FYI Engine Chirping Fix

Just took my FRS in today for this:

http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9836

Although the TSB says it only takes 2 hours to fix, my car will be spending the weekend at servco after 9+ hours of being there today. Just an FYI if you are planning on taking your car in. They did mention that this was the first car brought in for this complaint so I understand that they are learning the car as they work on it. Im not really complaining as they gave me a loaner just wanted to give the other members a heads up.
Also this is the second time I had to bring my car in as they didn't have the parts the first go around.

UPDATE: Just got the car back today. They worked all day friday...they dont work on weekends...then apparently the only guy that can do it called in sick monday and they finally finished it today at 3pm. All in all they took over 18 hours of labor. Also there is a fun little part on my work statement about there being "road testing". This was further confirmed by the fact that my temp gauge was at about 50% when I picked it up. I hope this isn't to be expected of servco. Cause it was some pretty crappy service. But I have now paved the way for the rest of you lol.

travace 11-10-2012 02:50 AM

be prepared for it to not actually fix anything. the chirps are coming back jsut like when the car was new after a few hundred miles.

Well that sucks, I know its not a real problem, but the sound just bothers the shit out of me.

travace 11-10-2012 03:13 AM

yea the sound is embarrassing... "hey check out my car..... CHIRP CHIRP CHIRP"

Fantum's86 11-11-2012 05:40 AM

Might have mine done on the 15th.

Yep, mine's getting worse and worse too. I can hear it up to 2k RPM. The frequency of the noise goes up as the RPM goes up. So, I hear it when I cruise at 35 mph in 5th and 45 mph in 6th. It's a bearable noise, but embarrassing in a parking lot. :( I'll bear with it until they find a fix that actually fix.

markmatley 11-13-2012 04:43 PM

My crickets are overshadowed by my SRT exhaust. Bwahahaha! But sorry to hear everyones troubles. Hope a proper OE/aftermarket solution comes out soon.

ANyone tried to find some non-E10 gas? I'm not sure anyone has it in Super though.

Sigh-on-Rice 12-05-2012 08:18 PM

Is there anyone who got this done by Servco and the noise didn't come back after 1k miles?

Seems like a 7-11 in Waianae does..

I just got the chirps at 500miles :(

Rougenite 02-07-2013 03:17 AM

Only filled with chevron premium, no chirps, 1700 miles tonight :).

thebear21 02-07-2013 07:53 PM

so if i take it in and i have a perrin LWC pulley and intake and exhaust and tune... is that okay? or should i just deal with the CHIRRRRRP

Shipwreck 02-08-2013 02:29 AM

I just picked mine up from servco today and they said that the chirp was normal because thats the first question that I had for them

Crackseed 02-08-2013 04:11 AM

I also picked mine up today [from Mapunapuna Servco] but I showed them the TSB on the chirp being abnormal and both my rep and her manager were not even aware of this. The manager mentioned he'd heard it on a car that came in to be serviced [BRZ] back when he worked on the Subaru side but they both copied the print-out I brought and said if that cropped up on my car to call them and they'd work with me to service it, though both also said it was hopefully much less prevalent with the newer 2013s.

I guess we'll see in a couple hundred miles >.>

Calling bullshit, i went over that with them when I was there picking mine up >_>. BTW I was picking up my plates and saw the new ones out there :)

As for the mods: It has nothing to do with anything you mentioned. Its an O-ring on a puel pump. Put quality gas in it, you wont have a problem. Besides cars have all been made after the TSB (least if you just got one, mine was made in december nad picked up very shortly after) and it SHOULD come from the factory fixed.

Yep, it's the high pressure fuel pump. Not really high pressure, but that's what they say. I don't mind the crickets and chirping and whatever extra noises the car makes. Part of being a boxer owner to hear all the mechanical nuances.

I've been filling with shell premium. I just fueled up with chevron premium and it seems that the chrips are gooooooooone! :happyanim:

Shipwreck 02-10-2013 08:07 PM

I just hit 100 miles and I think I already have them but they really dont bother me

Yep :), you can even use half and half if you want! Something that Chevron has in its gas should dilute and make it alright :)

jek127 02-11-2013 04:01 PM

Ive been using pretty much exclusively chevron premium and I still get the chirps :(

Try gettign some 2 stroke oil, drop a LITTLE in....like maybe a spoonful per tank. I cant remember the exact ratio needed. its on the forum somewhere though!

