The curse continues...

So I spent Friday night installing my KW V3's, and the better part of Saturday getting them dialed in. I woke up this morning and took my girlfriend to Starbucks. I pulled in and parked far from anyone in the parking lot.

We go inside and are enjoying our coffee when a woman comes in and announces, "Does anyone in here drive a grey Scion?". I reply, "I do....". She says, "I just hit your car."

...You've got to be kidding me. JUST made my first car payment....

I come out and see the woman's truck - an early 00's Ford F-350 quad cab extended bed sitting next to my car, and the front driver's side of my car all torn up. Apparently she was leaving the parking spot next to me when she cut the wheel entirely too soon, running her rear wheel into the front of my fender and tearing off the front bumper. Short of the hub cover on the truck popping off, it had zero damage. Looks like I'll be getting a new front end, as the hood is dented, fender is toast, front bumper is done, driver side headlight is broken, etc.

Does anyone know if panels are/can be shipped from Toyota pre-painted? I haven't ever had any luck with paint shops matching metallic colors..

terrypm 10-21-2012 06:51 PM

:mad0259:

I believe no parts are delivered to the states pre-painted.

ApoNono 10-21-2012 06:51 PM

That sucks! Sorry man

Gixxersixxerman 10-21-2012 06:56 PM

I didn't even make my first payment before I was backed into.. Then two days later had my windshield cracked by a rock, now a huge scratch from getting my car washed at the local place that was highly recommended.. The parts don't come prepainted.. I'm looking at a 3 month wait the body shop said for my rear quarter panel.. Don't know the reason other then him saying its coming from Japan and is not a common replacement part.. Guess the only good news, is she did stop instead of just driving off

whaap 10-21-2012 07:02 PM

Man, I'm so sorry that happened. The only corny thing I can say is that some day this will be history.

Veloist 10-21-2012 07:13 PM

I'm truly sorry to hear such bad news. But at least they told you and didn't just leave.

Asphaltfrs1 10-21-2012 07:20 PM

+1^
Sorry to hear that bro, but like a few posters said. She didn't run away.
So I guess that's a positive :/

Wise 10-21-2012 07:21 PM

Woman + F350 = Recipe for destruction.

At least she had the decency to come in and find you though.

They most assuredly don't need to drive big trucks.

Also dude, sorry to hear about your car.

Subie 10-21-2012 07:36 PM

I don't think you can get pre-painted parts although I really wish you could! My BRZ is going back to the body shop a third time on Monday because they keep screwing up the paint (they're repainting the front bumper). Good luck and keep us posted!

CircuitJerk 10-21-2012 07:43 PM

Sorry for your misfortune.
At least you can be somewhat grateful that you have a darker color. At least those are not as obvious.
Hopefully the insurance company can give you the option of finding or choosing a shop.
If that's the case, shop around and ask them if they actually take the time to better match the color as opposed to mixing the formula and shrugging it off as the best they can do.
If it's the latter, they just have a sprayer, not a true coatings technician.
A good shop will take the time to run some test panels, check the color flop in proper lighting and then make some corrections.

briang0901 10-21-2012 07:47 PM

I'd be pissed, value dropped significantly from that, on the upside the person had the courtesy to find you.

einzlr 10-21-2012 07:54 PM

oh man, what a drag! But as others have said, my first thought was at least she fessed up and went and found you instead of just leaving a note. So many parking lot stories where the perp just leaves. And like @CircuitJerk said, a good shop can do a near-perfect colour match. Find one that takes pride in their work - some of these guys will be more exacting than even you ever would be yourself :)

jimmillion 10-21-2012 08:15 PM

man the low front end must make it hard for people in giant cars to see, because there's a lot of these stories. - maybe we all should start pulling in instead of reversing in. the trunk should be high enough for them to see hopefully.

Lonewolf 10-21-2012 08:17 PM

Time to start carrying orange cones to put all around the car when parking since so many truck/suv driving idiots can't see shit...

deucethemoose 10-21-2012 08:18 PM

I will be calling around to the auto body shops that the local Toyota dealers refer to. There is one near me that uses OEM paint, but as I understand it, the flake is added in manually. I'll also be asking about a diminished value assessment. I have a few friends in the wholesale buying/selling market and they said realistic figure is 20%.

PNW FRS 10-21-2012 09:05 PM

Sorry to hear of your misfortune... a tough pill to swallow, but as others have pointed out, at least the lady had the decency to come in and find you instead of just leaving a note on your windshield.

I'm getting my asphalt gray in a month or so... I'm thinking I'll be parking in the hinterlands whenever I park in public....

