Couldn't wait for the FT-86 so I bought... the ZUK

My G35 started having problems not worth fixing so I decided to sell it... BUT THE FT-86 WAS NOWHERE NEAR AVAILABLE to replace it. So I got a car in the interim cheap enough that I'd still be able to afford an FT-86 (not now but by the time it comes out) + possibly keep this cheapo car! At first I considered the redesigned 2012 Yaris SE and Scion xD or iQ then discovered I could go AWD with this...

Suzuki SX4!!

7 year/100k mile powertrain warranty :party0030:
Bluetooth/navi
MP3 playback/aux port
Heated mirrors/seats
23/30 mpg
AWD
8 airbags
6-speed manual

Same safety and reliability ratings as the Yaris and Fit worldwide.
The US just does not give this car the recognition it deserves. Plus Suzuki's marketing in the US... sucks.

Other facts:

Suzuki > Subaru worldwide
Suzuki > Honda in Japan
Suzuki Wagon R = #1 car in Japan
SX4 is used in the Top Gear USA segment, "Big Star in a Small Car."
WRC involvement/development with SX4.
Monster Tajima's SX4 set new Pike's Peak record this year (2011).

Did you get this info from Suzuki website?

Yes, Suzuki out sale Subaru, but Suzuki rank 9th place. Which means
Toyota > G.M. > VW > Hyundai > Ford > Nissan > Honda > PSA > Suzuki
Wagon R is current #1 car sold in Japan (in '10)... BUT Toyota, Nissan, Honda and few other company just started minicar selling race (since start of '11). Result, recently Wagon R selling dropped.
WRC involvement/development w SX4? yeah, they finished 31st overall in '08... good job
Tajima's SX4 set new rec in Pike's Peak, so you gonna expect same w your SX4? That's like teenagers buying Fiesta cuz Ken Block drifting it... lame, lame excuse

Again, I don't have nothing against you buying SX4, but you don't need to bring down other companies/cars. You're not making anyone jealous here

What's a suzuki?

Cool car tho. Cheap too, I bet.

You should make it a rally car.

Agreed with Ichi.

Nice car, but there was no need to prove you made a good choice to us.. maybe you were just trying to prove it to yourself?

oneday 10-28-2011 08:47 AM

The SX4 is fun and thrifty.

It's also Top Gear USA's Star In a Reasonably Priced Car car.

I convinced myself I wanted this car BEFORE I made the purchase. I'm just stating facts as to why this car went from unknown to I WANT in my eyes. I'm sure most people didn't have a clue about some of those things I listed. Lessons from WRC development was implemented in improvements on the production engine. Success on Pike's Peak is what first made me conscious about this car; otherwise I wouldn't have known this car existed. I'm not saying it's the same car but being aware that it has involvement in motorsports provides some appreciation for the brand in a similar way people here would prefer the FT-86 to be branded a Toyota because of its motorsports heritage.

And I see the xA, xB, and xD driven everywhere but hardly the SX4 though it arguably offers more for the same price. See my point of awareness?

Also, it's badged as the Fiat Sedici and designed by Italdesign Guigaro. Doesn't look exotic but still mighty for a subcompact.

When the American consumer needs an affordable AWD car what's the first brand that comes to mind? That's the reason I posted that.

FYI, base price SX4 AWD & Impreza is really close, $+-500 difference

same here. first got known to it as i did some research on autotrader etc... was about to get a pontiac gto and found the tC like a year ago. never bought one tho. Still, somehow i really like the brand scion esp. because noone over here in germany ever heard of it and it will make the FT-S quiet unique... prefer the fr-s over the ft-86 by far... dont know why... and the best thing will prolly be that i can use all the parts by toyota if something will break... wont have warranty but would lose it within time due to mods anyway....

Suzuki's entire American line-up has AWD + 7 year/100k powertrain warranty. Subaru and Jeep do not. Nor do they have the same global recognition. Like I said, Suzuki's US marketing sucks which makes Americans ignorant/unaware of what they're missing (like I once was) but the quality is there...

