Auto-Up/Down and Passenger Window Not Working

So I just noticed this earlier today, but my auto-up and auto-down on the driver's window stopped working, but it will roll up and down. However, the passenger side won't respond at all. Here's the REAL kicker: My illuminated window buttons are blinking.

I'll be taking the car by the dealership, but has anyone else heard of this issue? I just tried doing a quick search and only saw posts about window seal and squeaking issues.

eyebone 10-14-2012 05:23 AM

I heard something about resetting those buttons by holding down and ehh I forgot but it should be simple.

Nate219BRZ 10-14-2012 06:23 AM

Put car to on, engine off. Push and hold button down until window rolls down and you hear a click. Then hold window button up until it rolls up and you hear a click. Someone forgot to reprogram your window controls....

The same thing happened on my FR-S driver window one morning when it was frosty. The window stuck to the rubber seal and then the same problem mentioned here happened. The method you describe to reset the window does work. I hope that isn't going to be a common problem with the window getting stuck to the rubber.

mine was from when my ECM was swapped out...

Gen 10-14-2012 11:47 PM

I've had to reset mine 6-7 times, but that's because I've had the door panels off that many times. Every time I've disconnected the switch from the wiring I've had to reset. Takes less than 10 seconds to reset, so no biggy.

chanomatik 10-15-2012 02:35 AM

I'll check out your tip in the morning. Thanks!

Yruyur 10-15-2012 02:46 AM

The blinking happened at the dealer when he was in the ecu and reset the memory for only the windows while troubleshooting the passenger window function from the driver side. The holding the button tip did work. I think the door had to be shut though. Passenger side button from the driver side still only works 50% of the time. They are ordering me another switch. They will end up telling me this is how it is supposed to function though.

Worked! Mad geniuses up in here!!!

Thanks.

My windows started this after a frost this morning. I had my ECU replaced recently. I'll try to reset it myself this afternoon. Thx

chanomatik 11-13-2012 11:49 AM

I thought this occurred after a washed my car, but when I started paying attention more closely, it stopped happening after car washes. Then last night it did it seemingly at random while it was just a little cold outside and it's BEEN freezing outside... I reset it. No clue why it just gave up at that moment, after almost two weeks without incident.

The dealership just told me what was posted here about resetting it.

BTW, you only have to click the driver's window up and down to reset them BOTH. One less button to worry about.

Update: So I get a call from the dealership after they spoke with Subaru. Get this, Subaru is claiming that they're getting a fair amount of calls on this issue and they all come from owners with tinted windows, and their explanation is that there's a small amount of metal in the tint that's causing the auto window program to crash. After I stopped laughing, I asked why it's only happened to me twice when we had a freeze after a rain while my windows have been tinted for months. They couldn't answer that one, but did say that the word from Subaru seemed "odd". They're going to talk with the regional rep when he's in next week and let me know what he says. Classic.

_F-R-S_ 11-14-2012 02:47 PM

Yea its from the frost

RazorHawk 11-14-2012 07:39 PM

Same here, Was coming home, and noticed a whistle, realized my window was down a little, so put it up. Got home, and noticed the auto up when you close the door didnt work. Came in straight to my computer having remembered this thread, went back out and fixed it up.

THANKS OP!

This morning it frost my windows... And accidentally I did the same procedure in this thread... and it works fine...

MmmHamSandwich 12-05-2012 01:20 PM

Bump. I have this issue. No tint, started after the first frost the windows have encountered. Will try the reset now...
Reset worked, though after my first attempt my driver's window got stuck in the own position and wouldn't respond. Had to cycle the ignition twice before it responded.

I'll bet we'll see more people complaining of this as winter takes foot.

jesperswe 12-05-2012 01:27 PM

My windows does this every friggin morning now when it's cold. But after a reset they work again, but i've stopped doing that to since they'll just stop working again next morning....

I do NOT have tinted windows either. It's just a shitty mechanism...

Contact your dealer and let them know so hopefully this issue gets reported. I will do the same.

ALSO you may want to be persistent about resetting it for now. If your windows are in this failsafe mode and you open your door, the window will go down but it will not go back up when you close your door. This leaves a crack that, while somewhat sealed, could probably allow moisture in. Water getting into that area and freezing/expanding could probably cause issues as well.

Superhatch 12-05-2012 04:52 PM

No tint, same issue. I started another thread but didn't notice this one when I searched.

I'll try the reset after work today, but also noticed it after our first freeze.

It rained on Monday night and was 61*, car sat on Tue, and Wed morning it was 21* when I came out, drivers door did the auto roll down but didn't come back up. Pass window wont respond at all.

At lunch drivers window went up and down, but not in auto, pass still didn't work. I went and got a wash (40* out) because my car was covered with pollen (from the 61* day...Go home weather, you're drunk) and when I got done neither window worked. Then the drivers window would roll down, but not up...then 10m later it rolled down and up but not in auto...pass window didn't work the whole time.

