one mod and one mod only

I don't plan on taking the car to race track (not yet at least), definitely no street racing, and only drift/do donuts for fun in an open parking lot..

So if there was only one mod I should get that I can actually feel for a better performance/experience for regular driving (and occasional spirited driving), what should it be?

I have a flossy shift knob and I think that might definitely have to be on the list.

kendalldwhite 10-21-2012 11:53 PM

crank pulley or wheels

Veloist 10-21-2012 11:53 PM

I'd say tires but then again that's not really a mod (since they'll have to get changed anyways) so you might as well change the tires and still have that one mod in mind

jstans84 10-22-2012 12:03 AM

I'd say either exhaust or if you are looking for <$300 get an Injen Intake. When you are normally driving it sounds about the same but when you get on it that thing is LOUD (in a very good way).

QFry 10-22-2012 12:05 AM

exhaust...the sound alone changes the whole feeling of driving...

W2 10-22-2012 12:09 AM

Pulley, fairly cheap and a noticeable improvement. I also like my intake and the added sound but the pulley is the best bang for the buck IMO.

wheelhaus 10-22-2012 12:16 AM

It depends on what kind of mod you're looking for. What are you least satisfied with, or what about the car stands out that needs a change or improvement to you?

JonnyRocket 10-22-2012 12:17 AM

Clutch pedal adjustment. I just did it, and it's a world of difference.

duh, you want a tune, more fun doing those donuts! more racecar power to drift!

TouchMyHonda 10-22-2012 12:28 AM

Lol at crank pulley... Coilovers if you could only do one mod.

dem00n 10-22-2012 12:32 AM

Trunk carpet "mod/flip" of course...

JoeBoxer 10-22-2012 12:32 AM

Tune no doubt

_hollywood 10-22-2012 12:33 AM

I tend to leave items like pulleys oem, for peace of mind, as for driving experience, clutch mod is the best thing you can do for this car, if i had to spend money i would buy the whiteline bushing for the transmission, seems to be a cheap effective item.

#1 mod to do is replace the flex capacitor or change the tachometer fluid. instant 100hp gain

:drinking:

ichitaka05 10-22-2012 12:50 AM

This is the best mod for spirited driver once a while

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXz7lJhlFC0"]Initial D AMV : AE86 vs EK9 - Forever Young HD "ON" [720p] - YouTube[/ame]

& put other Ini-D OST and blast it! It'll give you 20hp (in your mind) & you might able to do in-air hairpin jump!

On serious note... prob for me, brake pad upgrades

Wise 10-22-2012 01:07 AM

Vinyl Shopping list.

5 HP gain for each recognisable tuning company on there.

Actually performance muffler bearings for 120hp, even better top grade blinker fluid for a whopping 150hp or more.

Seriously, though, based on what many are saying, the very first thing I'd do would be brake fluid upgrade. People say consistently that the brakes in these cars overheat easily. After that, brake pads.

Best mod would be a user mod.

But anyways, you want performance mods so a new intake and exhaust would improve the experience. Otherwise, you need to ask yourself what you think the car is lacking.

Synack 10-22-2012 01:35 AM

Tune

Hands down

digital_assassin 10-22-2012 03:07 AM

Tune.

F1point4 10-22-2012 08:18 AM

Driver training, tune, tires. Choose one.

jadewbj 10-22-2012 11:50 AM

I would say coilovers or springs depending on your budget. You will feel that a lot more than any other mods. The mild amount of power you gain from a tune, exhaust or intake are not super noticeable in the butt dyno.

Plus there is very little warranty hassle from springs or coils. With a tune you could run into large PITA if you have an engine issue. The exhaust not so much of warranty issue. Intakes can be taken off easily.

Do you have any of these mods? and if so please list whose youre running cause I for sure feel more power running different maps + pipes etc.

If factory pipes vs. oversized aftermarket pipes didnt flow better would they sell?
same with tunes, do you suggest the dyno graphs lie about what a tune alone does? vendors who show gains after installing their aftermarket headerback systems must be full of shit huh? dynos also are useless.

ok, LOL, all my mods are for sale, I'm going back to stock. But gonna get me some coil overs...

Turbowned 10-22-2012 12:12 PM

Tires. Tires. Tires.

Tires.

I don't know much in this area.

Can you explain how a pulley would make a significant improvement to the FR-S?

First, I have a set of coils and rims on the car. I have TEIN flex and Rays Gram Light 57X rims.

Second you are not getting the point of what I am saying.

I am not saying that all those items don't add power or are not effective. I am saying that if you only get one the one you would "feel" the effects of more is the suspension. That is if you are driving through some turns etc, not drag racing.

If I swapped you in and out of 4 cars (with a set of ear protection to eliminate the sound factor); one stock, one with just an exhaust, one with just an intake and one with just a tune you would be hard pressed to tell the difference when driving around an autox course.

An exhaust adds what 10HP? All the intakes I have seen barely add 3 and the tune adds what 15 unless you go to E85. It is just too tough to notice 10HP in the "butt dyno" when daily driving as this guy says he is going to do.

However if you take two cars; one with factory suspension and one with springs or coils I and run through an autox course you would 100% be able to tell which one was not stock.

Do the mods add power? Yes 100%. I am just saying if you get to choose only one your money will be felt more in the suspension rather than gaining 10 hp.

Now if budget is not a consideration than I would say a turbo kit. But since he is limiting it to one mod I think that would be outside the intended budget.

Supposedly there's better pick up/acceleration since the engine has to work less to turn the pulley (I think)... but are there any negatives to a lightweight pulley? maintenance, warrany voids, etc?

White64Goat 10-22-2012 01:33 PM

LS-7 swap :burnrubber:

If you're not going to track or even autocross on any occasion, then I'd just call it a day and add a rear exhaust to the car... Otherwise nothing really comes close to the benefits of the 'driver mod' and also better understanding the hidden talents of this car that need no modification whatsoever.

Good luck with your call.

CaptainSlow 10-22-2012 02:07 PM

Good set of wheels and tires. Will help in performance (cornering and reduced rotational mass) and appearance.

import_bible 10-22-2012 02:50 PM

I would say tires, but how much are you looking to spend?

I swapped my brake fluid out with Motul RBF 600 and took her out to the track, no brake fade what so ever. Best 60 bucks ever. While your in there might as well swap out your clutch fluid too.

showbe 10-22-2012 09:03 PM

A fat wing big enough to balance the car out :P

When I say fat I mean FAT FAT FAT. Like this...

or make sure you add a huge exhaust to make sure you get enough power for those times when you gotta use nos

CaptainSlow 10-22-2012 09:36 PM

I agree with driver training! Learn to get the most out of your car. I still stand by my wheels and tires suggestion, though...one of the best overall single modifications you can make

sho220 10-22-2012 09:47 PM

Exhaust.
