Press Release:

“SUBARU BRZ CONCEPT - STI -” to Make World Premiere at Los Angeles Auto Show

Tokyo, November 1, 2011 - Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI), the maker of Subaru automobiles, today announced that the world premiere of the “SUBARU BRZ CONCEPT - STI -” will take place at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November 2011 (Press day: November 16 and 17; Open to the public from November 18 through 27 in the United States).

The “SUBARU BRZ CONCEPT - STI -” is a concept car based on the “SUBARU BRZ”, an all-new rear-wheel drive (RWD) compact sports car developed from an ongoing joint-project between Subaru and Toyota Motor Corporation. Built with Subaru’s core technology of the Horizontally-Opposed Boxer engine, this model has a low center of gravity that realizes a “Pure Handling Delight” driving experience. Combined with motifs of Subaru’s iconic performance brand “STI”, the concept car embodies an ultimate handling performance.
"You can imagine how Subaru must have been feeling as partner Toyota hogged the headlines with its FT-86. But at long last, someone at Subaru has seen sense and decided to issue an official picture of the new BRZ coupe.

This is the Subaru BRZ Concept STi – a rather obviously production-ready glimpse of the new rear-wheel drive coupe, co-developed between Subaru parent Fuji Heavy Industries and Toyota.

Subaru BRZ Concept STi: the lowdown

This coupe will be shown at the 2011 Los Angeles auto show on 16 November 2011 and just one photo has been issued so far.

There's precious little in the way of technical information, either. They're just trotting out the usual line about it being powered by Subaru's horizontally opposed boxer engine, which we've known since day one.

Extra information we've already gleaned from our recent drive in the Toyota FT-86 include the fact that the boxer engine is likely to be a 2.0-litre four-cylinder boxer, delivering around 200bhp/170lb ft in regular guise. The direct-injection Toyota emits around 160g/km for trim tax bills.

But the STi monicker of this concept car is a clear indication that go-faster versions are planned. Witness the enormous rear wing.

Any other details on the Subaru BRZ?

That boxer engine will allow a very low centre of gravity, promises Subaru, so we are told to expect edgy handling. CAR's resident oversteer-fan, deputy editor Ben Barry, reported that the rear-wheel drive FT-86 test hack he drove was very sideways – but in quite a different way from rally-proven four-wheel drive Subarus of yore.

The Subaru BRZ is likely to be a niche car in the UK. Torrid exchange rates will make this one pricey sports coupe, and the UK importer expects sales of only around 500 a year.

We reckon on this first evidence, they might be able to nudge that volume up a notch or too. If they can get the price right."

Looks amazing to me! Reminds me of the old Z4 coupe. Unfortunately it won't, actually can't, look like that, as the Subaru and Toyota share the same metal. I can hope for red tail lights for the production Subaru though.

DC87 11-01-2011 10:16 AM

Yeah well this is still just a concept because its been shown in LA in a couple of weeks, but its an official BRZ image!!

Jordo! 11-01-2011 10:18 AM

If it has more power or torque than the Toyoter, I'll take it.

NumbersGuy 11-01-2011 10:20 AM

That is awesome! I Love It!

MrVito 11-01-2011 10:23 AM

They just need to take my damn money already

Nambo 11-01-2011 10:36 AM

Looks nice...for a concept, bring out the real deal!

keiri 11-01-2011 10:40 AM

Not really liking the rear diffuser as much on this concept but the quadpipes are a nice touch. Can't wait to see what the front looks like...and the final model in Tokyo.

fernan2 11-01-2011 10:41 AM

My money is yours, TAKE IT NOW!!!

Spaceywilly 11-01-2011 10:46 AM

Why do only the British magazines/websites get these stories?

zigzagz94 11-01-2011 10:48 AM

I like the BRZ tailights better

Correct, that won't be the production car.

I don't understand why it couldn't look like this?

They have consistently said the Subie and Scion would have different rear and front end treatments.:iono:

jonnois 11-01-2011 11:34 AM

i do like the tail lights on this version

dominican 11-01-2011 11:34 AM

Yea but a different bumper/grill mold in plastic is alot different than a different door.

I like it but... what is up with the huge wing going on there? Can't they do something a little less bomber like? I dunno I guess I'm just not into the whole car/plane hybrid look

mike2100 11-01-2011 11:40 AM

Autoblog says it will have upgraded suspension, Brembo brakes, and 18" wheels.

I do too. After looking at the Toyota stuff a little more, assuming those Toyota taillights are split in two pieces at the trunk line then these may be possible, although they'd require a different trunk which we haven't been led to believe will be the case yet..

I'd love to see the final Subaru design!

Bumpers, not anything with sheet metal like fenders, doors, trunk, etc. For this to happen there would be sheet metal changes.

40flash 11-01-2011 11:54 AM

I susspect the production model will have door handles of some sort.

Snoopyalien24 11-01-2011 11:54 AM

I want those tail lights! NAOW!

skinsfn36 11-01-2011 11:55 AM

Theres no way it will be badged an STi and share the same drivetrain as the FR-S. I think this is the model the auto mags got to drive that said has more power.

I get what you are saying...

it's just that I was never really sold on the whole "exactly the same except badges" claim. I'm hoping on some slight sheetmetal differences like this render.

Well that would increase cost due to the additional stampings/dies that need to be made. I'm guessing they are already trying to keep this as cheap as possible like everyone here wants so I wouldn't bet on it yet..

Now maybe in a few years we'll see something like that, but I wouldn't bet on it for next year.

I'd be happy to be wrong though!

zeggie 11-01-2011 12:02 PM

I like the BRZ rear lights, but i am leaning towars the FRS.

Blitz 11-01-2011 12:04 PM

Hey guys, this a bit off topic in regards to suspension and my apologies if there is a definitive answer. Some articles mention the FT-86 as Double wishbone rear, any word if the BR-Z will be different (i.e Multi-link). Thanks

Dave-ROR 11-01-2011 12:06 PM

It's going to be the same as the FR-S, so the rear will be double wishbone according to the specs that were leaked.

JohnnyR 11-01-2011 12:10 PM

Oh my, that looks much better than expected. If this thing does have a real STI variant with a turbo, this will be the one people want to get.

fred_boosted 11-01-2011 12:11 PM

Nice! Can't wait!

Blitz 11-01-2011 12:12 PM

Thanks Dave

Do Boy 11-01-2011 12:12 PM

Guess this is the one I'm getting lol. Hope they lose that wing thou.

Does say it is a concept. If this was the complete production model, fkn oath ill opt for this variant. This car would have to sell into the 50-60k range if Subaru Aus got their act together and said yes to put the BRZ up their line up.

Will be the first Subaru production sport car here in a while that wont cost an arm an a kidney to insurance due to the naturally aspirated engine option.
