resale value

was just curious as to opinions on which of these two cars will hold resale value better over time? frs,or brz? comments? thoughts?..thanks!

akuhei 10-06-2012 06:55 PM

IMO, BRZ will do better over time due to less of them being produced and better internal accessories (leather seats and nav).

when i bought, i never intended on selling, she will be in my stables for a LONG time :D

but in all seriousness, the BRZ; less of them being made in the us, higher quality, higher msrp, more options, ect, ect

I agree with akuhei.

Celica00 10-06-2012 07:00 PM

after getting all these ridiculous car of the year awards and whatnot, i'm guessing resale will retain higher than average

Ravenlokk 10-06-2012 07:17 PM

Also have to consider with all the CEL, and other "first batch" flaws, 2nd production run and to a greater extent 2014 models will probably hold their value better. If i didn't have one and were buying a used one, i'd be a bit reluctant to buy one of the first. It's still too early to tell, but it does seem like toyota/subaru fixed some of "the problems that dont exist" after the first batch.

I think he means the semi-leather seats, red stitched e-brake boot, HID headlights...etc etc... The premium accessories the FR-S did not provide as an option.

jmaryt 10-06-2012 08:21 PM

yeah this is what i think too! both cars are built the same way on the same assembly line in the exact same factory.they are '"both" essentially "subarus" my feeling is,they both will retain similar resale value over time because they are, in fact, the "same" car"
now with that said, one wonders IF it is possible the brz,MAY use better quality assembly parts, even though those parts are identical!,as the base price of the brz is MORE than the base price of the frs.i believe the difference in price is applicable to the "audio "head" units installed in each at the factory! comments? opinions?

That's exactly what it is... but also the brand name could maybe affect the price a little... The "Subaru" badging is a little more "premium" in itself.

jmaryt 10-06-2012 08:36 PM

yes i have "heard" this too! it's pure conjecture at this point!
guess we gotta wait a while to really find out!..just sayin'

Tanuki 10-06-2012 09:14 PM

The limited is a nicer interior, the premium really is not. The FRS floor mats are much nicer than limited or premium as well.

I would guess that both brands will have an affect on resale values. Which will be worth more? Really hard to say, but I would imagine the Premium and FRS being available will bring the Limited resale down and all three will depreciate pretty equally from there.

the things that decide a better price
auto leveling HIDS
interior fabrics
headlight housing
NAV

all those things easily cost 2k alone, the only reason the gap isnt as great
FRS has a better stereo system
springs(different spring rates) the material used is actually more expensive than the BRZ by a margin but still more expensive
plus the first 3 oil changes are on them, easily 100 bucks a change
my dealership is giving me 2 filters free (cabin and engine air filters) not sure if it is the norm but that also is at least 40 bucks

FRiSson 10-06-2012 09:22 PM

Too early to say. The BRZ is a bit more limited. But Subaru could go the way of Saab. It is a tough future for smaller car companies. Mazda is in deep trouble already. Both firms make great cars, so has nothing to do with quality.

Exactly...Not getting rid of her...I'm already wanting to buy another one!! Hopefully a PreOwned untouched specimen!

I too believe the BRZ will have a higher resale?? The FRS and BRZ are built to the same standards as they are all built in exact same plant in Gunma, Japan by Subaru, however the lack of availability of the BRZ over the FRS and the "upgraded items" on the BRZ...many will be hunting for one. Just an opinion...

tripjammer 10-06-2012 11:55 PM

Resale will be about the same. Scion resale value is already good. Look up a 2008 scion Xb or tC, these suckers hold their resale value. Look up a 2008 wrx they hold too. Percentages are about the same. Look up a 2008 Nissan 350z or Porsche boxster s, resale value is like half of what you paid for the car. Don't even look at what a 2008 ford mustang is worth...

Figure on the frs and BRZ being worth about $15k to $18k after 5 years with less than 50k miles.

jmaryt 10-07-2012 12:59 AM

yeah! tough part will be keepin' the mileage down! ehe! he! he!

Umm, Subaru sales are up 25% from last year, and 2011 was a record year for Subaru. Oh yeah, and they've had sales growth for the 3 years before 2011. In this economy, they've actually improved their sales (one of the only companies to do so). So I doubt they're going the way of Saab.

I doubt either of these cars is likely to be a good investment, even if you were to keep one in storage for 30 years. Unless of course people keep crashing them so that in 30 years they become rare. :)

FRiSson 10-08-2012 12:11 AM

Sales is only a part of the issue. Subaru is going to have to get vastly better fuel economy. It doesn't have the cash to compete with the big players and fuel economy is a real weakness for the firm.

yormaX 10-08-2012 12:39 AM

Resale value will drop overtime when Toyota/Subaru
decides to make a Generation 2 FR-S, BRZ.
Things like tweaks to the engine and a face lift from time to time.

subaru is a subsidiary of fuji heavy industries, and is an extremely solvent
company taken as a whole.if subaru was in trouble, daddy will come to the rescue with an infusion of cash to keep 'em propped up!.they have done well over the years, primarily as a result of unique all wheel drive product, and ,of course, the outstanding japanese boxer engine variant!

i agree! cars are notoriously "poor" investments. as a "depreciating" asset, keeping "resale" value as high as possible is,indeed,a "noble" pursuit!

all cars are going to have to get better fuel economy,as the 2025 cafe standards are "outrageously" insane!

true! gotta remember! it's a car and is subject to improvements over time to keep it competitive, and desirable for it's intended purpose.

I think that just comes with the territory of AWD. Do they have any part time AWD systems?

Not sure I agree about the higher quality. Essentially the same car.

helloimgil 10-08-2012 12:30 PM

I would imagine public perception would play a small role into this - hence Subaru getting getting a premium. There were times at the gas station where someone would come up and say oh that's the Subaru version! (and without having looked at the front bumper) its SoooOOoOoOo much nicer, wow look at that better body style, /walksaroundcar, Yeah, it's so much better than the Scion and it's all wheel drive right?
:iono:

With that aside, I do have to say that the alcantra leather, toggle switches, climate control, heated seats, HIDs are a very nice upgrade on the limited BRZ and should also factor into resale value.

This makes the most sense to me.

ohh yeah and dual climate control

i would consider that better value for 2k more if you did all that stuff aftermarket to the SAME specs it would easily cost you 6k+

I think we have a differing perspective of quality. I'm thinking in terms of build quality and quality of materials. I think your perspective is that of features. Not disagreeing.

Like you said...build quality doesnt change because they are built at the same place. So features and brand will determine the future value.
