Shoud I go with the chrome/polished fender trim?

Hey guys, I'm about to place an order for the car... in literally like 2 hours. I'm going with dark grey metallic. Should I go for the chrome/polished fender trim? Can't decide from looking at the pictures and have never seen this option in person. What would you recommend?

that_one_guy 11-05-2012 06:48 PM

no! I think it looks horrible, but even if you like the look, it's only a sticker so you can probably get it cheaper from a shop that does full body wraps.

Norkoastal 11-05-2012 06:56 PM

I would avoid... This color doesnt mesh all that great with chrome accents imho.

MrBodyMassage 11-05-2012 07:00 PM

I honestly love it. It reminds me very much of Aston Martin fender vents. They have a polished metal piece in the middle. But whatever your decision, go ahead and order without it. You can get it after the fact for ~$80, which is less than the dealer will charge since they charge labor to install it. To install you just peel and stick. Seriously. So take your time deciding, but if you like it order it after the fact.

chanomatik 11-05-2012 07:09 PM

It depends. The headlights and tail lights already have chrome in them. Dark Gray has metallic flakes. I like it on my Crystal Black Silica, but that's because it breaks up the look a bit on the sides. It looks terrible on Galaxy Blue and Red, in my opinion.

Because it comes right off, I say go for it and challenge yourself to enjoy it for at least 4 weeks.

Kimsey47 11-05-2012 07:09 PM

I didn't get it because it would have been the only chrome... If there was more then yeah, but without any other chrome it looks out of place.

clzzical 11-05-2012 07:17 PM

I think the chrome fender trim looks better on the dark colored cars than it does on the lighter colors like white and silver.

Much more noticeable, which is the whole point.

You'd better hurry! This thread just started

Not taking orders for anymore?
Anyone else heard this from the dealers? I was told by two dealers that they are not taking anymore orders and that even if they could you can not pick the color. You can only get what is already in the pipeline. The guy I was working with even said he wants a white one and works for Subaru and could not order one. The $500 down only saves your price.

Thanks for all the input. BTW, I ended up going with the chrome trim.

The dealer took the order without a problem. However, another dealer I talked to did say I may have to wait until May for delivery.

Subie 11-05-2012 09:35 PM

The chrome fender trim looks great IMO; the body colored trim doesn't look like it really belongs. I say go for it.

Pete156 11-05-2012 11:11 PM

I ordered the chrome fender trim for my SWP. Think it's a classy touch.

86BRZ 11-05-2012 11:15 PM

I bought my trim afterwards and stick them on. I have the same "looks good" question before but not any more after look around. If you check out all other car manufacturers and their models has this similar fender design, most of them come with chrome. From BMW to KIA, including a Chevy dont know what model little car i spot this morning, all chrome trim. The moment I stick that on I immediate noticed the car is "completed", my only question is why Subaru leave that out? To save $20 cost?

+1

The chrome trim is a nice subtle accent on pretty much any paint color, especially CBS and DGM.

PMok 11-05-2012 11:55 PM

Not everyone likes chrome; you can see the divergence of opinions right here in this thread. So I guess Subaru gives you the option of adding it but doesn't force you to take it. Maybe they expect the aftermarket would offer a lot of alternatives and didn't want to spend too much on an area that they knew many would replace? Wonder if they offered a black or CF piece instead, how many people would be all over that instead.

Take a look at this link, where I gathered pics of what I thought were some of the most beautiful car designs - most of them are GT or sports cars. And you'll see that most, if not all of them feature subtle touches of chrome or polished metal - classy and timeless cars like the Aston Martin Vantage, BMW 507, Alfa Romeo 8C, Ferrari 250 GT. I think the fender piece for the BRZ is subtle and fitting for this car.

I have a DGM, I ordered one without the fender chrome. The one I found at a local dealer was exactly what I ordered, but had a "popular package" that included the trim.

Now that it has been on there a while, I quite like it. And like others said, it breaks up the sides a bit. If you get a car with it, you can always plastidip or paint them. Its not a deal breaker either way.

dori. 11-06-2012 09:51 PM

it should look fine on the darker colors. outside of crystal black and dark gray it looks like shit

no matter what though, I personally dislike chrome and wouldn't put it on my car.

Wes 11-06-2012 10:27 PM

NO. eww on chrome

kludger 11-06-2012 10:38 PM

I like it on LR.

It came on my car and I planned to remove it, but when I saw it in person, it actually looks good to me on this color, at least for now... easy to remove it later if I change my mind.

I like the chrome accent, but I was going to suggest saving $60 over those silly plastic things from Subaru and getting some Alsa Ghost Chrome metallic paint, masking off the vents and "chroming" it yourself. Ghost Chrome is less "blingy" and has the smallest particle makeup of any metallic paint out there, making it look and feel like real metal. You could also use it on the cheap silver interior plastics if you wanted to make those look like real metal, too! They also offer a "stretch chrome" film that would do the trick for short money, too. Definitely worth checking out:

(I'm in no way affiliated with these guys, just thoroughly impressed with their products)

To give those of us who think it looks horrible the chance to avoid it.

bdbx18 12-10-2012 11:33 AM

I didn't want it before I saw it in person. It's like accessorizing a women's night gown. Without the subtle chrome pieces, it would just look plain.

The FRS's tiny silver logo looks so lacking compared to the BRZ's fender chrome design.

The chrome fuel cover one?, eh, jury is still for me on that one. I'll leave mine there if anything but to keep the cover clean.

In my opinion, the chrome fender trim is a perfect subtle touch, especially on CBS. Actually, it looks good on any color.

Get it if you like it, after all its your car. Whats a few more dollars when your spending this much.

glorydays 12-11-2012 03:53 PM

We have th same color umbie and I think it looks ok but not enough to go spend money on a chrome accessory... sometimes I want to paint mine black.

BRZnut 12-11-2012 10:44 PM

It would be nice if they had it in a nickel color. It would match the wheels. The bright chrome is just too bright!

Personally, I think the trim goes well with the wheels even if the wheels aren't bright chrome. Something about chrome accents on a black car just looks great to me. At the end of the day, though, you can't lose. Body color or chrome fender trim is a minor detail on a beautiful car.

glorydays 12-12-2012 12:39 PM

Indeed

swift996 12-12-2012 01:30 PM

I didn't like the idea but the only black manual limited I could get my hands on had the trim. It has grown on me. I remember thinking it would be the first thing I pulled off. It doesn't bother me any more. I wish it was more a brushed aluminum look. Under direct sunlight it shines like chrome (which I'm not a fan of).

Dorb 12-12-2012 01:57 PM

Don't forget the most important thing - Chrome makes it faster too!
