Daily Use Or Weekender
Anyone using their frs\86's as weekend cars or everyday use?
I have an old corolla that I drive to work and finding i drive the frs on weekends...or goin out It just sits in my garage most of the week :( does a car like this needs to be driven or not putting a lot of miles in it won't hurt? |
I can't decide on that question either.
|
I traded an '02 Mazda Miata on my new FR_S. It had 38,000 miles on it. That's 3,800 miles a year average. Other than routine oil changes, wipers, tires the only thing it needed was a new battery.
If you just use it for week-ends and special occasions it should provide you a lot of pleasure for a long time. |
I plan on driving it when the weather allows till summer then all bets are off this is such a fun car to drive ..
|
I am garaging the FR-S Nov to April. Originally bought an xB last fall, much less costly car than usual but I liked the look/thought is was a great deal if not somewhat novel and practical. I caught wind of the FR-S (looking at Scion stuff online). I just jumped and preordered as soon as I received notification they were taking orders.
Fast forward to August, very little interest in my xB on Autotrader. Had to keep it insured to try and sell it. Finally gave up so FR-S is driven in nice weather and usually looks really clean. The xB is for rainy days dor now and will be the winter car. Next year will only insure 1 car at a time while the other receives minimal coverage and stays in the garage. I don't know about you, but I find insurance really expensive with both cars on the road simultaneously. I'm 48 with a good driving record. |
When I can afford both, I will be using my future BRZ for a summer DD and a WRX for a winter DD
|
It's my daily driver and my only vehicle.
|
Drive it...Don't Hide it...
|
The twins are reasonable to buy, insure, good on gas; needless to say, mine is my DD and my only vehicle.
|
A friend of mine has a Toyota Echo with 36000 miles...it's an '03 model! I have just over 160k on my '03 vehicle. My vehicle is in better condition in several areas and not just from taking care of it or the lack thereof on the Echo owners part.
The point I'm getting at is that the car will definitely still age and wear out after time regardless of driving it or not. Specifically the rubber pieces throughout the vehicle are the parts that will wear out no matter what. They still need care and maintenance. It also needs to be started up at the very least every week for the battery. |
Most rubber components don't "wear out". Usually they suffer from exposure to the environment. The best thing you can do to insure the longivity of your ride is to keep it salt free and keep it garaged.
|
Mine will be my DD when it comes in ... if it comes in

lol weekend car this is an entry level sports car i don't really see anything that needs to be preserved or especially taken care of.. i don't even care about parking away from cars in the parking lot lol it may be a nice looking car but at the end of the day its still just a scion. i know many people on this site will park the away from the crowds and all that i'm not hating..more power to them (and excercise)
something about this car just makes me have no problems with mashing on the gas pedal all the time..its pretty good on gas and it just feels so durable and well built like its built to take a good beating like any great daily driver should.:) also i love how effortless the steering is. going back to my other car seems like a workout now |
you can keep it 'salt" free, and still drive it all year! that's why they have "car washes"

Dad's and mine's FR-S is a garage queen, we got it one week ago and my dad has only put 65 miles on it. I don't think it'll be broken in until Spring or even Summer 2013. It won't be driven in the rain or on misty days either. We're not going to take the FR-S to its limits either. That's why we bought it, because it's already fun to drive without any effort.
We don't drive much...dad's 2003 4Runner has 37,000 miles on it. I think it depends on how much the owner values or how much they need the car--to decide if they want to let it just sit through most of the week. My dad's friend has 8000 miles on their 2002 MR2 and they've gone through 3 batteries already. Quote:

edit: just read your response so are trying to preserve the frs as well? thats pretty cool..not all of us have the money to do that haha |
I plan on driving mine until it falls apart. Then I'll save up again and buy another one.
Life doesn't wait. |

It definitely won't be like this, but if we had LOTS of money, I would do this, and also have one for dd'ing! : http://www.speedhunters.com/2011/08/...time_capsule_/ |
is there an insurance thing that covers non DD?
or would you have to insure both cars like normal? |

