prepping for winter

Unfortunately, the FRS is my DD and only car so sadly, its gonna have to last this winter. What can i do to minimize salt damage or steps to take to make RWD less ridiculous in the snow. wider wheels? chains? idk

Narrow wheels. Get Ice + Snow rated tires. Michelin X-Ice 3 = awesome.

Make sure you have winter-spec washer fluid in the car. Make sure your wiper blades are good.

If you're using a heavier oil - switch back to 0w20 or 0w30.

Wash your car and rinse the under-body regularly.

so the stock 7" rims are sufficient?

Synack 09-25-2012 02:56 PM

Thanks for reminding me why we left Michigan 40 years ago.

On a little more serious note, Ziebart was a big thing when we lived there. That or a product like that could prolong the life of your car considerably.

Am I the only one with a frs that is excited about winter?

I have a love hate relationship with winter. Edge of my seat driving in traffic with snow due to fear of someone sliding into me. Relaxing bliss through the snow when alone in parking lots :)

I've driven RWD vehicle with no traction control, limited diff, and just all season tires for years - through LOTS of snow. I had a RWD truck in northern NJ I'd drive in the snow on all seasons when I was 17.

Here's a tip - since the car came with summer tires, buy a set of winter tires on a second set of rims (steelies?) and just use care. You'll be fine. Drive slower, leave extra room for braking. You might even *gasp* find the car more fun in the snow!

If there were no other stupid drivers on the roads I would be excited as well. Problem is that we have the idiots in 4500lb SUV's that think AWD means they can drive as fast as they want until it comes time to stop.

Also looking forward to the winter. Excited about how the car handles on winter roads :party0030:

I'll just make sure I'll have the paint sealed with some nice wax/conservartion and then I'll just wash it often. And ofc a set of good friction winter tires.
Here in Sweden they basically cover the roads with roadsalt in the winter to get rid of all the ice which makes the car dirty as hell.

I enjoy a good drive when it is snowing out.

You may not like them, but MUDFLAPS. They will keep a lot of salt off the side of your car.

dem00n 09-25-2012 06:03 PM

No one said turn on the Snow button and pray? :bellyroll:

Check out Nokian tires, going to order some for the FRS. Wash it if you can or even dare i say...take it to a car wash if anyone are open.

In all fairness it's not salt on the side of your car that causes the problems. It's the salt under your car and in all the impossible places to get to that it does its evil work.

whateatsrabbits 09-25-2012 07:30 PM

I put my cars up on a lift and throughly power wash the undercarriage a couple times a winter.

Celica00 09-25-2012 07:54 PM

Haha whateatsrabbits I love that you put your car up on a lift but your sig says never lift! anyways as far as salt corrosion goes, just a thorough once a month cleaning of the under carriage will be good?

Leonardo 09-25-2012 08:03 PM

I have had several sets of winter tires. The Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 is my favorite I've had. Comes in our size. I like that it gives amazing grip in ice and snow while being very quiet. (compared to other studded tires I've had) My $0.02...

yormaX 09-25-2012 10:10 PM

Take the bus to work and school if you have to!

make sure you flush the car with lots of water especially underneath! try to find a car wash that DOESN'T use recycled water! use "dedicated
snow tires and you should be fine!

no! not thorough enough! ya need to do it every week! i run mine through "touch-free!"

Bristecom 09-26-2012 04:43 AM

If you are planning to drive it through snow fairly often, I would recommend 205/55/16 Michelin X-Ice 3 tires. You could even try importing the 86/BRZ 16 inch wheels. But keep in mind that it will make the car a lot less responsive on tarmac.

DjDATZ 09-26-2012 10:53 AM

I'm planning on probably using mine in the winter, but not as a DD.

Unfortunately, mine is going to be stored outside so I'd prefer being able to use a car cover. Anyone know where I might be able to find one for my baby?

Subarupartsonline.com

You can get the OEM one

Double4Free 09-26-2012 10:31 PM

Will the OEM rims be alright in the wintertime? I was thinking of using those in the winter and throwing on some nicer ones for the summer. What do you all think?

That is my plan. They will be fine.
