Tow hooks

So I ordered a pair of tow hooks today, and I was looking at DIY guides. Simple enough, But my question is... What stops somebody from just stealing the tow hook? They sell for 100+. Or am I missing something.

86_ZN6 11-08-2012 04:20 AM

thats why tow hooks are not for the streets. they can easily be stolen

Chen 11-08-2012 04:50 AM

this is unfortunate. :(

86_ZN6 11-08-2012 05:00 AM

so you just spent 100 just for cosmetic upgrade? and not really use it on a track??

I plan on tracking it after tire/coil upgrades.

how bout tracking your car first running stock?

you need to learn how the car behaves before going further with major mods

StuAU 11-08-2012 05:16 AM

I keep them on when off the track, I have had cars hit while parked on the side of the road way too often.

Although the hook does not stop it, it makes me feel better when I know it's punched through the idiots bar who hasn't left me a note.

I agree with you. I do a little bit of tracking, learning the ropes day by day. The coils are just what I have planned in the future. But going back to the original post. I just dont want to take the hooks out after I install them.

i dont know how to fully secure it but it can and will be stolen especially if it's branded.

Sounds like im going to have to make a habit of removing it after track days.

red Locktight - see link below. Doubt it's really the answer. Needs heat to remove - be carefull with it!

Hanakuso 11-08-2012 03:31 PM

Just take them off when you're not at the track or on the side of the road in a ditch.

QFry 11-08-2012 03:44 PM

spot weld them in place...

JesseE 11-08-2012 03:51 PM

Keep it in your trunk and only use when necessary. Honestly, your not a nascar driver who needs to get towed off a track in 10 seconds to keep 100,000 fans happy. Keep it in the trunk and forget about it until you need it.

If you bought it for looks.... then your doing it wrong. :-P

Chen 11-08-2012 07:10 PM

man, i was hoping to be able to keep these on...

to save the hassle of having to worry bout em.

Just leave them on and use red locktite. It works well, and would make the tow hooks too much of a pain to remove to be worth it.

Btw it's your car do what ever you want with it.

Wouldn't you worry about them more getting stolen... I don't care how much locktite you put on it, if they want it, they will get it... and if you were to weld it... what happens when you want to take your bumper off? cut it off?

i agree. it just sounds like a smarter option to just take it off and put it when I need it.

that was the first thing that came to mind. blue will get it on there good, but red... that thief is gonna have to put some muscle into it and REALLY want it.

Does the FRS not come equipped with factory Tow Hooks? I've seen plenty of these cars being towed on the back of flatbeds and not a single one of them had an aftermarket Tow Hook installed.

I'd say save your money - 99% of the reason street driven cars have these is for hardparking purposes only. It's a cheap way to get that racecar look yet no actual race cars use these branded hooks (at least not around here)

ayau 01-05-2013 10:40 PM

The better solution would be to use the OEM tow hooks. Just buy an extra one for the back. They're not the most aesthetically pleasing hooks to look at, but they get the job done and no one really wants to steal an ugly piece of steel.
