Subaru BRZ STI Spied Testing on Nurburgring!

A Japanese test group has just been spotted at the Nurburgring driving what appears to be a prototype for the Subaru BRZ STI. This Subaru BRZ was being driven by some Japanese drivers, and accompanied by a rather large Japanese contingent off-track.

The car wears most of the BRZ STI parts previewed by Subaru so far - black front splitter and new, lower side-skirts that both wear STI badges. STI badged brakes can also be seen behind new 14-spoke, STI branded wheels. The dual exhaust tips look to be significantly fatter than the standard models, filling the slots in the rear valance. Finally, a large fixed rear wing is bolted onto the rear deck, though it's slightly different in design than the one seen on the BRZ STI Concept.

What other performance upgrades this model boasts is not yet known, though if it had any sort of turbocharging (rumors), it would possibly have Subaru's trademark functional hood air scoop in some form.

Photos are posted below.

What are they gonna call it? Ts or STi? Kinda cool that me and lanez have more STi bits than STi does.

You can tell that it had the Limited wing on it and they put little white stickers over the holes.

So it's got:
Lip
Sides
Wing
Brakes
Rims

We need an under hood shot.

Razz 10-31-2012 01:07 PM

New intake manifold to remove the dip in power.
New air intake and exhaust.

That is all.

Now move on.
Go about you business.
Nothing to see hear.

RaceR 10-31-2012 01:08 PM

BRZ STI! Yay!! :)

Spartan65 10-31-2012 01:09 PM

That wing is close to what I want, outer mounted, maybe not as high. About ten inches high.

Jayde 10-31-2012 01:09 PM

Those wheels.... WTB in black.

Infernal 10-31-2012 01:11 PM

the wheels look they need spacers or something imo - regardless... this seems nice, hopefully it does have FI - though i doubt it.

the hood scoops are normally also only for TMIC's i cant see an obvious FMIC/SMIC in the pics though

For them to go all the way to Nurburgring tells me they are testing the aero parts with that wing, brakes, suspension, and/or internal N/A engine mods. And/or prepping for some motorsport competition like VLN. That looks like a stock exhaust with factory JDM tips.

BioRage 10-31-2012 01:18 PM

Sweet, that's good news.

itisthumper 10-31-2012 01:24 PM

This looks different from the other BRZ STI prototypes

look at the ride height, its def got some sort of suspension upgrade

SubarooMike 10-31-2012 01:38 PM

Though its just cosmetic, I hope they do away with the black brake calipers. I truly miss the gold on the WRX Sti's

OrbitalEllipses 10-31-2012 01:39 PM

Beyer's got the right idea. Still looks more like a BRZ tuned by STI (tS) than anything else.

Without interior or underhood shots we're all just speculating on what else it has. Those do look like JDM exhaust tips though.

As far as wheels: That's what happens when you add width but stay at +48 offset...Subaru keeps their offsets high.

Guff 10-31-2012 01:40 PM

9K REDLINE OR BUST!

Hanakuso 10-31-2012 01:42 PM

New seats as well

Guff 10-31-2012 01:43 PM

Also, no STi exhaust? I thought that was already developed...

Now this is worth looking into. The WRX/STI have never come with branded exhausts (HERE anyway)...but I'd imagine that the JDM WRX tS might have, since it was just a parts catalog car.

And it looks lower than the STI springs would make it.

I agree that there is likely no FI going on in there, beyond that everything is speculation, I don't think there is much to gain from these photos so far.

you can see in this pic the standard radiator, no inter cooler, unless they want to later put that on and add a hood scoop

Agreed. The springs drop it 15mm. If it's anything else, maybe Bilsteins?

yayforaddison 10-31-2012 02:03 PM

Still looks N/A. No scoop, and by the looks of it, I cant see any hints of an intercooler in the grill.

I do hope for a higher redline as well Guff!!!!

They have always said any STi version would be faster than the standard one, so I'm guessing some NA tuning maybe bore and stroke.

Guff 10-31-2012 02:19 PM

Didn't Karamatsu say that stronger valve springs is all they needed to safely redline at 9k or something? Or am I mistaken?

That would be something...

illmatic 10-31-2012 02:21 PM

I bet this will be a japan only Ts version, just like the new Legacy on 11/13.

Yeah pretty much... that was Subaru chief engineer Masuda in an interview with Top Gear magazine I think.

Highly doubt it'll come to NA.

If so it be altered =\

Eurasianman 10-31-2012 02:32 PM

n00b question: I take it for current BRZ owners, if we wanted the increase in performance, we could just buy the STI parts and get the tune and be good to go? :iono:

CBR600RR 10-31-2012 02:37 PM

I spy - no intercooler

big brakes are present though

NemesisPrime909 10-31-2012 02:39 PM

I'm expecting new exhaust, higher reving engine, better tires, the aero pictured, and the price tag of 35-37k

That is, of course if it comes here

mechaghost 10-31-2012 02:47 PM

dat Wing

truenosan 10-31-2012 02:50 PM

Do I spy 5x114.3 hubs?

clzzical 10-31-2012 02:52 PM

Awesome that the car is SWP! Gives me a better idea of how the STI bits look without only relying on my imagination.

Spd229 10-31-2012 02:57 PM

I like the look of that wing from the angled shots, while a bit tall it looks to fit the overall look of the car to me.

Definitely hoping they opened up the redline a bit and fixed the torque dip, that'd be sick.

You can also see the driver smiling. :w00t:

Turbowned 10-31-2012 03:20 PM

Nothing much to see here, just a GT wing and some STi bits that're already available.

I think you may be right about the need for more displacement.

Based on some earlier comments I heard out of Subaru, their stated goal was 250 hp normally aspirated. Higher lift/duration cams, stronger valve springs, and an 8500 rpm redline (and maybe revised intake manifold, tb, and exhaust) might be enough for 230-240 hp, but I can't see you getting too much more power out of a 2.0L production engine that lacks variable valve lift.

My guess is that Subaru will need to bump displacement to 2.2L to hit 250 hp NA.

jesperswe 10-31-2012 03:31 PM

No visiblie IC and no hood scoop, it aint no turbo in the engine :(
Maybe there are other mods under the hood. Why would there else be bigger brakes if no more power is added? :D

And i have a hard time seeing that rearwing being streetlegal, atleast here in Sweden.
