DIY - Whiteline Positive Shift Kit

This DIY guide can be used for other vendor's bushings.

@cobrabyte, @post_break and myself were just cranking these installs out. We did this while installing the rear shifter bushings for our gearbox. Thanks to both of them for the assists!

As I posted in the Rear Shifter Bushing DIY http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19767, this is a good bang for buck mod. This Whiteline bushing combined with the Perrin shifter bushing and good gearbox fluid, makes a dramatic difference in shifter feel. Trust us, this is something you will want to do. The notchy, crunchy feeling of the Aisin is smoothed out. 3-2 downshifts feels like an unlocked feature. Can't be happier.

We did not do discrete mod testing, so we can't comment on this item's singular effectiveness. We also cannot comment on the use of this on automatic gearboxes.

I am not responsible for any damage as a result of this modification. Remember to be safe!

Installation Steps

Raise the car. A lift makes this 100x easier, but if you use stands, please lift the entire car onto stands to keep it level. Refer to @GrimmSpeed DIY here http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10111

Another great writeup. i wish you were a little closer, if there is ever a meet in Dallas i would love to come hang out and talk cars with you guys.

Wish I had friends with lifts...

post_break 10-15-2012 12:05 AM

Can definitely tell a difference since putting this bushing in. Much less slop when the suspension is upset.

green_comet 10-15-2012 01:22 AM

Very nice, thanks for an awesome how to.

Nardi330 10-15-2012 01:49 AM

thanks. no much change in noise/vibration level?

Vorshlag states slight vibration around 750-850 and VERY slight noise that they got used to quickly.

If there is any additional noise, the howling from the tire and exhaust note cover that up.

Nardi330 10-15-2012 08:26 AM

Thanks.

Great Write up

Great writeup, thanks!

I had one of these installed when my car was on the lift getting the Evo3 catback. To be honest, I don't notice a whole lot of difference in normal shifting, but I think the difference is supposed to be more noticeable when you're really laying into the gas and then doing a quick upshift.

I should've done the Perrin Shifter Rear Bushing at the same time, I bet that would've made for a huge difference in conjunction with the Whiteline Positive Shift Kit and the Motul that went into the tranny and diff.

stevo_12v 10-17-2012 06:00 AM

Thanks very much! I'm half way through with this install and was wondering how the hell they removed that cradle brace. I had a feeling that the mid pipe had to be removed, this confirms that.

Edit: finished installing the bushing. Definitely feels much more precise. Little bit noisy though, but I'm sure I'll get used to it.

This may seem kinda pointless, but do you think the Whiteline kit used in conjunction with Perrin's new transmission support would be beneficial or even possible? https://www.perrinperformance.com/br...mission-stiffy

Great DIY tutorials by the way, all are very professionally done. Thanks for supporting this platform!

I have the @PERRIN part in hand and will be finding out this weekend! Stay tuned.

Any updates on using these two together? Has anyone tried it yet by trimming the whiteline?

Interested as well. ...

Thanks for the great write up. Just to add to the community it was pretty easy to do this without removing the exhaust I just used some spanners instead to remove the bolts instead of sockets but of course it meant I couldn't get a torque wrench on it.

Kuzuri 01-25-2013 02:11 PM

I just finished my install and I have a question for anyone using this bushing...

I installed the whiteline bushing, as well as the perrin rear shifter bushing and the perrin trans support mount. (i trimmed the whiteline bushing to allow the perrin part to fit)

I took my car out for the first time and noticed that vibration was noticeable anytime the car was moving.. no matter how much gas i was giving it. i expected some vibration...

but when im really getting on the car it sounds like i can hear the transmission winding up the higher it revs... it almost sounds like a supercharger... but muted a little... is this normal?

Uh oh...I am curious if this as well as I have the same parts ordered (not installed). Could be an issue with the installation perhaps? Or ...?

Yes...true...but if the obvious noise thst wasn't there before is apparent now....then there's something off. If it's as bad as he is describing it...we can only troubleshoot with the mentality of knowing "what has changed in the equation."

I'm only concerned because these are on the to do list.

post_break 01-25-2013 02:56 PM

It's because the Perrin piece isn't compatible with the whiteline bushing. It's pretty obvious when you have to trim the whiteline bushing. It's not recommended because it just sends vibrations into the cabin. Remove the Perrin bolt and use the stock one.

if we think that all thats happening is that the perrin bolt is just transferring more vibration i think ill leave it... im going to check again to make sure everything is tightened correctly and if it is ill just leave it be

Correct. @F1point4 did clarify that the two pieces were incompatible "at this time" but he also stated that you can grind/ shave off the inside diameter of the whiteline bushing to allow the Perrin piece to fit. Also why I wanted to keep tabs on this thread to see if he found a solution.

Still waiting. ...:(

Yeah, he found a solution, don't use it with the whiteline bushing. You can drill out the whiteline to make it work like the poster above, but with both pieces installed you get harsh vibration and loud cabin noise. I really don't understand what you think you stand to gain by running both parts. By using both parts you're effectively making the transmission mount a solid piece of metal.

Kuzuri 01-25-2013 04:10 PM

I guess its mostly in first gear.. its still there in other gears, just not as noticeable...

lightdir 01-27-2013 12:27 AM

I just completed the whiteline transmission bushing and the Perrin rear shifter bushing today. No additional noises to report. Install was super easy just take your time. Also to note I did this from jack stands. I layed cardboard down underneath the car to make moving around under there easier. Not enough room for a creeper.

So....in other words. ...what this ^^^ guy did is totally pointless, and the fact thst both perrin and whiteline created these are also pointless. ..?

Same here mate! I have installed these parts over the weekend and the car sounds a lot more noisy than what it was. But I am ok with it. I remember tighten the bolts so i am ok with it. Maybe if I take the Perrin bushing out it wont be as noisy...but if you think about it is like having the Cusco kit with the Whiteline kit. I am ok with it as long as it does not cause any damage on the long run...which I dont think it will.I will double check.

Mate, the whiteline helps with the lateral movement of the gearbox (faster acceleration in corners) and Perrin helps with the up/down movement...therefore running both makes sense. Check Cusco kit which is a bit of both but less support on the lateral movement.

By running them both you basically make the transmission very tight therefore you send slightly more power to the wheels.

Yes, it would be a bit more noise in the cabin but each to their own I guess.!

He effectively removed any play in the transmission mount. Now you've got a solid transmission mount, a soft diff mount, and soft motor mounts. I'm all about stiffening the power train but I wouldn't stiffen just one section of it.
