR works just fine for road or track.
|
If suby is coming out with an sti version with awd it's going to cost around 40k. The current sti is already at 35 and also coupes are generally pricer than their four door counterparts.

Furthermore, there's no way a car Toyota wants to bring to market at 20-21,000 get marked up double. Not a chance. Considering the current WRX has 265 hp and can be had for around 25k, I can't see this car costing much more than that. |
I think high performance models (STI) will get turbocharging and they always have been or else it's going to be pretty weak in performance. AWD just keeps the tradition for Subaru. Suby might just offer the 2.5L NA with AWD to differentiate from Toyota for the base version.
|
It would be very easy for them to make the subaru version awd. Subaru has yet to release a vehicle that does not turn all four. Also it is much easier to turn a rwd platform to awd than it is to change a ff to awd. Either way I think it is a definite possibility. The videos and released info are not enough to know thus far.

Subaru has indeed been selling non-AWD system cars around the world, just not in the North America. R1 and R2 have been sold in Japan for years. Front wheel drive version Impreza has emerged into the European market recently. |
I doubt the AWD will come into play after reading an article today where the chief engineer stated it will be "the best car for drifting". He goes on to talk about how they discovered 50:50 is not the way to go for drifting blah blah blah.
The point being that they [Toyota] are being way too conscious about weight, distribution of weight & resurrecting the AE86 fundamentals to factor in an AWD system. The entire purpose of involving Subaru is to use the low center of gravity in the boxer (for handling potential) and not the drive train of a current model. |

The blinker lights look very similar to the one testing. I wonder if this rendering was the way the Subaru version was intended to look like. |
I thought this was a new post until I saw date on 7tune! It does look very similar to the mule and they even called the EJ20. mmm...

If this is the real deal and it's slotted to have a 250bhp 2.5L EJ25 then I'll definitely be getting the Subaru variant, even though I could get the scion at employee discount I would much rather the STI version.
|
ooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
|
I don't know what to believe any more after reading Moto's info. 250 NA would be perfect. Not that I won't be happy with the 197/200hp. But 250 would like a cherry on top.
|
I would be thrilled with 250. 200 is nice, that can (and will) be fixed to a higher, non-NA state.
|
Just remember that the article is about as old as this site, so...
(it may not hold accurate information... shhh...) |

The only thing unknown is what Subaru/Yamaha are going to do with the head design. Besides putting Direct Injection with Port Injection that is. |
