__First track day in my FR-S__

Went to Putnam Park Raceway this past Saturday. First time pushing the car on the new setup. Was so fun pulling higher HP cars and getting on their butts in corners. Car took everything I could throw at it, ran a best lap of 1:26. Here's some vids...

Then I had some fun with a friend that went with us, his first track day and he got pretty good towards the end. He kept wanting me to pass but I wanted to get some vid so he could check out his lines...

Wow, absolutely beautiful lines. Great job man. I love to see you keeping up with the Viper and S2K on corners. Let them pull away from you in the straights, you'll catch up in the corners. The only criticism is to get on the throttle earlier in the exit of the turns. Push your car to the edge of the road during exits to get the highest speeds possible. But other than that, you are driving like a pro. I can't wait to see you get some performance increases for the straights. You'll be kicking ass soon.

bimmerboy 09-24-2012 09:42 PM

looking good. what suspension are you on? also that software is pretty cool. I felt like I was watching a forza 4 replay!

NYC BRZ 09-24-2012 09:44 PM

What wheels are those? The car looks awesome!!

Thanks! That was only my second time on a track. The S2k was a friend that went with me, his first time on the track. I had no problem passing him (did it plenty times that day), just followed him for a while for fun.

I'm on BC Racing coilovers. The app is Harry's Lap Timer Pro and it is awesome! $20 well spent!

Sweet!!! Thanks for posting man.

Sigh-on-Rice 09-24-2012 11:37 PM

Nice vids. Had fun watching them. :)

NESW20 09-25-2012 12:46 AM

I'm actually planning on running the 10/10ths track day on Oct 13th up at Putnam. It'd be awesome to see you out there for it! Nice driving. :)

I'll be in my MR2, btw.

Bristecom 09-25-2012 01:05 AM

Very cool, man! I'll probably take the FR-S out there next summer.

BTW, were you on stock brake pads and discs? If so, how did they do? It doesn't look like a particularly hard braking course...

Vladror 09-25-2012 01:18 AM

awesome stuff, wanted to take my car to the track for the first time this past weekend but it rained so hard i decided to wait for the next track day.
these vids are inspiring though :)

bmxbandit 09-25-2012 01:24 AM

awesome videos! loved watching you run down that viper (that is my dream car). that app you found is pretty neat as well.

looks like you are getting good seat time. the 2 tracks i have around me that i'm trying to get to are Virginia International Raceway and Carolina Motorsports Park. Both offer beginner classes with four 30 minute on track driving sessions with classroom instruction in between.

track_warrior 09-25-2012 01:31 AM

Great job keeping the car straight when going off track!! Nice videos man. What data logger are you using?

twincamRob 09-25-2012 08:33 PM

Thanks guys!

I'd love to but don't think I could pull it off, going on vacation in Oct. and need some cash for that. Have fun out there!

Stock pads, braided brake lines and ATE super blue fluid. Probly could have used a bleed towards the end but held up good.

That's the Harry's Lap Timer Pro app on my iphone, works awesome! Here's some data from the lap timer, this is my fastest lap. I can look at every lap of the day like this and also on a spreadsheet.

philstar 09-25-2012 09:35 PM

i cant stop staring at your car!!!!! I love it!

F3dzo 09-25-2012 10:17 PM

Hey how much did you pay for a track day like that? In south Florida it's mostly with a company that rents the track down in homestead FL.

Rampage 09-25-2012 11:12 PM

But but but this car is soooo slow. It takes over 6 seconds to go from 0-60 mph!

/sarcasm

No roll bar in that s2000? Did not think there were any tracks that did not require them in non fixed top cars. Surely they do not consider those factory style bars as real rollover protection?

TemeCal 09-25-2012 11:26 PM

Great videos! Were you using 2 different cameras? iPhone and GoPro? How did you have them mounted?

GTM_Challenge 09-27-2012 01:06 AM

This is honestly my favorite FRS that I've seen. A 1:26 isn't too shabby either. I was supposed to come down in the Miata or the S2000 for that 10/10ths event, but can't make it. There should be a white s2000 out there with a big wing and a carbon top, or a nice blue miata with a blue soft top out there - try and keep up with him for me :)

twincamRob 09-27-2012 05:25 AM

Thanks guys!

Same kinda deal hear, Torqued Motorsports was the group that put this on. I think I paid $230. Well worth it with all the classes and plenty of track time!

Yea we were concerned about that, the track site said no convertibles unless they pass the broomstick test. My friend emailed and asked if 'stock' S2000's were allowed and they said something along the lines of 'new convertibles are stronger, that rule was meant for older convertibles'. I dunno, we didn't argue lol.

