Hard start ??

Well yesterday I was leaving to see a movie and the car had time to get cold from when I got back from work, I tried starting it but it failed, maybe I cranked it 2 seconds at most, tried again and started after 3 seconds of the starter spinning.:iono: No other issues when driving or once it's started.

After work today, it did the same thing... anyone else had the same problem? I'm thinking it might just be the key transponder lagging or me tying to start it too fast...

1000 KM, no CEL.

jesperswe 10-03-2012 06:19 PM

It happend to me once actually. A few miles later i had the CEL on.

I think the car (seems to) flood way too easy. If it does not start up after 2 spins or 3 spins, then it really needs a lot more spins to start.

I will start waiting for my red key light to stop flashing before cranking it up, I'll post my findings.

DYOLF26 10-03-2012 09:00 PM

I think the biggest thing is to wait until you hear the fuel pump stop priming. This usually takes a good 2-3 seconds from when the key is in the on position.

Lee358 10-03-2012 09:03 PM

So you just have to let the glow plugs heat up?

Happened to me the 3rd time in a 8 days period, still no CEL. This time I waited for the key light to be off.

I'd like to bring it in to the dealer, but I got no CEL and it doesn't do it all the time. They'll probably just note it and send me off on my way.
What would you guys do? Wait until it's "really" broken????

jduffy 10-09-2012 06:04 PM

Funny you mention that, it's happened to me twice now but about 700 miles ago and hasn't happened since. Both times it was very hot out, like 105+.

Hope you get it figured out.

Hawaiian 10-10-2012 01:42 AM

It happened to me very early on. What i figured out was that i was pushing the brake down so far that my heel was clipping the gas just enough to open the throttle, and flood the engine. Like Rob_g says... it floods easily.

Not trying to revive an old thread but did the OP ever find out what was going on? Have had this happen to me several times too and it's very inconsistent. Not really sure what it is, the engine seems to hesitate a bit and "shudders" kind of like the shudder you'd feel when you're in too low of a gear or the engine is about to stall.

I had the car for 15 months now and only had this hard start thing happen 4-5 times. I don't even remember the last time it did it. Break in issue? I don't know. Fixed itself. I drive that thing everyday too.

mid_life_crisis 01-24-2014 05:57 PM

I've got push button start and it did it to me twice last week. Once in 40's (F) and once about 20. I've never had a modern vehicle do this to me. They always just start.

Are you holding the start button down? You're only supposed to push it in one motion 'click'.

I suppose I could have mentioned that I've got 6000 miles on it. I know how to start it.

dont turn the key from off to start in one quick motion. Go thru all the positions, you should feel each one.. that will give the fuel pumps enough time to ensure the system is primed and all the control modules are holding hands.. and your ignition switch will thank you for it..

humfrz 01-25-2014 01:06 AM

.....?????...........just turn the key, pump the gas twice, pull the choke half way out and push the starter .... what's so hard about that .....??

nos145 01-25-2014 01:49 AM

Oh, on that one you had to set the brake, set the throttle, set the spark ..... then get out and crank it ..... always remembering NOT to wrap your thumb around the crank handle .... http://www.runemasterstudios.com/gra...images/eek.gif

:iono:

People were having issues with it, figured I'd point out the easiest problem/solution combo. There was a video but I'm having trouble finding it.

I won't link to the thread about the steering wheel lock so you don't get even more offended. :bonk:

Efenys 01-27-2014 08:08 PM

I've found this car doesn't like to start facing uphill nearly as much as normal. Might just be me though.

This car doesn't prime the fuel pump when you first open the driver's door like my old VW, so just hit the button twice and wait for some warning lights to turn off, then crank the engine with the third click.

I have yet to have this problem. I just clutch in, hit start & the engine turns right over after a few turns. Even a cold start in cold weather, it turns right over without issue.

i had this happen to my 2014 one morning. it was a cold Newfoundland morning about -30C out. It started went to 2000RPM and shut off. Did this 3 or 4 more times and finally caught. i attributed it to ice maybe? hasn't happened since. maybe this is a different problem than the OP. i also have push button start.

hmong337 01-26-2015 01:38 AM

Bumping this up.

This has happened to me about 6-7 times now. Like others it's very inconsistent. But it's annoying that I bought this car brand new and it has trouble starting. Even my beater 95 civic I had never did this to me.

kinda5150 02-13-2015 12:13 PM

this recently started happening to me as well. did it once or twice last yr then nada until a couple weeks ago. it's done it about 7-8 x now, always after i go out at lunch time or when i leave from work. it always starts up right away in the morning at home. i have about a 40 min commute, then about 3 hrs later i go to lunch--sometimes it takes 3-4 seconds to start, then all is right w/the world. if it doesn't happen at lunch, then it happens when i leave for the day. really weird. wondering if may be fuel related as i recently switched to exxon (from shell). obviously i switched back and have had one long start in the past wk. maybe the car is just really picky about the fuel, or at least when it's cold out.

When we visited the Route 66 exhibit by the LA Zoo, saw a Model T. Was surprised it had an electric starter.. story goes that the starter was developed early on after an engineer's loved one died from cranking the engine by hand. Slipped or some shit. Amazing how things work out..

Yep, I remember as a kid, back on the farm, (oh, here he goes again http://www.runemasterstudios.com/gra...s/rolleyes.gif), to start our old Oliver tractor, I had to set the crank, stand up on a 5 gal bucket, jump off onto the crank and spring off of it .... quickly ..... quickly being the key word ..... :eyebulge:

Yepper, never had a flat tire ..... never got stuck ...... :D

OK, back to the 21st century .....

This has happened to me as well. Maybe 4-5 times total. It always seems to happen at work where I am parked on a slight downhill slope towards the driver side (car is angled down towards the front driver's side corner). It may be coincidence but I'm trying to narrow down what makes this location so special. This doesn't seem to happen in any other parking location.

Might just be my imagination, so I'll continue to monitor.

Try the prestart priming method and see if that works for you.
Just turn the key fully into the on position but not all the way to start.
Wait about 5 seconds then turn it off and then immediately to start.
This has made a huge difference for me when starting in the -25 temperatures of late. Fires right up first crank every single time.

My car had been having a rough time starting for a week or so. One day it was completely dead, and would just make a loud "click" sound when pressing the start button. I followed the procedure in the manual of holding the button for 15 seconds, which resulted in 3 quick "clicks", but it still wouldn't start. I jumped the car and ran it for ~15 minutes. The next day it was dead again, so I brought it to the dealer. They tested the battery and determined it had a faulty cell. I just wanted to contribute to this post because a dead battery may be able to be covered under warranty, and I've noticed this car has been particularly cranky when starting cold compared to other cars I've owned.

There have been a pile of battery related issues mentioned on here. Don't claim to know why but seems to be a pretty common problem. As best as I can recall they were all replaced under warranty though.

Just to throw this out there, but the new battery is visually different than the original one. New one is 100% black top and black bottom; the original had a black top and white/translucent bottom.

That might just be the dealer's choice of replacement battery. My 2015 BRZ (production date of 12/14) came with the black and translucent battery.

Just bought this car a week ago, it has 500KM and it took 3 tries to start the car. WTF.

I waited for a 2015 model to get rid of most of the bugs but this one is still here. Should I go to the dealer?