Have an appt with the dealer for tomorrow.

Superhatch 12-05-2012 09:04 PM

Did the ON position procedure and both windows are working normally. I did this at 6:30pm and the temp was in the low 30's.

Called the dealer and informed them of the change and canceled my appt. If it happens again I won't do the fix and take it in. After I told the dealer about the down/up procedure he said "Yup, that's the fix for all Subaru's with stuck windows". So it's a Subaru "thing"?

Anyone with other Subies have this issue in winter?

They know about it but it's "the way it works in cold".:bonk: Since it's somekind of failsafe system so the mechanism doesn't get damaged.

Yeah when I close the door and walk away there is a small crack left since the window doesn't go all the way up. Pretty anoying if it starts to rain:mad0260:

This just happened for me today and your solution fixed everything. I had a dealership appointment set up for next weekend. I had the window moving down maybe a quarter inch when I opened the driver side door, and not go back up, so when I was parking the car, I was having to go all the way around to the passenger side, crawl across, use the window switch to put the window back up, then back out of the passenger side (the window moved properly there), and lock the doors.

Cancelled the dealership appointment and let them know about the solution. Guy said he'd check for a TSB.

I have been doing that also. People gave me these weird looks, like what is wrong with this guy. I do hope the dealership can give fix this issue. Seeing when it hits -20, it will be hard to bring the window all the way down and back down to reset the window.

Thanks to this post, I saved myself $120 at the dealership tonight. They wanted to charge me to diagnose this problem and claim it was caused by my 6.5" speaker baffles hitting the window actuator. In all reality, I it was caused by the cold weather and a recent snow storm. They took care of the invoice for me and sent me on my way.

I made them leave the baffles on, as it didn't sound right went the service writer called me the first time.

dj_mallu 12-26-2012 03:08 PM

I had the same problem today. Hold it down!

JDMenrique 12-30-2012 04:11 PM

off to see if this works. for the record, i also dont have tint.

JDMenrique 12-30-2012 04:14 PM

YAY!

GregV 01-02-2013 05:04 PM

And searching the forums saves me yet another call/trip to the dealership

i had this issue this morning , ive had my frs for less then a week , this morning it was very cold an my windows were frozen once i got inside and started the car , the AUTO lights on the buttons were flashing , the p/s window did nothing at all , once the cars heater warmed up an the d/s window worked it would only work if i held the button, the auto feature would not work at all , after work everything seems to be working fine other then now my d/s window squeels like crazy

Urka 01-03-2013 04:24 AM

Seems like the cold whether has been playing a factor. Seen two frs's come in for the same concern. All they both needed was reinitization of the auto function. I believe it could be caused by the windows themselves being frozen to the seals; and when you attempt to roll down the window they're not defrosted yet, the window motor/actuator draws too much current and somehow looses memory or resets itself. Another thought is when you open your doors, the windows are supposed to drop a little to clear the upper seals, maybe similar cause could be from when you open your door in the morning. Definitely keeping an eye out for a definite cause for you guys.

Update: I was blindly reminded these vehicles are equipped with jam protection. Window motor ecu senses jam, stops everything. I am just confused why it looses parameters, and needing further initialization. Ecu logic :iono:

So the metal in the door and the rest of the car doesn't bother it, but the tiny amount of invisible filings in window tint is enough to confuse it?

Maybe you accidentally activated the valet feature? Check the button in the trunk.

Chillyairplane 01-03-2013 07:19 PM

Ha! Something in my trunk must have hit that! I didnt even know it existed. Thank you!

chanomatik 01-03-2013 08:09 PM

That happened to me. I had no idea there was such a dumb button until I took it to the dealer as part of a list of things I wanted them to do and check. Even after that I didn't check for the button's location myself until yesterday after I got my cargo tray. Now that I see where it is, the button is even dumber than what I previously believed it to be.

I don't either! That's a load of crap! Motors not strong enough maybe?? Mine was frozen shut and I had to force the door open. Even after scraping the ice it was still sticking and I got stuck in the car! I took it to Toyota but they of course said everything was working normally and when I asked them what I'm supposed to do when I can't get into the car they told me they didn't know, but to try getting de-icer. Grrrrrreat....

baadshah 01-05-2013 09:38 AM

dont have tint and have the same problem here. driver side doesnt fully roll up after shutting door and passenger side doesnt work.. its very annoying after you spend so much money on such a car

n8dog11914 01-05-2013 07:28 PM

Quick Question:

Has this happened to anyone when the temperatures were NOT below approximately 40 Degrees F?

NYC BRZ 01-06-2013 09:00 AM

I tried the reset and it didn't work. My passenger window will go down using the pass side switch but not the main driver side one. I DO NOT have tints so Subies claims are BS. Also like others mentioned I was getting a whistling because the windows won't go up all the way. This is so annoying! Going in to the dealer Tuesday.
