My baby is opti-guarded

Just want to give a big shout out to James from sunset detailing OC. He opti-coated (not guarded) my baby yesterday. Did an outstanding job. If y'all need it done here in SoCal he is the man to call. Drove all the way down here to Chula Vista from OC!

I originally had mine coated in Wolfs Hard Body, and it pretty much all but wore off within 2 months. Got it recoated in OptiCoat and it still looks perfect a month later! Enjoy it!

Looks nice. Isn't it a good feeling when your car's finish is well protected?

Oh yeah. Although, I almost had a female college student run into my car at the local shopping mall. I nearly p***ed myself.

PM me.....

All I did today was take a drying towel and she looks brand new. I had a guy at Costco tell me today "Good thing you have a garage". I told him I park it in the driveway. He was dumb founded. He said "It looks like you just pulled out of the garage". I told him about opti-coat (I never heard of what you used). He was impressed. But, hey whatever works right?

Holy cow! You may be right. Time to double check. :bonk:

NMMI89 11-08-2012 05:33 PM

Whew! Nope. No condensation. It just rained again. Wiped off the lights forward and aft. No condensation on the inside.

Looks good man. I like this mod but I'm afraid to dish out hundreds for it. How long are you expecting this coating to last? :happy0180:

I used the Nanoskin Shock sealant on my wife's car and it's really good.
It doesn't compare apples to apples with Opti Coat as it will not add thickness to the clear coat.

They both do well, have different protection, and have different longevities. ;)

ScionRacer 11-09-2012 06:05 AM

Definitely worth the money IMO.I have washed my car once a week using a wash&wax soap for the last three months and have sprayed nothing else on the surface. The coating the dealership put on it is still there and they will reapply it every 6mo for 2 years. If you hate waxing but don't mind washing, this is it.

Hippophobia 11-09-2012 09:53 AM

The opti-coat is badass. It sheets water and dirt pretty well. I notice the paint doesn't look very dirty longer than without it. And when I do wash it, I don't have to be as aggressive. Usually just need to spray wash it even.

I wet dry it afterwards with some microfibers and this stuff.

NanoSkin Hydro Express

Adds luster on top of the opti-coat and it's super hydrophobic. Car looks amazing and it makes the pearl look ridiculous.

Hamza7 11-09-2012 10:51 AM

Opti Coat/Guard is the shizz. Glad you guys like it.

djliquidsteele 11-10-2012 10:00 PM

So where do I get the NanoSkin Shield? Autogeek doesn't seem to carry that one.

mike18 11-11-2012 01:44 PM

Well OPT is coming out with a lifetime warranty so may that will answer your question. It just lasts a very long long time, up to 5 years.

Paul_S 11-13-2012 07:26 PM

Optimum is launching a new program . It will offer Opti-Pro from authorized installers . Opti-Pro will carry a lifetime warranty and a guarantee against paint failure or damage up to $1,500.00. Opti-Coat will still be offered to the consumer for DIY installs.

I wash my own car and I have been washing long enough to where I don't experience swirls. Its not hard if you take the time to wash it right.First,I only use armor all wash and wax soap.

I use the 2 bucket system with cotton wash towel and dry.Straight washing, in back and forth motion the length of the panels, flipping the towel around on every pass

Then i rinse the towel in clean bucket of water and run it through the soap bucket and repeat.

I use a 16x27 cotton towel to dry and keep wringing it out like a shammy using straight wipes from panel to panel

GoFast908Z 11-19-2012 07:35 PM

I thought you were saying the dealer was washing it weekly. My mistake.

nab 11-25-2012 10:20 PM

Bought my FR-S a few weeks ago and I decided to give James a try. Got it opti-coated yesterday and the car looks great. He took his time, explained the processes and is just a super cool guy to hang out with for the day. Way better than giving your car to some stranger and potentially getting a nasty surprised when they finish.

Maybe I misunderstand you here: They reapply it every 6months? If they truly applied Optimums Opti guard or coat, you don't need reapplication! This stuff last for YEARS on its own.

Did I mis read or interpret you statement? Or "opti guard TYPE" service meaning they sold you something else like.........Perma plate?

If that is the case I understand. Basically they are re waxing your car every 6 months. Realize they will wash it before they rewax it with that stuff........meaning they will likely marr the finish.

Cheers,
GREG

Yruyur 12-04-2012 06:24 PM

Most likely the Parma plate stuff. The opti guard is basically a thick coat of permanent plastic which is much better than that dealer applied stuff that washes off.

Is there a way of knowing if you got the opti coating on it?
after getting my frs I was recommended to get a "paint and fabric protection" plan on it so I made an appointment to get it done
I don't remember if that's what they were talking about
It looks really good though after I wash it
Sucks having a raven though it gets dirty fast

Yruyur 12-06-2012 03:23 AM

If you have to get it put back on every few months then no. Also from what I have read is that opti coat and opts guard are the same thing made by the same manufacturer. One is designed for slower set time for the public to deal with installing while the other sets up faster and is for more experienced techs. I posted something here a while back with a link to a good article about it.

If the paint is prepped properly Optiguard shouldn't come off. Ever. The only way to remove it is through abrasion ( polishing ). And yes, OG can be polished at least once or twice with a FINISHING PAD AND POLISH to remove FAINT swirls. If you are just using a touchless carwash, it'll never come off.

After washing, the water sheets off and beads. That's been my experience. Takes me about an hour and a half to two hours to detail my car. wash, dry the hit it with detail spray.

While is might be thought they are the same thing because they do the same things is not correct. Opti guard has a higher concentration of solids in the solution.

My brother and I just had our vehicles opticoated by James (both FR-S), from the recomendation of @NMMI89. I can honestly say I am 100% satisfied with his work. He drove down to my brother's house, and spent an entire day doing paint correction and opticoat.

I highly recommend James. He's a great guy, takes the time to chat with you, explains the whole process, and even sent me a list of products he recommends after the opticoat has been completed (for future washes).

My brother and I backed out of another opticoat installer in the San Diego area, after this detailer seemed to change the pricing on us at the last minute. I'm sure this other detailer does good work, but it's just bad practice to spring new fees onto a customer the day before we were scheduled to arrive.

Anyway, I'm glad this happened...because it gave us a chance to work with James. James will be getting all my future business.

I was frustrated by the lack of opticoat installers in Southern California (with good references), so I was glad the OP posted this!

How much does it run?

Unfortunately, every market/city is different. I've seen some as low as $3-400, and some over $700. In SoCal, it seems to be around $500. That includes paint correction (required).

Edit: I should also mention, that the more correction is needed in the paint...the more costly it'll be. This is why it's best to get it done ASAP, before your paint gets too bad. Mine (only 2 months old) had major swirls from the dealer washing it. I specifically told them not to, but they always seem to do it anyway. Having a dark colored car like mine, doesn't help!