Yea Gopro and iPhone with basic suction cup mounts. The phone was on my windshield under the rearview.

Thanks, I was more than happy with how the car did out there. It held in the corners so good. I was real sore the next day, thought I had the flu cause my whole body ached lol. I saw the S2000 you were talking about, looked good! Only saw him run a couple times, super quiet car!

A seat and some harness would really help on track, but would be somewhat of a pain to DD in. Look into a product called the CG Lock - it locks the waist belt of the stock seatbelt to help hold you in place. Makes a big difference.

And the white s2000 is pretty basic. Its got Ohlins suspension, a test pipe, camber joints up front, and that big wing and good tires. Same recipe I'd likely use for an FRS/BRZ to be honest.

That car took 2nd at NASA Nationals last year at Mid-Ohio. The owner/drivers name is Aaron and he specialize in suspension and chassis set up. He's down in Louisville. If you're interested in contacting him to see what he can do for you and helping you set the car up, shoot me a message.

The guy is an absolute wizard. I had been having handling issues in my TT S2000 all season. I talked to him for 5 minutes and he knew exactly what the issue was and how to fix it! He's a great guy too. If you see him on the 13th, stop by and chat. Tell him Austin with the red TT s2000 told you to say hey. I'm sure he'll want to check your car out.

twincamRob 09-27-2012 08:04 PM

A seat and harnesses would be awesome but the car is my daily, so doubt I'll do it.

That S2000 (and owner) sound awesome! My friend talked to him for a sec I think. I shoulda checked out the car more. I used to have an S2k myself...

Very nice!

This is the racecar here at the shop:

And one of our employees cars before he started working for us:

Oddly enough, both cars may be swapped out for FRS / BRZ in the near future

Very nice. So all of the vids fro the dash with the lap info in it was shot on an iphone. Awesome!

I have an app called TrackMaster that works the same way. Didn't cost $20 bucks though.

Jeff86 09-28-2012 12:38 PM

Nice runs! Your car looks great and performs great. Loving you reeling them in on the curves!

colHolm 09-28-2012 12:39 PM

So I assume you are enjoying the wheel/tire setup?

DarkSunrise 09-28-2012 12:45 PM

Awesome, I liked the lines you chose on the track. Also nice license plate on the s2k :D

The video of your little "off" says to me you have natural talent, calmness under crisis and/or plenty of previous experience.

You entered too fast, set 2 off on the outside which begun rotation and you kept the momentum in check, the balance under control and calmly drove it into the grass on the other side with very little steering input.

I can't tell you how many people would have:
1: Two feet in'd
2: over-counter-steered leading to a spin
3: lifted
4: yanked the wheel and lifted.

Great job, great video and thanks for sharing.

Driving a snap-happy AP1 S2k helped get a feel for the 'edge'. Never tracked it though just autox. Also done a small amount of drifting with an S14 I built... http://zilvia.net/f/chat/365706-misf...fun-build.html Thread starts a little off track with some history...

I was following a BRZ for a little while and he was all over the place trying to figure out how I was staying on his back bumper. Guess he almost put it in the wall at one point at the last corner.

I like your car! We had ours out at Putnam last weekend for some awesome fun.

Your lap looks pretty good. I don't have the raw data from some of mine, but I was running low 1:22's in ours. I was running about 108/109 down the end of the front straight which probably helped my times. I think 9-10 combo I sustained 65 in the upper section and about 74 turning in for 10 which is where I'm sure that extra straight speed came from. Any more track events planned?

Thanks!

1:22 :eyebulge: That's awesome!

There was definitely more left in my car in the corners but that was only my second track day and I already felt like I was pushing the car pretty hard, it is my daily after all lol!

Planning on hitting Putnam as much as possible next year as I am very comfortable with the lack of walls there. Would like to try another track at some point although I'll probly be a little more conservative.

Was you there when the Porsche GT crashed? http://jalopnik.com/5951945/porsche-...ace-track-gods

Would you say the BC coilovers are worth it? Quality wise as well as performance wise.

We digitized Putnam a few years back at my old software company for use in simulation. I've never been to Putnam, but I have been around the track about 1.7 million times, lol. For your first track day, you were on it! Nice job sir!

I've had Tein Basics on an S13, Tein Flex on an S2k, Stance on an S14 and BC's on an E36 M3. For the most part they all feel about the same except I'd say you can actually feel changes in the dampening setting more on the BC's. Was wanting to get a set of Fortunes for this car but was too impatient. But to answer your question, definitely worth the money. I'm not a fan of coilovers that don't have adjustable shock height, just spring height, like KW's fwiw...

See above. As far as I know they only have the one 'line' for our car.
