iPad mini - now a possible replacement for the stereo.

At 7.9 inches, the iPad mini may just fit in that oversized hole in the dash. Can't wait to see what some of you come up with between now and when I get my car.

I've been waiting for someone to make an in dash mount for the iphone.

Now with the ipad mini, I think this would be great.

It's weird - but it works if you hit refresh again.

TheSt|G 11-02-2012 06:59 PM

Been thinking of this for a bit.

denkigrve 11-02-2012 09:32 PM

Nice.

It's very cool but what if you want an external video in source like a reverse camera or something?

I'm short and struggle to see well out of my 86 so I fitted front and rear cameras into my Pioneer head unit. Bitch of a job but came it out well

I dont get it, you would think that car companies would get it by now. Not only it will be cheaper but more efficient with preinstalled ipad in a vehicle. Interface is so much more advanced in apple than any other vehicle smart navigation screen period.

Turbowned 11-03-2012 03:24 PM

It would be totally bitchin' to be able to get in your car, plug your iPad in, and control every function with it. Charge the device, take incoming calls, send SMS messages by voice, adjust the climate control, all with minimal distraction! It would clean up the center console and eliminate a whole lot of buttons, that's for sure. Manufacturers could charge whatever they charge for their normal navigation package-equipped cars and I bet you people would pay it!

There's a company called Savant that installed an iPad in the dash of a Lexus IS300 and made it control the HVAC as well as stereo and whatever else. It's totally possible, just hafta wait for the technology to become cheaper.

Then again it would be uncool if you broke it and couldn't do anything with your car, but that's another story.

WRXGuy1 11-03-2012 05:35 PM

People have done it with the Nexus 7 too, which is even cheaper at $199. The downside is you really can't control any of the audio pieces except for the volume, as it's all done by the head unit. Another con is the heat and direct sunlight, tablets aren't rated for the heat that cars see in the summer, especially in the south. I believe the iPad is rated at 115 degrees when it's not in use.

Sounds pretty great, but there would have to some kind of OS alteration or lock outs while driving, no? Last thing we need on the roads is more temptations for distraction...

Officer: We're you texting, Ma'am?
Idiot Driver: No! I was just playing Angry Birds!

Jaylyons1 02-09-2013 09:41 AM

If I didn't already have a nav unit I would consider it. Maybe when I pick up my next M3.

It's possible to install an ipad in the dash of any car.

Ummm have you looked in to the dimensions of the ipad mini because what i have heard is that it was too wide. I know that the Nexus 7 fits almost perfectly but it isnt as wide and i think it is a tad bit longer.

Ummm, no, not at all. There's nothing "advanced" at all about iOS. In fact, it prides itself on it's simplicity. It's remained the exact same interface since 2007. Even Woz says it's behind. I'd go as far as to say some head unit's *gulp* WinCE interfaces are much better suited or a car.

I've been a huge advocate of mobile os platforms in vehicles for stereos. Unfortunately for camp Apple, it's probably never going to happen on a dedicated unit. Apple's OS isn't open source. And if they decided to enter that market, it would be like 2500$ for a head unit. Besides, just having an icon grid would be lame in a car.

Apple should really open up the integration with their OS. So a head unit manufacturer could do something like what App Radio does with my Android phone. A full mirror of the guest device on the screen and controlled by the screen. Open the glove box, hook up the ipad, close the glove box and be on your way...Oh, and GPS (that works) would be something nice to have in a car too... ;)

You could always do Android with Espier Launcher. It will look and feel JUST like iOS.

Yea the ipad mini is a bit more wider & taller but I'm planing on cutting & fiber grassing the OEM bezel to fit the wider tablet I just bought the mini today ill be posting on my journal.

Looks like jailbroken iPhones work quite well with AppRadio2.

This looks like a gimmick that will be fun the first few weeks around and then the idea gets tossed in the big because it's really not practical. That being said, impress me ;)

Ish, you still need to go to cydia, download extensions, then select which apps you want to share. Even then you can't just throw the phone in the glove box and do the interfacing entirely from the AR2.
