so....what exactly is RICE?
I get it to an extent, but sometimes i don't know the difference. Myself for example. On my whiteout,i plan on doing allot of cosmetic modifications that are cheap before i get into the big things like exhaust.i rebadged to Toyota, have a flossy shift knob, am going to get the interior redone, Opti coat, get spoiler, etc. Then an intake.the hks exhaust is on my list, but it'll have to wait. I want a turbo, but it's too early for me. They are still developing kits and testing them and i don't want to void my warranty just yet since all of the cel problems.. Besides,i don't want to pay 8 grand just to make my car cry yet;)
So would you consider me "rice" or "smart" out something else entirely? |
Everyone has their own take on what a "riced" out vehicle consists of/looks like. IMO I would not consider you "rice" at all. I am doing the same, some smaller, cheaper cosmetic mods until after winter and I have the funds for exhaust, intake, ect, ect.
For instance around where I live, a lot of guys run honda civics (mainly), all 4 being on spare tires/donuts to give their car a more "blacked out" look. to me ... that is rice status. LOL. :bonk:Lambo doors tend to be looked at as "rice", anything gawdy/flashy that really has no impact to performance of the vehicle. JDM decals thrown around the car windows when the guy/girl isn't even running any of those parts and is just looking for attention. (these are just some examples that I see ALOT of around my area, lol) Again, everyone has their own opinion, especially on auto forums, don't let anyones opinion of what they THINK "rice" might be, stop you from modding your car the way you want  |
I love rice.
|
That could be a tough one. It's sort of like asking a group of guys "what is a sports car". If you have 20 guys in the group you will get 20 different answers.
I might be over simplifying but to me rice means: form over function. If something looks different because it is serving a definite purpose, that is one thing. If something looks different and is not accomplishing anything in doing so, to me that's rice. I do support the theory that it's your car to do with what ever you want. Good luck |
Just do things that you appreciate and forget about what the internet thinks

Just watch this movie and it'll answer all your questions.

To me, rice is when a car has plast dip rims, lowering springs, and an exhaust but still has no tune... lol
|
It's very very easy. Something is rice if it attaches with double sided tape. There isn't a single thing that you can install on a car with double sided tape that will make me go "I NEED THIS".

This should be a good thread to follow.

Go to SEMA and you'll find RICE there. The only thing I love to do to a car is a rear lip spoiler, rims and a mild drop. I dislike everything else.

That is one of the ugliest civics ever!!!
|
The Tommy Kaira bumper for the 86/BRZ is the definition of rice.
Anything that's too much or too tacky constitutes as rice, IMO. |

To me rice is all about context. Sure it might be cool to see a flashy loud car in a movie or at a show but thats because the context is that everyone is trying to get your attention. If you see that same car driving around in everyday life you think that person is WAY too desperate for attention. |

Personally I'd say most things I perceive as "rice" are cheap modifications intended to make the car look "fast". large spoilers on FWD cars, fake hood scoops, and such. Colors/mods don't necessarily make a car "riced out," but cheap parts imitating aspects of better cars are usually what I refer to as "rice". Example: crazy painted wheels are gaudy but not rice, whereas a brake caliper cover intended to make the caliper look like a big brake upgrade... now that is rice |
What is rice? A derogitory racist term used by self-centered douchebags to demean other people's cars just because they don't approve of their particular modification style. The term jumped the shark and lost all meaning, however, once I started catching people using it to slander cars that were (unknown to the douche in question) in stock form.
If you don't like a particular car, either keep it to yourself or come up with a more articulate way of expressing why you don't like it. Don't use "rice". |
Cheap functionless bling is generally a pretty good starting point. Anything made in China also a good bet.

