Salted roads. FR-S up for season.

They layed the first of many layers of salt today. And with that the FR-S goes in the garage ready for mods.

gily25 11-06-2012 10:31 AM

What helped you make the decision? You had parts ready to be installed?

I was wondering about this myself (when to take it off the road), we're expecting salty roads tomorrow...

ForcedFab_Jon 11-06-2012 10:54 AM

I would garage it too. I would rather drive around in a 500$ Honda civic all winter then let the salt even have a day to attack a new car that's pretty much meant to be a summer sports coupe.

Tt3Sheppard 11-06-2012 11:21 AM

Sigh I hate salt. I'm hoping the FRS will only have to drive through it for 1 year. Hoping to have a winter beater and garage for next year.

Turbowned 11-06-2012 11:23 AM

Agreed. Not that I think the FR-S wouldn't be capable of bombing around in the snow with a good set of snow tires, I just wouldn't want it getting eaten by all the salt. A cheap beater is a much better idea. I stopped driving my MR2 in the winter after I installed coilovers, big brakes, and anything else I didn't want getting ruined by all the salt/sand/slush. I'm gonna undercoat the bejeezus out of my BMW and drive that thing instead.

danthemann5 11-06-2012 11:25 AM

Mine got an oil change, a bath, and a full tank on Sunday and is now laid up for the winter. It'll come out after the first big thunderstorm in April washes all the salt off the roads. Now I just have to figure out what to do to stay entertained for the next 5 months.

whtchocla7e 11-06-2012 11:29 AM

I'm looking forward to an exciting winter driving season. :laughabove:

DarkSunrise 11-06-2012 11:30 AM

I'm also thinking about whether to keep my FR-S off the road during the winter. I'll probably end up driving it, except on days when it snows. :brokenheart:

Come early spring, I'll wash out the underside and show it some love.

_hollywood 11-06-2012 12:03 PM

Light snow here today, i dont think they will start salting just yet, i rented a storage unit for this reason alone, the salt really does a number on cars so mine will be put away for the winter, its just too damn new to be put thru that hell, lol

Rayme 11-06-2012 12:05 PM

Even going through winter and salt, it's going to take a good 7 years for anything to start rusting. People are paranoid haha :)
I'll probably won't own it that long so I don't give crap lol

NedVargar 11-06-2012 12:36 PM

My suburb stopped using salt. They use sand everywhere instead. The big city still uses it though.

Weather's been weird though. 2 years ago we get over a foot of snow and last season not a single flake! Who knows what this year brings.

You can't beat the sand either, it just sand blasts everything!

grodenglaive 11-06-2012 01:58 PM

Unfortunately I don't have room in the driveway for another car, so the FR-S is undercoated and hoping for the best. I'm looking forward to the snow to test out the new blizzak ws70's though.:)

Gixxersixxerman 11-06-2012 02:02 PM

Luckily I live in so cal... Don't have that problem... But I think even if I lived up north like when I lived in Illinois... I still would have to drive it... I hate just parking my bike when it drops in the 30's... I can't imagine parking my ride for 5 months a year... I feel for you guys...

eindio 11-06-2012 02:12 PM

It's still in the 90's here but next month when it cools off I might not drive the frs as much and put the top down in the z28

Books 11-06-2012 02:39 PM

I'm worried about salt, but not enough to garage it. It's my daily and this winter is going to be awesome

ashtray 11-06-2012 06:57 PM

If you plan to park it for a while, add a fuel stabilizer at minimum. Maybe put it on jack stands to avoid flat spotting tires or frozen parking brakes. Battery tender?

There's probably a list somewhere online of how to store a car for 5 months.

Dark 11-06-2012 07:02 PM

I would rubberized-coat paint the entire under body parts to prevent it from corrosion. Sometimes, you can't avoid taking the car for a ride.

Pbrown 11-06-2012 07:05 PM

Krowned today

At 46. I don't have many winters left compared to some. With the Krown and sick days for when it snows I should be fine. I just can't bring myself to drive a POS for 5 months all the while staring at the car daily. That's like banging Rosie O'donell while Sofia Vegara is calling out for you but you can't have her. Sorry about your loss of lunch guys.

CircuitJerk 11-06-2012 09:24 PM

Mine get's garaged. In the past however, when I have no choice, I've used a product called LPS 3 http://www.lpslabs.com/product_pg/co...n_pg/LPS3.html

I would cover all the parts underneath that I think would start to oxidize quick and even strategically under the hood. Then, in the summer, I would power wash it off. and wipe the visible areas down. I also had a lift at my disposal so that helped.