If anything take it back to the dealership, they will install a new pump (for free) Its a known problem :). LMK if the 2 stroke oil works (it has lubricative properties american gas does not)

jek127 02-12-2013 03:41 PM

Thanks roguenite I will definitely report the problem and see if I can get the free pump put in when I take the car in this Saturday for it's first oil change.

Crackseed 02-13-2013 04:03 AM

Did my first fill-up today using non-ethanol from the Aloha 7-11 in Waianae that has it.

92 Octane, so pretty much spot on for the car. It feels nice to pour LESS gas into the car then my old one and still have better mileage. Ahh, FR-S I love you.

No chirps so far but I'm right on the cusp of the 300 mile mark so we will see.

I think my chirps started around 300,maybe even 4 or 500. It occurs most often after the car is warmed up or has been driven for a while. I hope it doesn't happen to you :( Not that it has any effect on performance or my engines gonna blow up or anything but it's just really annoying....

"Hey cool car... but why is it making that noise"
:(

No shit. People keep asking me if I have a fucked up belt somewhere or something.

jek127 02-17-2013 12:31 AM

So I went to Kaneohe Toyota today and the rep that I got told me the TSB didn't apply to my car isn't acceptable because it's out of the vin # range and shouldn't affect my car. I stared at him blankly and said.."but it does. The problem is still there". he said that I would have to schedule a separate appointment for it.

I'm thinking I might just ignore it and leave it alone. Since my car isn't in the vin range he made it seem as though the fuel pump replacement would be on MY dime.

That's still not acceptable. The chirp IS an issue and is still occurring on newer cars. Even if the VIN isn't in the range, it's obvious Toyota/Scion hasn't quite nailed the issue down.

You could check at the Mapunapuna Scion as when I spoke with them they both said "It shouldn't happen on your car but if it does, just bring it in and we will work on it per the TSB" so, you might have more luck there?

This. Picked up my car last week with six miles. Noticed the chirp the second day with less than 100 miles on the odometer. Still a problem

markmatley 02-19-2013 06:37 PM

I love my crickets under the hood at idle...then when I floor it they're all growling like Cujo!

It makes people take a second look at the car. =P

But I am trying to see if any additive would work to fix this. I just gave the car some Chevron fuel injector cleaner additive, and will try to listen to it more often today. I may have to gas up with no ethanol and see if the combo works too.

High pressure is realy the only way to describe a 200BAR capable fuel system buddy, not sure what to tell you...most fuel systems are 45-90PSI the DI pump underhood bumps pressure to 14.7x200 or 2940PSI, so yes really it is High Pressure.

Also FYI, the fact that it is a boxer has absolutely positively NOTHING to do with the fact that it chirps, in fact the only "boxer" noises that differ from a normal Inline motor is the exhaust note which is in large part due to the fact that most have unequal length exhaust paths due to the engine configuration.

Thanks for the use"full" post

Rougenite 02-19-2013 07:45 PM

Your tone is a little 'off' makes you sound like a total tool.

Its actually 14.5, not .7. Go ahead, check it.

Simmer down..my response was referring to what our dealership has told me. They are specifically stating that the noise (chirps) are from the high pressure pump. Sorry for the confusion on whether or not a high pressure pump is high pressure. Sentence structure error on my part.

As for the boxer engine noises, note I said all mechanical nuances...This means a sum of all the parts and their respective nuances (which includes sounds).

There are enough people here that are perturbed with the crickets, and some might say our crappy gas, and we (you and I) don't need to inflame it more than needed.

Cheers for the pressure specs and more detailed info on our high pressure pumps.

Besides that point, he did bring up useful pump specs for those who didn't know of it or cared for it until now. :happy0180:

0o i must be super lucky then, the only noice i get is from the tranny, gotta change that fluid out :(.

Crackseed 02-20-2013 02:43 AM

Broke 500 miles today - no chirping yet. So it does seem to be hit or miss per car but I'll definitely keep listening for it.
