Lowered Car, Losing traction while getting off drive ways
 
I just lowered my car with coilovers. minimal 35mm drop and im having a hard time getting off my driveway

I take the wide sharp angle every time, the bumper clears the drive way but once i go further something else hits the ground i dont know what it is and i loose traction.

car shakes a bit, traction control lights come on, rear wheels just spins.

has anyone experienced this?

i had lower cars in the past and i didn't have this issue.

just wondering what it could be

Check under the car for scarring/scratching.

hmmm, I had mine lowered on an Eibach Sportline and got no issues so far ... the ride is stiffer though.:D

Sounds like you're unloading one of your rear wheels. This car has a torsen limited slip differential -- if one wheel loses traction completely (i.e., gets lifted into the air), the LSD will not be able to direct torque to the wheel with traction. Just the way torsens work.

Get a buddy to watch from the outside and see what's causing your rear tire to lift off the ground.

Next time it happens, shift into neutral, pull the e-brake, get out, and look. You may be getting one wheel up enough to break traction with the ground (which would screw with everything).

Getting out and looking will be your best bet.

it's definitely coming from the front.

it doesn't sounds like metal so that's good.

sound like plastic scratching

i will check this out once car returns from corner weight balancing and alignment

forgot to mention my right side rear is lower than the other 3 sides. can this cause the issue of it putting the load to one side and lifting the other side?

Anything rubbing in the front shouldn't cause you to lose traction in the rear. Sounds like you may have 2 things going on.

The rubbing in the front could be from the tire rubbing against the fender liner...check that for marking/burning (or check that as well if you get out and look when you hear it).

Does it only happen if you back out? Or does it happen when you pull in as well? What about if you back in/pull out?

It might, depending on how much suspension travel you have, how stiff the suspension is, and the angle....might tripod.

Do you turn one specific direction to get out? Like, happen to always turn right? Doing that, you may be compressing the front left, pushing it up into the wheel arch (rubbing on the liner), or possibly scraping the bumper. That could lift up that rear right wheel (since it's already up higher) enough to trick the sensor/lose traction.

when i exit the drive way. the street is sloping down

i only exit and angle to the left since there is always a car parked to the right. so in effect i am exiting to the left and going up the slope

i havent tried exiting to the right

Hmm...well, if it's still doing it when you get it back, just get out and look to see...check under the car, the rear wheels (see if any are off the ground or nearly so), check the front bumper (to see if it's contacting), and check the wheel arches (to see if the tires are rubbing). Other than that, I'm not sure what else could be going wrong. I still think a couple of things are happening, because it still doesn't make sense that anything contacting in the front would cause the rear to lose traction.

yeah the car isn't that low. very minimal 35mm drop on the front but one side of the rears is lower. (might be 40mm)

also i have it setup to full soft all sides (as per moto-p spec)

but now i remember when i first went out the drive way after the install it didn't loose traction (stiffness setting unknown)

could it be because of the full soft setting now?

im hoping the corner weight balancing would fix this

I'm having a hard time visualizing your driveway/road interface...my best advice is, if it's still happening after you get it back, to get out and look...not much else I can offer, unfortunately.

Its more of the shorter suspension travel I think. I had the same issue with my STi. One time I got stuck in a really nasty parking lot/street exit. The springs have set now too but idk if that would affect it at all. But like was already said, ebrake and look and see or have someone watch

Mine kind of does this and it all depends on the angle. It never does it on the way out. If I come in at the wrong angle I will get a little slip and even a scrape sound.

Before I lowered the car I went up the drive and stopped with the e-brake and measured the clearance to the lowest point on the car. I had about 3.5 inches. I did not lower the car that much so I don't know what the heck could be hitting.

I think that these metal pieces are at the lowest point right in the middle of the car when you go up at an incline. I however have not seen any lines on the drive that would indicate these are rubbing or that anything is rubbing at all.

It's happened to me as well, I'm on eibach spring and happens when going on a wide angle to go up my drive way

happens to me literally all the time lol its pretty annoying. i learned how to give the car enough momentum to carefully roll up the incline at an angle to a point i know both wheels are planted on the floor and then i accelerate. if i mess up and 1 wheels still up i just carefully accelerate but the car looks and sounds retarded when 1 wheels loose lol it shakes like crazy if you dont take it easy

Your coilovers probably have much less droop than factory. You're probably lifting a wheel. Pull the e-brake up gently and the diff will transfer torque back to the side still on the ground.

That definitely happens to me all the time. I think the "scraping sound" is just the traction control taking effect. I can guarantee you it's not wheels rubbing. I have mine dropped at least 2-3 inches with 18x9's up front and they still don't rub. I still have the fender liners in it as well. do your tires have correct psi?

I'd put my money on coils not having enough droop travel as well.

Lifting a rear wheel in a RWD drive car will cause this and the only remedy is a true LSD. I'm not sure how EBFD functions in this car and whether it does anything when a wheel is lifted. Don't rely on driver aids.

This is an example of what happens when you do not understand what you are doing. Put back original springs/shocks and call it a day. This car is low enough for daily driving. If you are not building a dedicated race car, you do not need coilovers.

this happens to me everyday, im pretty sure its just the traction control at work, but yeah it did sound like something was scraping bad the first time i heard it i got pretty scared.

86_ZN6: the car doesn't have a lot of droop travel to begin with in the rear, as it is a carryover from the Impreza suspension that doesn't have a lot of droop travel. I would buy better coilovers. Japanese coilovers are never going to have that much droop travel and their valving sucks for our roads too.

Those aren't BAD coilovers, but probably not right for your application. Why coilovers anyway?

Talk to RaceComp or TIC. Those would be my go to suspension nerds.

i wanted something that can be adjusted to my own preference

since no adjustable shocks are available yet, i went with these coilovers

i used to have koni yellows and i loved those. hope they make one for our cars soon.

Adjustable as in compression/rebound or height? Again, I encourage talking to @Racecomp Engineering and @Turn in Concepts about this. You'll be able to pawn that set off on a forum member without much loss I bet, thus giving you the money for a proper setup. Though to me it sounds like you might have too much product for your needs.