Love this stuff.

dem00n 11-06-2012 09:43 PM

I'm surprised by how many people are going to garage the car. Funny how some people call this a "summer car", what??
Its even more funny that some guys going to garage the car are the same guys who bitch and moan about how majority of these cars will rarely be on a track. :D

Easier to make time to work on it when not driving. nothing purchased yet but, wheels, tires, suspension, brake line lock kit, braided stainless hoses. all in the works for the winter.

mine too, but my wife works close to me and is going to drop me off during the winter till I find a beater.

will be inside, wheels off, on stands, full tank of ethanol free with stabilizer. as stated above I have some stuff to do, so being immobile for a couple months won't be too bad on me.

i was thinking of doing underbody seal the car, what you guys think?

Do it. I would do the same if I'm in a heavy snow area.

Agreed. If I'm stuck shelling out monthly payments for this thing, I'm sure as hell gonna enjoy it as much as possible, and snow, sleet, salt won't bother me.

touchless wash with undercarriage once a week, and you are golden!
don't give the corrosion a chance to start!

if ya don't wash it regular throughout the winter,it'll be chewed up in probably less than 3 years, especially if your municipality uses the "liquid" de-icer
on the roads! that sh*t is brutal on metal, luckily most cities can't use it,because it's cost prohibitive.

That's completely useless. Cars rust from the inside out anyway.

Just but a 12$ can of rust check and spray that crap all over the suspension component and small areas under like the hangers, etc…. This will preserve the fasters and slow down surface rust.

You don't need to wash hit every week, specially if it's under the freezing temperature. You're just adding water to salt and there's no weather for the water to evaporate. It's not going to help that much at all.

MVJ1975 11-07-2012 09:44 AM

Since I don't feel like walking to work, I'll be putting winter tires on and driving the FR-S.

danthemann5 11-07-2012 10:11 AM

I originally planned to put winter tires on and drive it year round, but the salt and corrosion potential really scared me away from that. I really like this car, and I plant to keep it for as long as it stays together. If keeping it garaged during the bad months makes it last longer, I'm all for it. My goal is to move to a place that doesn't get snow in 5-10 years anyway.

I don't consider the FR-S a summer car. I consider it a spring-summer-fall-but-not-winter car.

I did too but I forked over 1400 for a compact pickup to bomb around in from Dec to Apr.

The salt and corrosion did not scare me away,it was the potential of commuting in 6-12 inches of snow for a few months.Been there, done that, not worth it IMO.I live in a fairly large urban area that does not see plow trucks early enough.

whtchocla7e 11-07-2012 07:04 PM

First snow in CT today. I still have my stock Michellin's on while I'm deciding what to replace them with.

Easy drive and I was able keep my cool when some minivan racer pulled up on my ass not long before I had to take a right turn off a busy road to my house (50mph to 5mph in good conditions).

I absolutely despise assholes who do not keep their distance... One day they'll all regret it.

Dezoris 11-07-2012 07:51 PM

The car is a total econo-box in stock form, it's one of those cars meant to be driven. I am surprised so many people are so phobic of winter in it. Now if you have 10k worth of crap installed on it I get you want to protect your investment.

This. Wash it relatively soon after driving on salt roads. Being wet is better than being salty. The heat from the car being driven plus air rushing under will dry most of the water anyway even in winter weather. I managed to keep my 95 240sx's body rust free (not an easy task believe me) after 10 winters and countless treks in the salt covered NJ roads.

The only rusty things on the car were the aftermarket suspension stuff. figures...

Left mine in the garage (finally) and played in the Jeep, was wondering if one of the CT members would comment. Other than the jerk glad to hear it handled well. Any advice on the snow driving (other than the generic advice)?

getting into "hiding" places, and starting to do it's thing! you are correct in that the freezing weather helps,BUT it just SLOWS the process down,DOESN'T stop it,so why take a chance? for 20 bucks a month,it's worth it to me! flush it out as often as possible! ,just make sure you use a facility that uses clean water! some of these places just recycle, and the water "retains" impurities,
AND salt too!..just sayin'

this is correct! as soon as it's exposed, however i do it once a week, and have done it for along time this way,and never had an issue with rust! just sayin'

Someone say snow? ;)

Nevermore 11-08-2012 01:45 PM

The only thing that concerns me are the sideview mirrors frosting up/freezing over. My 626 had heated mirrors, which was a pretty nice feature, considering. I'm actually surprised the FR-S got something like auto up/down windows, but not heated mirrors, espcially given how crucial the mirrors in this car are with the blind spots. They sit at an angle that makes it difficult to use a regular sized ice scrapper, so I was wondering if it would hurt them if I just kept a can of that deicing spray in the car and just gave them a quick spray off before I leave for work in the morning?
