Carbon Fiber dash like a BMW? (pictures of M3 carbon fiber interior included)
I would love to have my FR-S or BRZ have the kind of dash seen in this BMW M3. What is the best way to do it? Wrap? Or can this be purchased?
Check out this awesome BMW interior. (But I wouldn't want to pay for it!) http://www.m3post.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1277001049 http://www.m3post.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1280912139 http://www.m3post.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1280912139 |
You buy probably buy the vinyl and wrap it.
The one in M3 = OEM, it's not a wrap if I remember correctly |
3M Di-Noc.
|
If I remember correctly, it's actually woven leather.
|
That is carbon fiber textured leather. You can find rolls of it on eBay and places like that. Just get a very thin pad and spray glue it on there.
|
If you look around there's pictures of cars where people either wrapped their trim with carbon fiber-style vinyl and also where they overlaid pieces with real carbon fiber cloth and resin. Personally, I want to do the cloth-and-resin treatment to the stereo surround and dash trim piece. Looks so good!!

forget wrapping, im looking to spend few hundreds to get the real cf dash when its released
|
This is 3M Dinoc vinyl in matte finish. They make it in gloss too if you prefer that. I haven't gotten around to doing the rest just yet but the two main pieces are done.

I never knew the M3 had dual-color stitched steering wheel. Freaking love it.
Di-noc would be the cheapest way to go, and it's pretty easy to work with. Real dry carbon will cost an arm, maybe a leg as well. |
I personally prefer the UFO's to fake carbon. Somehow knowing it's not really replicating a carbon weave makes me feel less ricer. :/
What would be awesome is to take a mold of the stock parts and recreate them in 100% real carbon with an in mold gel coat. That I'd be onboard with. Nathan |
We only talking like what 3 pieces? It can't be that expensive to get it all in real carbon fiber.

Oh, wow. Didn't even notice that. Automatically thought it was full carbon because of the insane price tags. What a rip.

Here's what I ordered today, but the Real black carbon fiber color. Cheap and nice.

I saw someone on here did the same thing with the 3M vinyl and it worked out surprisingly well, he did the steering wheel trim, heater vents, and the shifter surround if I recall correctly. I like this approach, done by doggy: http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...r/IMG_1194.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...r/IMG_1195.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...r/IMG_1196.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...r/IMG_1197.jpg The faux carbon trim on the dash is just vinyl and comes off, in case anyone didn't know... |

Looks fuckin awesome doggy!
I'm jam! |
Yeah doggy, that is pretty damn sexy looking. I like you style as well with the gt86.
|
If you want a real carbon fiber overlay, you can get Hasepro Magical Carbon. Costs more though since it's from Japan.
|
that looks slick! thoroughly impressed!

Wow! Very nicely done, Doggy! Any chance I could pay you to do the same for mine? ;)
I'm kind of curious what that piece would look like in silver carbon fiber.. |
Doggy, how many coat of gloss did you put on it?
|
Ussualy i finish CF up with 600grit. Sand down the form out with 150, then apply light coat with soft brush of resin over the piece - let it dry out and finish up with 600grit. After this - 2/3 coats of HS clear with spraygun. I do not count how much layers - just use my eyes to see if all surface is even :)
Here are 2 more pieces: http://sphotos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/hphoto...08206500_n.jpg |
Overload IMHO, but it could look great in real life.
|
@doggy, any issues with sun glare? That's my only concern with putting such glossy parts inside the car....

did you read somewhere that they are releasing a carbon fiber dash,,,? |

Would be great if this trim could be made with a narrower head unit hole that fits standard aftermarket double din units better.

I am 90% sure that is all just carbon look on OEM parts |
