Gauge mounting options
I did some searching and maybe was too vague, but I'm surprised I didn't find anything. If there's a thread out there already, feel free to point it out.
Is no one else frustrated with the lack of gauge pod placement? I really don't want a pillar pod, but I just don't see a nice spot that I like for 2-3 gauges. As much as I hate the stock NAV unit, I don't want to replace it for a gauge panel. I have some leftover STRI gauges from my STi and while I won't be needing boost anytime soon, I would like to install Oil Temp, Oil Press, EGT gauges. I'm stoked that the oil galley plugs are both easy to reach. That was a bitch on my WRX and nearly made me commit suicide on my STi. Has anyone already started playing with custom gauge pods? I know there are some talented 'glassers out there! One that I've seen a pic of (can't recall where) was three gauges on the passenger-side plastic dash trim clocked towards the driver. Looked cool, but also kind of far away. I want them in my line of sight. I thought of little attached pods on either side of the cluster hood, but I think it'd look silly. Thoughts? NOTE: this is not the place to discuss the necessity of gauges. I have them and I like using them. Just looking to brainstorm some ideas. |
Let's have a picture up for brainstorming purposes...

Maybe fabbing up a little box that sits on the dash above the left AC vent?
|
Thanks for the pic. I have a feeling some will just go with the tried-and-true gauge in the AC vent approach, but I want to keep the cool air.
As for above, I wonder if that would have a negative affect on audio. I'm not averse to steering column pods, but I don't want to lose sight of the cluster. Most I've seen stick up too far. |

Overhead by the mic. I saw something like that in a mazda. A pod that can hold 3 gauges.

One of the catalogs from Japan shows guages in a replacement panel over the glovebox.

I think a pod that goes on the dash something like these will be developed.

Here's the one I was talking about. I only see a RHD model at this time.

I like how that one keeps the vent, too bad there's no Scoob-specific option.
PLX has a similar option: http://www.plxdevices.com/product_in...MULTDM100OBDII |

A head unit like the GTR would be ideal i think.

Cover up the analog speedo imo
|
Seems like the panel above the glove box was designed for this. You can remove it very easily by pulling on it. Notice how the back is hollow with TONS of space (normally occupied by the airbag in most cars). Unfortunately, it's to the right a bit far out of view.
Best option is to get rid of the analog speedo like what Gruppe M did with the OEM NSX Volt meter (see below). They replaced it with a boost gauge. In real life though.. the gauge was so small and much too vague to be of any real use. Lower right use to be a volt gauge. Replaced by Gruppe M to a boost gauge. http://www.nsxfiles.com/images/sears_00_alex9.jpg |
Yeah, I'm just not crazy about the placement. Like I said, I'll probably go that route if nothing else presents itself. At least it's space for 3 and I'd get some fiberglassing practice.
If I've got time after Subiefest, I'll take some pics of the gauges in different spots of the dash. |

someone needs to make that dash trim piece on the pessenger side into a 3-4 gauge holder. would look amazing.
|
Yeah, I was gonna say as well that the passenger trim piece is just begging for gauge mount options.
And it's not like you have to pay attention to them all the time. Do what I did with my Mustang. Set the gauges so that when the needle is pointing straight up, everything is fine. Quicker to read, and even though people might be like "lol your gauges are crooked," when you tell them the reason, they'll be like "oh, you're brilliant!" |

Since this is brainstorming. How about changing 2 din headunit to a single din and touch a/c controller (or unit the has both). You will reclaim a lot of real-estate for gauges in center console.

Whoa crazy! I didn't know that such a thing was available.
Single-DIN is a neat thought, I bet 52mm would fit fine above/below that. OOH! Or...one of the single-DIN flip-up display HUs. It'd cover the vents, but that's always been an issue. Then some gauges would fit below it. Personally, I will most likely stick with a double-DIN unit but I don't plan to replace it at all any time soon (stock one is crap, but not what I want to spend money on right now). |

For those looking for a stealth approach, we designed this 7 function gauge/board for the SW20 Mr2 that replaces the factory clock board with an updated one that has the clock with 7 additional gauge options: - E85 content - Boost pressure - Water temp - Oil pressure - Air fuel - Air temp - Voltmeter Apart from the voltmeter, each requires a sensor as well I pulled apart the clock on the FR-S though and no great way to adapt this board with out hacking up the clock, which actually is quite reasonable price wise from Toyota/Subaru so not the end of the world if destroyed. The easiest way would be to mod the passenger side of the clock assembly and get rid of the seat belt and passenger air bag idiot lights but again making this a clean install is not an easy task. But maybe someone more adventurous would like to do it. I also looked at the cubby hole under the ac controls and the board will fit nicely if we can get a piece of tinted plexiglass to look right in that spot... we are experimenting with that now and ill post up some pics when done. The design was done for turbo mr2 guys so not all of these sensors apply to the FR-S, unless you are boosted :D We would entertain the thought of doing a group buy on one designed for the FR-S/BRZ if we had 25 people willing to do the buy... if anyone is interested pm me and I will start a new thread so as to not clutter this one. (attn mods: not really trying to solicit business unless we can actually make something look good enough that we would be willing to sell... mainly trying to throw out an idea, I can edit or delete part of this post if it offends anyone) |
^That lower cubby hole is not the same on all the cars. In my BRZ Ltd, there's just enough room to stuff my iPod nano and the wound-up cord due to the push-start button on the left. I haven't been in a Premium, so I can't say if it's the same as the FRS.
I wouldn't mind doing away with the clock...if I could figure out how to see the time on the damn NAV unit! There's a clock on/off mode in settings, but I'll be damned if I can find where it's displayed. |
is their a glove box option
|
Haha wow old thread. Not sure if they're made specifically for this car, but I've seen people mount triple pods in the glove box on several cars.
|
I would like to hide them
