Scion FR-S to Compete in Pirelli World Challenge GTS in 2013

http://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/w...scion-fr-s.jpg

Quote:

The Scion FR-S will be joining the ranks of the GTS class in the Pirelli World Challenge series next year, with Robert Stout behind the wheel.

Stout saw much success racing a Scion tC during the 2010 season and will be able to show off just how great of a sports car the FR-S really is, going up against V8-powered Ford Mustangs and Chevrolet Camaros in the GTS class. Stout took home the Drivers’ Championship, Rookie of the Year, and Sunoco Hard Charger Awards in his 2010 campaign in Pirelli World Challenge in the Touring Car class. He had a total of five wins, nine podium finishes, and 11 top-five results in 12 starts and one pole. That season also gave Scion its first-ever Touring Car Manufacturers’ Championship.

The 2013 Pirelli World Challenge GTS campaign will be backed by the Japanese automaker along with long-time KSR partner, Lucas Oil.

“This is a great day for sure,” said Robert Stout. “This is what we have been working for over the past seven years. To get picked up by Scion is a very special honor. You can do everything right, put your time in, pay your dues, build relationships, win races and still never get an opportunity like this. It fits like a glove, the car is young and trendy not to mention the hottest release in years for the automotive industry. I fit right into their customer line, Scion is grass roots people and so is our team. There are only three of us, but now we have the needed support from Scion and TRD along with our good friends at Lucas Oil to go up against some of the best factory teams in the business. To be mentioned as part of the outstanding group of factory Scion drivers and join that unique fraternity is definitely one of my career highlights. We love the Pirelli World Challenge format, venues and the crowds they draw, we have a lot of friends there and I can’t wait to get the season started!”

An impressive handling car, the FR-S is significantly down on power compared to many of its class rivals, though sources say the car will sport a supercharger mated to its 2.0-liter boxer engine to keep it competitive.

Interesting... what's the rule on Pirelli World Challenge series? stock engine? swap engine? chassis?

Anyone enlighten me, so I get somewhat of idea, please~

2.1.3.2: Grand Touring Sport (GTS)
The allowed body styles within this class are coupe, sedan and convertible. The cars permitted in GTS are typically marketed as “sports cars”, “sport-touring cars” or performance versions of “luxury” cars but at a lower permissible preparation level than GT. Forced induction is permitted on cars that come equipped with forced induction stock. Power output ranges from 300-400 hp. Weight varies depending on power output and tire size. Front-wheel, rear-wheel, and all-wheel drive configurations are permitted.

Grand Touring Sport (GTS): Cars eligible in GTS are prepared to a level much closer to that of a stock vehicle. Additionally, many FIA GT4 class cars are eligible as well as cars built to the 2008/2009-spec Touring Car regulations until the end of the 2011 season.

Engine Modifications

Engines may be blueprinted and balanced. Full-prep engines may replace reciprocating internals. Custom intake manifolds may be allowed if deemed necessary. Engine management systems are free. Ignition system components may be replaced. Must maintain an operational on-board starter.

GTS: Noise limit is 110 dBa. Only electronic driver aids installed from the factory are permitted.

This car looks like it's going to be stuck N/A according to the GTS rules. However they are allowed to build the block, head etc.

The 86 will have to rely on its low CoG and power to weight. It will be interesting to see the team squeeze 300rwhp out of this in N/A trim. Lots of timing, race fuel, etc, are going to be part of the equation I'm sure.

EDIT: since posting this I have been made aware (as everyone else has) that this car will be supercharged and supercharged by means of a modified TRD supercharger which, by process of elimination, deduction and other other sleuthy skills (and some not so sleuthy) we know that the TRD supercharger will be available to the public sometime in the near future.

jadewbj 10-12-2012 03:43 PM

Awesome news, I will be watching this closely. Either they will have to make some big power NA or have TRD release a supercharger for the car to comply with the rules.

yesssss:popcorn::popcorn:

Now, if we can just get them to initiate a Contingency program for CLub Racing, SCCA, Solo and any other form of Motorsport the general public wants to run these cars in we are in BIDNESS!