Good luck with the whole insurance-thing!

At least you can get a number without holes drilled in it. The only good part.

Don't worry I got in a wreck with my frs
The body shop did great work!

Before:
Attachment 18188

After
Attachment 18189

Just got it back after a month in a half on Thursday.

Yes, but again, a skilled paint guy can work miracles - even custom tweak the colour to exactly how it looks on your particular car.

edit: @gmanculb, yeah I remember that thread. Looking great now! :)

Since its a newer paint job it'll e alot easier for them to match it. They reprinted my hood front number and left and right front fenders and it looks flawless. I would worry about it to much!

Good luck bud. I got mine tore up on July 27th and I'm still waiting on the splash shields for the bottom and the stays that hold the bumper at the fender gap. Parts are back ordered till November.

The other day I brought my girl to the mall, I parked it as far back and in the "darkest' corner, i even cut off the line beside me just in case no one would park beside me!, I come back two hours later, a person parked right beside me. So close i couldnt even get into my car. I was so mad, my gf just laughed she didnt understand. But good thing it was a bmw 3series and the person looked like they took care of their car.

I have this thing where people love to park beside me, even though there are millions of other empty spots everywhere.

Good luck on fixing your car!, If a well known body shop gives you their word theyre gonna fix it, then they usually do a good job, with my past experiences.

fistpoint 10-21-2012 10:44 PM

I've had my silver RSX repainted twice in two different locations at 3 weeks old and several years old between the jobs...you cannot tell, the match was perfect.

It CAN be done.

zaptorque 10-21-2012 10:51 PM

Dollars to donuts the bimmer driver was looking for a nice car to park next to because that usually means its owner will be careful. He parked close because he wanted to be as far from the car on the other side as possible and because you had hogged half the line. Ask me how I know ;)

I have never in all of my cars had so many people park right next to me when i am literally in the back of the parking lot, i even watched a guy back into the spot right next to me in his rusted out ford ranger, i was literally walking away and watched him do it, i could not even get in my car to repark it....

The only time i dont mind is when its a fellow car enthusiast so i know they actually care about not hitting my car...

Titus Will Collision has done a great job in the past on my truck.

rice_classic 10-22-2012 04:34 AM

Add me to the list of the "curse".

Went to play at the track recently. Setup my 10x10 tent and said to myself, "Seems pretty calm, I'll stake the tent after the morning meeting." Then, during the meeting a gust picks up carrying my tent and drags it along the side of my car.

4 large scratches a barely visible dent. I think it will all buff out and I'll probably leave the dent.

To add insult to injury, not only did the tent also break but later in the day some "business man" with metal in his face hands me his card telling me he can repair the scuffs and dent for "$500-600". Seriously?! Some people.

JLMtm 10-22-2012 03:59 PM

Other then the fact it can be fixed don't worry, but stating it as a "salvage title" is the worst part

deucethemoose 10-22-2012 05:14 PM

Won't be listed as salvaged as it wasn't severely damaged or considered a total loss by insurance. The initial inspection puts the repair cost at a just a little over $3,000 but they are going to update me (and the woman's insurance) with a more detailed quote once they start the teardown.

Initial report includes:

Front bumper cover
Left corner support
Grille
Emblem
Left headlamp
Left fender
Left fender liner
Remove opti-guard (reinstall after three weeks post-paint)
Repair wiring harness

Not to mention paint and blend.

Damn, sorry to hear. It won't become salvaged but it will show up in the Carfax.

deucethemoose 10-22-2012 05:37 PM

No carfax either. It was on private property, so the police didn't come out and file a report. No accident report from the police = no carfax accident record.

But I won't be selling it anyways. I hold on to my cars.

If it's going to a bodyshop, it might get reported.

deucethemoose 10-22-2012 05:44 PM

The body shop I brought it to told me they don't report to Carfax. :)

tdog227 10-22-2012 06:01 PM

If you use Autocheck Vehicle Report it will show any insurance claim attached to the VIN and/or title change from anywhere in the US. CarFax will only show accident reports and bodyshops that turn the information over.....

+1

Autocheck has more detail. My point is that when you file a claim, it'll enter the system so quit fooling yourself. :)

I've seen the same thing happen with a dude behind the wheel. Only difference? He tried to take off...owner came out as he was quietly (lol) trying to make his escape...That guy probably learned a lesson; If you're gonna drive a vehicle that screams "LOOK AT ME!!!" (giant gaudy truck, lifted 10 feet in the air, and loud as hell) be careful! :D