nothing derogatory meant, no racial undertone
rice=mods that are not trackworthy |
I view it this way. People who criticize what someone else does with their car are possibly:
1. Jealous that someone else is getting attention 2. Think their own opinions about style are right and everyone else is wrong 3. Bored and should find a new hobby if all they can do for fun is criticize other people for being different. I say don't sweat it. Follow what catches your interest or looks good to you. Whenever I've heard someone criticize something I did, I think to myself: "Why does this upset you so much that I painted my wheels/painted my radio bezel/lowered my car ? ....etc...." I don't understand why people sometimes offer negative opinions about your personal choices. It's not a good way to make friends. All I can guess is that these people have issues that they have trouble dealing with, and they will be difficult to please no matter what you do. And on the other side, people often make friends by having things in common with others. And sometimes the things that bind people together (for lack of anything else) are the people that don't like "stanced" cars, or VW's, or Chevy's, or Ford's, or plaid, or Nirvana, or Nickelback, or whatever else. I try to accept that not everyone likes everything about me (and hope that some people like some things about me, lol). And if I really don't share someone's opinion or enthusiasm for whatever they are into, I'll try to understand where they are coming from, but I don't have to pretend to like the same things they do. I also don't have to tell them their car is ugly, or tell them they are stupid to do XYZ to their car. I'm a fan of, "if I don't have something nice to say, just let it go". Well, that was quite a ramble. Sorry, haha. Just do what you like though, as long as it's still safe to drive on the roads :) There is no right or wrong when it comes things like spoiler or no spoiler, stickers or no stickers, 5 spoke or 6 spoke wheels. |

But seriously it is true. I used to think thongs like colored less for the interior and mambo doors were rice. I'm doing less on my footwells as I have now seen what a clean install looks like. Lambo doors also look sick on an frs as far as I'm concerned. Do what you want and let haters hate. Maybe they don't have the skills or money for the exact part or clean install, let them be happy with what they can do. Have fun enjoying your car, thats why you got it after all. Not for others to tell you why its cool. |

Before I went through all of these 2 pages, I thought *rice* was something like "You raff you ruse".

Your classic Ricer: ridiculous wings (I know this one is stock), vinyls, stickers, chrome badges, headlights, tail lights, disgusting wheels, 8000k+ HID lights (super blue or worse).
http://www.ismellrice.com/wp-content...listcivic2.jpg The opposite, Super Clean: the car is visibly modded but it looks very clean and like the modifications belong. Looks like an upgraded version of factory spec. http://static.cargurus.com/images/si...pic-39624.jpeg |

If anything, I think there's a thing or two we can learn from "ricers". They clearly don't care what people think. And I think that's important, do what u like.
Just don't take it to the extreme lol |

I was basically saying they must not give a crap what people think, if they do those things to their rides. But I can see how what you're saying is true. |

I do need to add that most i've seen in real life do it to impress their buddies, not the general public or the general auto enthusiasts. Thankfully though I've really seen an overall decrease in it in the last couple years, maybe since stuff like F&F is kinda pulling away from it... kinda lol |

you know...for someone in here telling people their opinions aren't valid and such....you have a very distorted view of reality and you are highly opinionated...and wrong... my car doesn't have: 1.) a race...therefore you cannot be racist towards my car...sorry look up race it just doesn't apply to cars. 2.) feelings, so despite the fact that you are wrong (see 1) you can't hurt my car's feelings 3.) this thread, if you missed the title and first post, is a SOLICITATION OF OPINION. with that being said.... Rice is anything meant to make a car look faster that doesn't actually serve that function, all body kits are rice, unless developed with actual CFD/wind tunnel or at the very least engineering, to help extract air from under the car and maximize the tunneling effect under the car to decrease lift. most of the rims you fan boi's buy are rice, if you upgrade rim diameter and it isn't to clear brakes or meet a class spec...it's rice...now you can tell yourself it is faster or handles better...but then you can go home and look at a real racecar and realize real racecars have sidewalls... Spoilers on cars that do not have rear traction demands that exceed factory capability...are rice. (i refused to put a wing on my race car until I was having highspeed traction issues and needed it) decals...are rice outrageous colors on cars...guess what...rice lowering your car (especially on a chassis this developed) with out addressing a need (i want low is a desire not a need) is rice. window tint...as long as it isn't some funky color...serves a purpose and therefore with exceptions i can say...is NOT (always) rice Yes i realize that there are factory cars that i have just labeled as rice (and tuxedo cartman may even realize some of these cars AREN'T asian in origin) Factory cars are not immune to rice, porsche produces some truly LOOK AT ME ugly colors...and everyone puts 19's and 20's on factory cars...some are functional, some are decidedly not. :word: :happy0180: I understand you don't like this post, that's fine, im even less sensitive to insults than my car |