Scion FR-S SCCA World Challenge racecar, ready for the track

Quote:

Of all the many Scion FR-S models here on the SEMA floor in Las Vegas – and there are a great many of them, have no doubt – the very purpose-built car from Stout Racing is one that we may hear about again in the future.

The Stout Racing team will be campaigning the racy FR-S in the SCCA World Challenge series in the upcoming season, and is currently building some buzz on the Scion SEMA show stand. The car makes use of a supercharger that was jointly developed by Stout and TRD, as well as a front splitter, doors and rear wing – all by Vertex.

Driver Robert Stout will run the FR-S in the GTS class next year, with a debut slated for the Streets of St. Petersburg event, scheduled to go off in March of 2013.

SCCA World Challenger isn't a nationwide broadcast, is it? I wonder if i'd likely be able to ever watch a race.

It's going to be Supercharged by TRD.

I presume that is how i'm going to have to see it. Is it just on the SCCA's official site?

WC aired on NBC Sports Network (formally Versus), the new home for Formula One in 2013.

SPEED will be transforming into FOX Sports One at the end of the year and will become a general sports network like ESPN and NBC Sports.

Scion Racing will also be competing in Grand Am's Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Street Tuner (ST) division in 2013, so there will be plenty of opportunity to see the FR-S race wheel-to-wheel next season.

:) I'm moving today and having cable setup and will have a DVR system for the first time too. Looking forward to it, since I have no time to watch TV any other time.

What I find funny though is there are going to be a lot of people out there that will or don't know anything about their very successful tC programs and only see the FR-S as the car that brought Scion to the motorsports arena...tisk tisk.

Maybe not,..the driver of the FRS in GTS class is Robert Stout, same driver who won the touring class in the Tc in 010. Usually they mention your past accolades and team if your a front runner,....lets hope he is.

Unfortunately the internet doesn't have an IQ filter though.

Guarantee you the engine bay is stock. The exhaust is stock which is a dead giveaway that the car is probably mechanically unchanged.

No they are not stock in the least, highly modded for power and longevity/reliability,....forged internals etc.

What I mean is that the car as it sits now is most likely not modified...yet. Popping the hood would likely reveal nothing as I'm sure they have not had time to build the engine up yet.

DarkSunrise 11-05-2012 10:56 AM

Damn that car looks good. With TRD supplying the supercharger, looks like they may be getting set to release a kit for the FR-S/GT86.

correct

fast-forward to ~ 6:35 mark and at 6:45 he specifically says it will also be developed for the masses to use on the streets.

MTCRX 11-05-2012 04:06 PM

If Stout Racing is to use the supercharger, according to SCCA World Challenge rules, it has to be a part available to the public. I think that is a good sign that TRD will release a supercharger kit. The car would need some sort of boost to be competitive in that class. Rumor is that Stout Racing is working with TRD to develop and test the supercharger system.

nashsnazzy 11-06-2012 02:36 PM

I think you can watch the races online.

PhastekSport 11-06-2012 04:43 PM

We confirmed that there was no supercharger under the hood. It looks like it is still under development at this time.

Took them long enough, now hopefully some other network will pop up with proper racing and automotive programming.

Saw this last week:

As I have said in a couple other posts, available to the public does not necessarily mean reasonably priced. Great news nonetheless.

Main website is http://world-challenge.com/

To watch races streamed live go to http://www.world-challengetv.com/

They play on NBC sports network ~3 weeks-1 month after the race happens during the middle of the day.

My friend, Travis Wolcott, races the #30 car (Volkswagen Jetta GLI) in the TC class.
He lives in Boulder, CO. He had his first 5 professional races last season (2 weekends), and podiumed in 2 races (1 each weekend)!
