Best and cheap track wheels in 17x8

I'm pretty bummed the stock wheel is only 17x7. Because of that I've decided to set them aside for a rainy day instead of mounting sticky tires on them.

What wheels do you all recommend for a cheap track set? I don't care about tearing these up, hence = cheap.

The BRZ isn't a particularly heavy car so Rotas, XXRs, and others are not off the table. Was also thinking of picking up a set from the STi guys but I've come to learn that the 5x100 BBS Sti wheels are rare and $$. Any help would be appreciated!

Can we please not make these another cheap wheel debate? I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

JimmyMac 09-24-2012 01:27 AM

Define cheap? What about Kosei K4R? $199 a pop. Very light and affordable.

crimespree 09-24-2012 02:56 AM

Enkei RPF1?

JoeBoxer 09-24-2012 03:52 AM

TSW Trackstar 5 17x8 +35 i can't seem to track down the weight on it but i thought they were pretty light and i know somebody that can get them for you ;) i'll keep looking for others also. What's your budget on this set feel free to text me or pm and we can find you another set. Are you happy with your 530's for street use?

I just looked into these. Great recommendation. I didn't know they existed. Thanks!

This would be my default set but they're a bit more than I wanted to spend but for good wheels I may pony up. The problem is.. they aren't the most BBK friendly so i'll wait to see how people on here have accomondated for BBKs on the RPF1s.

The 530s have been great so far! Just what I wanted. Not too heavy and pretty versatile in the looks dept. I won't feel so bad curbing these when i'm coming home from work at 10pm after a long day lol. Thanks very much for your help with them!

Will keep on searching a bit more for "track" wheels. Maybe I can find a set of take-offs from a newer WRX. If the TSWs aren't too expensive I'd be down.

In widths below 9", The 17" RPF1s are convex and quite BBK friendly, at least in 5x114.3 sizes. FD RX-7s can run 17x8 +35 or +45 and 17x8.5 +40 RPF1s with StopTechs according to my info (RX7club and Enkei). S2000 is tight with the 17x8 +45, apparently needs 2-3mm spacers for reasonable clearance, while the +35 and 8.5" +40 clear (multiple S2ki.com threads).

Motegi MR125 are 17x7.5 5x100 +42 and weigh 16.3 lbs

about $700 for a set of 4

I think this is the best deal for $ to lbs ratio... and they look pretty good too

here is a link http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/Wheel...All&sort=Brand

this is likely what I will go with for my raven

$634 shipped if you take off the install kit and valve stems, i can't even beat that price i still can't find a weight though.

MmmHamSandwich 09-24-2012 03:05 PM

What JimmyMac said. K4R's are light and cheap.

Those are pretty nice. Modbargains sells them too. Maybe they can get a weight.

that's what I found too, but it was a different offset wheel. So I was looking for something more accurate. Love those wheels though. Would just like to know which TSW wheel in that size/offset is the lightest.

RYU 09-24-2012 03:57 PM

Thanks much guys!

I'd totally be willing to loose an inch in width if it meant dropping say .5-1.5lb in weight. Though I can't go much skinnier than 8" width. 7-7.5" just leaves for such a limited tire width selection.

RAYSSPL 09-24-2012 04:13 PM

enkei rpf1. amazing wheels at a good price point.

diirk 09-24-2012 05:17 PM

So what's the recommended and/or widest tire for an 8" wide wheel?
I'm guessing a 235/45-17 or 245-40/17?

hyper4mance 09-24-2012 05:48 PM

17x8, 235/45 is a popular choice. I believe 235 is the widest recommended for 8"

dori. 09-24-2012 08:16 PM

I would say the 5zigen FN01R but I don't think they're made anymore and I also don't know if they're in 5x100

I run 245/40/18 on my Z which uses 8" wide stock rims, but I have seen 255s squeezed on their as well.

I'm running 255 star specs on 17x8 rpf1s. No complaints, but I'll go 245 next time to see if it makes a difference.

BAE 09-24-2012 10:06 PM

RPF1's are stronger than Kosei. I have heard more about damaged Kosei's in the Miata world. I think the RPF1's are worth the extra $20-30/ wheel compared to Kosei.

hankster 09-24-2012 11:09 PM

Load capacity of the Kosei is 1190 lbs
Load capacity of the Enkei is over 1500 lbs

zkubidu 09-25-2012 12:47 AM

IIRC, the RPF1's are stronger than Kosei's as BAE said, however keep in mind the strength of these wheels will not be as with stock or stronger forged wheels. They're still a cast wheel, although not a conventional cast, and thus would still be prone to cracking if severely stressed.

I'm really digging these. I'm looking for a temp wheel for right now and these might do the trick till summer time. Thanks for posting them up.

RYU 09-25-2012 12:12 PM

Has anyone had success mounting 235s on a 7" wheel?

I'm considering doing this with the stockers to hold me off for this season. It's not my optimal choice for the long term but would love to hear some success stories if you guys have got any.

Thanks!

Turbowned 09-25-2012 04:30 PM

Widest I'd put on a 7" wheel is 225, I dunno man.

It certainly isn't optimal, but there are guys doing it for autocrossing in stock classes where you're required to keep the stock sized wheel. Works a little better with R-comps, for a street tire you'd want something with a really stiff sidewall.

Cheap track wheels = Rota. Good luck!

I thought Rota had wheel failure issues? They may have corrected the issue, but I'd hate to have a wheel fail on track in the fashion I remember from old pictures of Rotas.

I think they had some batch issues years ago, but the thing about Rotas is that they are very popular because of the price, so naturally there are more out there to fail.

anectodally, I don't know anyone whose Rota's have failed on them.

nope, any failed wheel would have been caused by some sort of impact

Rota wheels are used on MANY track cars, including 600+HP GST Motorsports, Snail Performance, UMS Tuning, LIC Motorsports, and a lot more time attack cars that go off course once in a while too

Any of them will vouch for Rotas.

A good track wheel is the new Rota Grid 2, 17x8 +38mm offset, perfect for this car if you're looking for a 17x8 wheel

What are the lightest Rota wheels in 17x8 and 17x9?

Ah this is the 17X8+38 your talking about. I like it, it would look great on my Asphalt FR-S...

17x9 DPT's are 19lbs, that is the lightest 17x9 wheel we have.

17x8 DPT's are 18.2lbs, that is the lightest 17x8 wheel we have.

What's the next lightest wheel?

(The thin spokes on the DPT kinda scare me.. :))