There will rarely be a day where I do not drive my FR-S.
I drive it every chance I get, despite having multiple family vehicles in the household which are more comfortable and versatile. |
I still have my 92 MR2 which i also drive a lot still. My 86 gets driven 50% of the time I'd guess

I didn't like having a car stored 6 months for winter, it's like paying the full price and only use half of what you pay for.
2 days out of 7 is even worst. It's you car, your money. my 0.02 $ |
I drive it every chance I get. I crave it. I look forward to it. It's an addiction. I turned in my 2009 Corolla XRS to get it. It is my DD, and it has the exact same tire size, so, I have winter tires that I will slap on it in about a month. I have washed the car more times in the span of two months than I did in four years with the Corolla. LOL - I'm serious. I do understand caring for it. Ok, it isn't a Ferrari, but, it still is a nice car and it absolutely sucks when you get your first door dent. However, you can't be afraid to take it anywhere. Proper care and attention is in order. Aside from that, drive it, don't hide it. The biggest sin would be buying this car and not using it for what it was meant to do - which is to put a gigantic ear to ear grin on your face and laugh like a little boy.
|
I guess I'm one of the few that considers it a weekend car. One main reason is that I work long hours over the course of the week. When weekend hits is when my fun starts. You're right its no Ferrari or lambo but to me it feels like I'm driving one but with a 25k price tag on it.

Hahaha, funny how were almost on the same boat... so i own a ae86 when i picked it up it had 50k original miles, Then i drive it for awhile then i bought the frs and for the first 4 months it sat inside my garage and i just looked at it everyday.. Now when my ae86 was closing to 60k i decided to commit and garage the car for the rest of its life 60k to be exact miles in the odometer will show its value 20 years later.. So now i dd the frs .. And what a mistake ive done i shouldve just kept the ae86 miles down to 50k and drove the frs all this time because not only my ae86 will have an original 50k but the frs is so much fun... Im enjoying driving the frs everyday and i look forward to going and getting off work just so i can drive the frs.. i love the car and i suggest you too enjoy it.. |

Weekend car, maybe gonna drive to work on Fridays but much rather take the train.
Morning freeway traffic is retarded especially in a car like this. I'll probably sell it around the 25000km mark too. |
It's my daily driver. Can't find a reason not to drive it!
|
Daily for me. This car is too fun not to drive! One of the best aspects about the FR-S is it's cheaper compared with a Porsche Cayman or even a 370z, both in terms of initial cost and maintenance/fuel. What that means is I can just drive the car and not worry about it. I take care of it, but I won't baby it to the point where I won't drive it.
I also understand where people are coming from who want to keep their cars fresh and pristine though. Definitely have that thought too sometimes. |
Daily driver, track car, and have taken it on vacation recently (~3500 round trip) - ready for my second oil change already after a little over 4 months of ownership. There is no day I don't want to drive the car, only when forced to do so I regrettably take another vehicle... like moving stuff with my truck.

it's just an odd situation for me
I've never owned two cars before I guess I'll look into selling my corolla after winter |
Mine is a weekender because I deliver food for a living and don't want to risk any sauce leaks I'm the frs
|
Daily/only driver for me. I just took it to a drifting event yesterday and it was great! First time I've ever been told to drive faster and spin out! And for some reason, I've been able to drive longer distances without feeling sleepy behind the wheel when I'm driving this car.... (I usually don't last beyond an hour and a half of driving, weird I know)
|
If I could afford a decent daily and had the garage space, I'd probably want to keep the FR-S as a fun car. "Decent" would have to be another car that's at least 25k though, like a WRX or GTI or MS3. At which point, I'd consider just getting one fancy 50k car, which I wouldn't really do, which is why I'll never buy a second daily beater, which is why I just drive my FR-S all the time.
|
This is a commuter car for me. Actually my first car ever! Been driving toy trucks for the last 21 years and I'm loving it! Still have a truck and always will. 300K Toy 98 T100 4x4.

Mine is just a weekend and night use car. My company supplies my car for work duties
