I haven't heard about this app... is it like a butt dyno? It must plug into the OBD port or something?

I remember old Washougal River Road! Used that once in a while to get around traffic and always loved it.

Torque Pro is an android app that you can use with an OBD2 dongle to get real time information while driving. It also uses your phones GPS. It'll tell you speed, rpm, coolant temps, vacuum, etc. It's got a setting where it will log 0-60, 1/4 mile, and other performance aspects too. It'll also read trouble codes.

Very neat app for ~$6.50. You can pick up a bluetooth dongle for $17 shipped on amazon, that's what I did. Here's the link: [ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0090ZJPMK/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00"]V1.5 Super Mini ELM327 Bluetooth OBD2 OBD-II CAN-BUS Diagnostic Scanner Tool[/ame] - you just plug it in, pair it with your phone and open Torque.

is that video from your nexus 7?

DarrenDriven 11-06-2012 02:31 PM

Oh, I just spent a few minutes on the iTunes store trying to find the app... then I saw it is for Android. Doh.

Likely from his Droid, the N7 doesn't have a backwards facing camera.

Chen 11-06-2012 03:19 PM

I feel like my car would get broken into.

Freeman 11-06-2012 03:32 PM

Dang, now I gotta buy and Android thing.

deucethemoose 11-06-2012 04:24 PM

I use an old Android cell phone for my Torque stuff. Old Galaxy S with torque and a bluetooth OBDII adapter. Haven't tried it on the FRS though.

danthedirt 11-06-2012 04:31 PM

for iOS you can use Dashcommand with a Wifi OBD adaptor...

Lol I forgot about that... I knew something was weird about that :slap:

So after seeing the above questions, I decided to take a few photos showing how I hooked this thing up. I purchased the mini OBD II off of Ebay a few days ago for $19.00. It works flawlessly with no issues, the higher quality ones run between $100-150.00 which was a no go for me. The only significant difference I anticipate is the information refresh rate. I initial went to purchase a samsung galaxy player, but notice that some random window mount I purchase back in the summer might be able to handle a 7" tablet. So on blind luck I purchased a Samsung Galaxy Note 7. Photos below:

Correct. $199 @ Best Buy

Surok 11-07-2012 09:15 PM

so do we know what the smallest working OBD-II bluetooth adapter is?

Smallest one I've found: ([ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0090ZJPMK/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00"]V1.5 Super Mini ELM327 Bluetooth OBD2 OBD-II CAN-BUS Diagnostic Scanner Tool[/ame])

Totally out of the way when installed, it's working great for me.

Thatruth2001 11-07-2012 09:21 PM

Similar to the one I purchased. The only difference is mine came in black.

Why not just run Torque from your phone, why buy a separate phone just to run the application? Any problems with Bluetooth connecting to your Infotainment system and ODB2 device simultaneously?

Because then you don't have to pull it out of your pocket, turn on bluetooth and GPS, and stick it in the mount. This way he always has a dedicated device running it.

But I just leave my bluetooth and GPS on all the time so it connects itself as soon as I start driving. No battery problems and even if I did have some I'd just plug in the USB charger since our cars have a USB port built in. Basically, if thats the only reason for buying an additional $200 device I'll just stick to using my current Android Phone.

Lets be clear, @deucethemoose said he uses an old android phone, @Thatruth2001 uses a Galaxy Tablet not phone.

I personally use my phone, but I switch on and off bluetooth and GPS so I don't have to plug it in. Will be buying NFC stickers soon so the phone will switch itself.

JesseE 11-08-2012 02:48 PM

Ordered the bluetooth elm unit, and bought the torque app, see how decent the refresh rate is... ill spring for a 150-250$ one if its pretty pathetic...

He likely uses the tablet because, 1) he has a tablet available, and 2) it is easier to read .

I rock an old phone because it is cheap and operates the same. I don't necessarily care about looking at realtime data at all times - I use it for data logging in the Torque app.

Thatruth2001 11-09-2012 09:34 AM

I initially wanted to use my phone, but it become a pain to manage the battery life running the bluetooth and GPS most of the time. I will usually get 6 to 7 hours with the tablet. Also, I decided to download a full standalone Navigation app (no cell connection required like google maps). So in my car, I use the tablet to run torque / navigation and my phone for calls and satellite radio through the head unit. From my limited attempts the head unit will only recognize one device at a time via bluetooth.

slizoth 11-19-2012 03:08 PM

Interesting stuff, I will be taking the approach of walk into my car and phone automatically connects and does everything at least until I can figure out how to turn off the safety features of the head unit (stuff is inaccessible unless the car is stopped).

raiden8383 11-20-2012 01:05 PM

I use my cellphone for Torque app. I don't have battery problem because I charge my cellphone through USB port from stock stereo. Also I play my music via cellphone and AUX.

JonnyRocket 11-20-2012 05:57 PM

I use my phone over bluetooth for Torque. Since I keep my phone pretty well charged at home/work, I don't plug it into the car unless I'm on a roadtrip. Nice thing about using the phone (G'Nex) is it will connect to the stereo and OBD2 dongle simultaneously.

slizoth 11-21-2012 11:53 AM

Nice, does the OBD2 dongle have a battery unit of its own or does it charge off the cable you plug it into?
