asked dealer service manager about aftermarket/warranty

So I went and asked the toyota dealer service manager if aftermarket (non TRD) would void warranty......it will. It will void the entire warranty. TRD parts of course will not void it, They are fully covered even if and when you have a malfunction with them. Just FYI. Laterz!

lol! that dealership is a joke!

iv been doing warranty claims left and right and my car is modified from top to bottom

kendalldwhite 10-30-2012 12:07 AM

Mine will install any part under warranty as long as my dealership installs it. Including turbo

86 FRS 10-30-2012 12:09 AM

lol. they just saying that to sell their TRD stuffs :bonk:

YourFearlessLeader 10-30-2012 12:10 AM

SMH. Does your research end there?

Magnuson-Moss Act. Unless the aftermarket part in question can reasonably bexpected to have contributed in the failure of a warrantied component, the warranty must still be honored. Camber plates won't cause the engine to drop a valve, an exhaust won't cause the headliner to sag, and a short shifter kit won't make your power steering rack give out.

fistpoint 10-30-2012 06:53 AM

Lol, a classic example of: "anything we don't SELL...voids warranty".

You:
My waterpump went out, i need it replaced under warranty.

Dealer:
We are sorry but you voided your warranty with your coilovers.

You:
Huh????

After getting my crickets removed I can say that my dealer is mod friendly.

All the reps were excited about the wheels and coils and made no mention of there being an issue with my repair due to my mods.

Heck they are even installing non TRD parts in the service center. They have done a Isis exhaust and a greddy intake already.

*insert facepalm*

Different dealerships will accept/decline warranty work based on if the vehicle is modified or not. I had a manufacturer try and void my warranty claim on something that was very irrelevant. In my case, I had after market rims that were of the same dimensions of the factory rims, yet the manufacturer tried to tell me that because of the rims, I was encountering this certain issue. Well, guess what, my issue was present before the aftermarket rims were on the vehicle and documented by the dealership/service department. Yea, the manufacturer shut up after wards about my aftermarket rims.

Sad you had to resort to such documentation.

Easy. Vibrations beyond factory tolerance (due to coilovers) killed it.

In general, MM act applies if replacement parts are done to OEM spec. If not - it does not apply.

What aftermarket parts are OEM spec, why would you replace them then?

Also I would think that would be a hard argument to make. How do they prove I did not have my coils on the softest setting making it more shock absorbent than OEM.

They would have to prove the that coils installed created excessive vibes, they just can't randomly throw out excuses.

Wheels/tires/oil filters/air filters etc.
MM act is not there for performance aftermarket to hide behind. It's there so that there is competition for OEM service parts.

I'm not trying to be a smart ass, but you can't seriously believe that if my water pump goes bad they will void my warranty because I have coils.

Exactly. It's stories like this that cement the opinion that car dealerships are one of the sleaziest jobs in America.

Does that apply to all dealerships and/or employees? Of course not...but a cliche becomes a cliche for a reason.
.
.
.
I had a sales manager(MANAGER mind you) try to convince me that the price on his computer screen($24200) was the cars invoice price rather than the base MSRP for a manual FR-S. I told the guy to just check Scions own website where it is clearly displayed as the base MSRP, he still wouldn't relent and kept insisting that is what the dealership paid for the car.

Sheer ignorance or deliberate lie? Who cares, I won't be spending my money there, especially after he told me directly they will not order any FR-S how the customer wants, only how they want it.

exactly what happened to me in Kingston NY.

i went to Middletown from the advice from another member on here. they had exactly what i wanted and didnt beat around the bush.

gave me a good price on the car. color i wanted. they even stayed an hour after they closed. which it was a friday afternoon at 6pm they close. they stayed there to talk about a price and go over a loan application and what not till after 7:15. great service. at that same moment they put a SOLD sign in the car and said shes all yours just get your insurance and you can come pick it up whenever.

now sandy screwed my plans. i have to wait either till tomorrow or thursday :-/

I WANTS IT!!!

Grishbok 10-31-2012 01:25 AM

I am going to do my best to break this down for you all so nobody gets screwed over in the chaotic world of warranties and repairs.

The moss-Magnuson act states that in order to void the warranty, they must provide proof that the modified or aftermarket part was the cause of or part of the reason.

This seems relatively straight forward and as though it would protect you if you want to modify your car. This is a wrong assumption.

Dealerships have the right to refuse work. They excercise this right frequently if they suspect a cars modifications played any role in causing the problem. They do this because it is not in their best interest to have a tech spend unpaid hours diagnosing a car to find out the manufacturer wont warranty it.

When the dealership excercises the right to refuse work, you have a few options. Seeking a lawyer is NOT cheap and will be a very lengthy process and will most likely result in you losing anyway. Another option is to involve the car manufacturers warranty claims District Manager. This guy will come to the dealership and inspect your car, and will make a decision as to wether or not they will pay the dealership to fix it. If you can convince this guy, you will be golden.

The dealership will only warranty fix a car when they know, near 100% that they will get paid from the manufacturer for the fix. A modded car brings that payment into question because if they fix it, and the manufacturer turns around and says they wont pay because it isnt their part, then the dealership is screwed.

Above all else, you must accept that they will not warranty parts that are not theirs.

Hope this helps.

Exactly. I have been doing this for over 15 years and never once have I had anything voided due to normal mods. I also have never had any of my friends have it happen to them either.

Anyway I am happy that my dealer is super mod friendly. They install all kinds of parts on cars with factory remaining warranty. Also all the techs and the service manager were in love with the mods on my car, heck they wanted to know what was next.
