MR2s

Talk to me about them. Specifically the first generation.

Thanks!

anything in particular you're looking to find out?

Go Go go-kart discussion!

They're nimble with crazy turn in, a great peppy/ high-revving engine in the 4A-GE (or supercharged 4A-GZE, if you're lucky enough to find one for a good price), fun as hell to drive, with a well documented and apparent problem of transmissions popping out of....2nd? Its been awhile since I've read up on them.

I'd have a garage full of 'em if I had money to spend.

Nothing more to know!

You have an MK2 mr2 turbo is it quick? hows the turbo lag; is it really bad?

VenomRush 11-24-2009 03:26 PM

turbo lag till about 3k rpm on 10lbs of boost for mine

edit.. sorry for the thread jack

Pop a black top in there and call it a day!
This guy has a great how to http://www.padandwheels.com/mr2/index.html

A buddy of mine has owned quite a few, i started a project with one but scrapped it due to rust.

it's decent, but i'd still like 100whp more than where i'm currently at. i'm on a stock turbo right now (ceramic CT-26), so i get nearly zero lag. full boost of 14psi by around 2800rpm. i have a built high compression stroker and tuned EMS.

turbo lag in general is really exaggerated. it's not an issue except for impromptu street racing, which is kinda gay anyway.

drag racing: 2 step and learn to shift, revs are always high = no lag
road course: learn to shift, revs are always high = no lag
autox: how much boost do you really think you need in 2nd gear?

there's a good quote about turbo lag that goes like this: "people who complain about turbo lag are in either the wrong gear or the wrong car."

:)

lol good one i was asking because i was thinking about an mr2 because it is a small engine with turbo and i was comparing with people i know who have evos or wrx's and they all complain about turbo lag, I know their different cars but similar engines. Ive never driven an mr2 but i want to buy one.

S2KtoFT86 11-25-2009 11:20 AM

I'm considering buying one that was used a parts car. Still dunno if I'm going to atm though.

VenomRush 11-25-2009 12:13 PM

quick question.. here i go thread jacking agian...

did everyone with an MR2 here come from the mr2oc board? cuz i did

Periods are used for reasons.

Damn you people that have driveways and not apartments. I can't wait until I have a place to put multiple cars and work on them.

Quigonjay 11-26-2009 07:27 PM

i love my mk2 turbo but the mk's 1 and 3 are much better drivers cars, partly due to weighing about 500-600lbs more

NESW20 11-26-2009 08:51 PM

i think the MKI and MKIII are generally easier to drive, but the MKII is a very good driver's car as well. i haven't spent much time autocrossing or tracking anything but a MKII, but it is extremely rewarding.

yeah. i did the engine machining (except for the rotating assembly balancing), engine assembly, swap preparation (fuel pump, wiring, gauges, shift cables, axle hubs, etc...), installation, troubleshooting, and everything else necessary to make it run. :)

after i had an AEM installed and tuned poorly, i re-did the tuning myself and it's much better now. it was all definitely a learning experience, and if i had to do it over again (i might anyway, just to make it more exactly how i'd like it), i'd do many things differently.

EDIT: probably helps that i'm ASE master certified... haha

awesome.
I just bought my 2nd gen almost complete long block a couple months ago. All i need is a LSD tranny, axles and a side mount and thats about it. I plan on upgrading alot though before i put the motor in.

Hows the increase in displacement? I havent decided if i want to go the same route or stay 2.0L. The extra low end would be nice but i dont want to sacrafice any RPMs. Is your redline the same as stock or lower?

Thanks

NESW20 03-18-2010 06:33 PM

i would recommend staying 2.0L. get some .020" (86.5mm) pistons, either 8.5:1 or 9:1 compression ratio, a nice 1.0-1.4mm multi-layer steel head gasket, and call it a day. i love my high compression and off-boost response, but it's a PAIN to tune with my worse-than-stock rod:stroke ratio, coupled with my 9.3:1 compression ratio (9:1 pistons and .8mm head gasket).

my redline is 7800rpm, mostly for autox, so i don't run out of gear as often, haha.

if you have any questions, i'd be more than happy to answer anything i can! :)

Midship Runabout 03-19-2010 01:12 AM

AHHH the decisions!
What i think i "should" do is just keep this motor relatively stock. maybe a nice bore like you said of 20 over. and some decent cams, shimless buckets, 18ish PSI and call it a day for a daily driver for now. I figure i can get away with a piggyback with these mods. I would think 260ish WHP would be plenty fun for DD and occasional drift/drag/track.

Then once i get a FT86 as a DD, 98+ 5S block 2.3L 25-30 PSI E85 track monster

Abflug 03-19-2010 09:01 PM

Iīve never been driven to a mk I or MK III, but I think because of the lightweight they are really quick!

I use to drive a USdm MKII NA for 5 years, only use for touge and daily drive - the 5S-FE power is OK, but definitly not for drag (honestly this engine is not engineerd for drag neither everyone i faster in the straight lane is faster then you but thatīs not the point). The engine power is enough for daily drive. I drove a lot of "GERMAN ENGINEERING" and other european cars ;) but in contrast the MR2 is whole another driveable car which I am prefer, love and never would change!

3 months ago, I got my 1st snap oversteering, to quick on wet roads :bellyroll:, damn f*'&, but I was very lucky with it - nothing wrecked :burnrubber:

now I am thinking about swapping to 3.0l V6 or  2.0 turbo GENIII but I think the turbo is too freaky!

Did I mention, my English is not the best? Sorry for that :bellyroll:

So what can I say? I am a MR2 addict and yes I am in MR2OC... .com and co.uk... and I think there is much work for the FT-86 to do, to get me that satisfaction of driving even there are about 20 year difference in years...

CHEERIO!