Nice "thud" when I shut my doors or hatch, gearshifts and clutch are super smooth, steering wheel has the right size and meatiness + controls, ride quality is great. Not trying to defend my car... I'm trying to show pride! lol

Yeah, but the warranty is unmatched. Dealers rarely stock fully stripped base models so you gotta compare w/ options. Then the price difference becomes huge. The tech package (bluetooth/nav/mp3+aux jack/fogs/heated mirrors+seats) only cost me $1550. A base Impreza w/ only bluetooth + aux jack (couldn't even find a navi option) already costs $800 more than my fully loaded car and a fully loaded Impreza costs $7k more than mine. I'm moving to a snowy area and really wanted an Impreza but after some cross-shopping the SX4 came out on top.

Ricepuddin 10-29-2011 06:38 AM

I drove one of those (awd variant) and the gear box made me want to punch a baby.

Congrats on the new ride, not my cup of tea.

NOOOOPE. Scions seemed always alot nicer to me. + alot cheaper. just compare the tC to the toyota version of it. the toyota version of it turns out to be crap :(

switchlanez 10-29-2011 02:25 PM

^I can believe that. Scion is ranked best in quality/reliability according to USA Today and Consumer Reports. Plus I've driven Scions... doesn't necessarily have premium materials but build quality sure is there.

Again, it's all about how people perceive the brand thanks to what? Marketing.

You will experience more snow in WA in general than you will in KS. KS you'll get a few snow storms at best in a general winter.

switchlanez 10-30-2011 01:39 PM

^Doesn't it depend on region? In Seattle/Bellevue it rarely snows (like 2 days last winter). In Kansas City they salt the roads and the apartment I'll live in does a courtesy snow shoveling service on driveways. I still haven't found out exactly how often it snows but it sounds like a full-on snow season over there.

I was thinkingng more the Cascades/Olympic mountains area of WA. I live in KCMO, snow happens a few times a season and it lasts a few days at most then it melts. The thing you need to worry about is ice storms. You get one of those every year to every other year. This isn't a high snowfall area.

Dimman 10-30-2011 08:29 PM

OP:

How does the AWD work on the SX4? 'Normal' Subarus with automatics like my Legacy use an electronic front/rear diff that starts 50/50 at low speeds in 1st and second gear, but then switches to a 90/10 F/R that is 'reactive'. The manuals are a 50/50 split all the time with a viscous diff for any necessary F/R changes. I found this out after I bought my (super cheap so it's ok) Legacy, and I'm not a fan of the 90/10 F/R reactive setup. To the point where I'm pondering a 5 speed $wap.

The SX4 with AWD and a 6 speed sounds interesting, provided it has a good AWD system.

I'll look out for those ice storms. So it's not actual ice that falls from the sky, right? Only after the snow lands and settles is when it becomes ice? Just wondering if a barrage ice splinters will be hammering my car when it's parked.

The SX4 does not have S-AWD like Subaru, but it does have electronically coupled i-AWD with 3 user-selectable modes via a rocker switch in the center console.

2WD
100% power to the front wheels. If poor traction conditions are detected, i-AWD kicks in and switches to AUTO mode.

AUTO
Up to 95% power to the front wheels for fuel economy. Up to 50% power to the rear wheels if conditions deem necessary.

4WD
Front/rear power is locked 50/50. Automatically switches to AWD mode at speeds above 36 mph.

Offroad review for your interest:
[u2b]WHfgcJK_KSk[/u2b]

The new 2012 Impreza is an improvement in all aspects compared to the outgoing model and took the SX4's crown for best fuel economy in an AWD car. The reasons I didn't get it was 1] I needed a car and it wasn't available at the time, 2] it costs way more in the end compared to what I'm getting out of my SX4, and 3] I wanted 6 speeds. :burnrubber:

Here's one example of how Suzuki>Subaru (I will admit I like the looks of the Subie).

[u2b]CAWtaYQKnEY[/u2b]

I read somewhere that Suzuki's target customer is the "confident explorer." Basically someone who is confident enough to explore other brands. WEAK lol that's where Subaru marketing>Suzuki marketing in America. Also shows how there are more "brand buyers" than "smart buyers" in the US but outside the US... that's not the case.
