GT86 commercial: This Is How Your Wife Reacts When You Buy a Toyota GT 86

We've seen commercials before in which the car is depicted as a toy for a boy. But this ad, celebrating the white trash car, is not just that. If you buy it as a man you'll not only have a midlife crisis, you'll also have an instant relationship crisis. What a brilliant (online) film, quickly switching between the aesthetics of real men riding their horsepowers and the hysteria of their other halves, using the hidden -- but staged -- camera trend. The two scenes alternating are so extremely different from each other that the ad doesn't look like anything else and turns this Toyota GT86 into a poignantly attractive object. It was created by Happiness Brussels, produced by Caviar, directed by Arnaud Uyttenhove, and shot by Dimitri Karakatsanis.

a bit depressing really

wbradley 11-10-2012 01:03 PM

I fucking loved that!

Reminds me of my first wife when I bought my first new Integra GS. It was a loaded 4 dr M5 ''96 and she wanted me to get a new Grand Prix 4 dr instead.

Current wife likes the Twin. She was going to dress up as an FR-S on Haloween to get more attention!

Superhatch 11-10-2012 01:15 PM

That was awesome and sad at the same time. I can totally understand the frustration on the part of the wives (financial planning with your SO ftw), but the feeling of driving this car makes me not care about money at all.

A bold and awesome commercial for sure.

whtchocla7e 11-10-2012 01:15 PM

Haha, take that women!!

Wes 11-10-2012 01:46 PM

Lol that was funny, but kind of stupid at the same time lol

travace 11-10-2012 01:50 PM

ending was sad... that one bitch was smashing his new car :(

dem00n 11-10-2012 01:52 PM

Hey look, more reasons not to get married!

_F-R-S_ 11-10-2012 02:08 PM

Haha that was great

RaceR 11-10-2012 02:22 PM

Awesome comercial!

Its like me driving, only on snow.. And the dude hanging out the window with that big grin on his face. Its like the combination of the smile on my mouth and my "inside smile".
Can relate to this.
Im glad I don't have a wife. A buddy of mine would so like to have this car. But aint gonna happen thanks to wife and priorities.

RaceR 11-10-2012 02:29 PM

Who needs a wife anyway. You can have the best of both worlds. GT86 and a girl on the side.

:burnrubber:

RaceR, I want to go driving with you some time :burnrubber:

Part of me wants to say "Amen! Single people unite! :happy0180:" and another part of me wants to point out that a lucky few do manage to pick their spouses well and have the best of both. Case in point is Peter Egan who writes articles for Road&Track about a constant stream of project cars, wonderful road trips and car shows, all with the support and participation of his wife, Barb.

JDMenrique 11-10-2012 02:50 PM

This is awesome, good thing my wife actually encouraged me to get one.

Nice, belgian commercial? (they spoke Dutch and French)
Btw, I've noticed that the same car has been used on other reviews/preview videos. I've seen the license plate on the car (1-DGS-xxx) before ;)

Interesting. In that case it's probably a press fleet car, but I would have thought they'd use a pristine car for commercials :iono:

RRnold 11-10-2012 03:22 PM

That was great! Reminds me of my psycho ex and the reason why I dumped her a long time ago! :bellyroll:

Women are such hypocrites. They spend shittons of money on jewelry, and clothes, and a bunch of other crap, and when they buy a car without telling us we have to put up with it. But when we buy something for ourselves, they get really mad.

WTF?

That commercial, pretty accurately depicts how my GF reacted when I brought my car home.

:clap::clap: Chris Rock's old stand ups were the best! I saw one of his gigs at the Laugh Factory back in the days and everyone was rolling. It seemed that when he got his teeth fixed, he wasn't as funny anymore. :bellyroll:

Mine didn't tell me to get the BRZ but she likes it.

That said, if I bought a car I couldn't afford she'd be pissed, and rightfully so.

draggin_az 11-10-2012 06:58 PM

fistpoint 11-10-2012 07:20 PM

I can't believe they spent money, resources and time on this piece of shit commercial instead of fixing that idiotic cricket sounding pump.

Fame does that to some people; seems like they start trying too hard or they stop trying altogether.

I got this reaction from everyone in my family when I brought mine home. Still get shit thrown my way from them for it on a daily basis but nothing a spirited drive doesn't take care of ;)

JPxM0Dz 11-10-2012 10:51 PM

Wow this video really hit home. My wife and I would have been perfect in that vid LOL

I secretly drove and hid my BRZ for almost three months before I told her I bought a new car
We're good now, but the drama was pretty intense when she first found out.
This is the third car I've bought without her knowledge. Two of which were for me, the other for her. I don't recommend this to anyone unless your prepared for a world of grief
I have no excuse, I just can't help myself :D

My wife told me to buy a new BMW. (bc I loved my old E39, and maybe to show off my status??? I dunno.). The first time *I* ever saw a BRZ in person was when I picked mind up (June 1st). I had placed the order based on pics and magazine reviews. Price wasn't even announced when I ordered my car.

So, I got the call 6/1, raced to the dealer after work. My wife showed up an hour or so later with my son. First time she was seeing the car. It got a lot of attention from other car shoppers as well as I was sitting in it. Wife looks in the back seat "it's small!" "Too late!" I said, "Already signed the paperwork!". :D

She loves the car, but is quite jealous. She doesn't drive stick, so she can never take it out - though enjoys when we all pile in to go somewhere.

I keep waiting for her to make me sell one of my other cars, but recently when I brought up the idea, she balked "you're not going to sell any of your cars, who are you kidding?". Damn, after 15 years, the woman knows me! :D

(in the past, I've taken my wife with me to EVERY car I've bought, new or used. Each time though she has the same reaction "What - you're buying it? I thought we were just looking?!!". My 3 year old son is already pulling that angle at Target: "Can we go to the toy section, I just want to look.". I don't think we've gotten him out of there without something in his hand each time. It's in the genes - how can I complain?! :D )
