Should I buy an FR-S?
Hey, everybody. Sorry if this thread has been made before or whatever, but I have to ask. I am supposed to go pick up my brand new Whiteout FR-S tomorrow at a dealership in MO. But I'm reading about all these problems with the FR-S that are truly scaring me. The idle dip, the CEL, etc etc...I'm getting into this car because I was looking for a pleasant and reliable daily driver in place of my less reliable previous vehicle.
Should I pass up on the FR-S?:iono: |
No dont pass up, i got no issues. There is about 100 people with issues, how many cars did they sell?
|
1k miles and no problems
Hopefully no problems at all |

I was hoping I wouldn't have to skip on it, but reading the problems threads make me very nervous. Is the problem associated with any specific series of VINs?
|
Get it!
Just make sure to talk to your dealer about what they can do for your IF your car ends up in their service department, have them re-assure you that if ANYTHING goes wrong they will back their product. |

2600 miles and no problems, love this car!
|
I wonder if the dealers will provide loaner cars if the FRS goes into warranty service?
|
2,500 miles, no maintenance, foot always on the floor, no problems. :) I treat this car just like I treated my 350z, so it must be bulletproof!
|
Approaching 5k miles on my FR-S, and no major problems so far... Of course, I'll continue to keep my fingers crossed.
Usually people get more nervous right when they're about to get married... I think I've witnessed more folks get nervous on pulling the trigger on a car lately, instead... :bellyroll: |
7500 miles without issue on the BRZ. Just be careful what you leave in the car. There's a long lead time on replacement glass.
|
Mine was in the shop for 24 days, and I'm still satisfied with the car. As soon as I hit 1k miles last week... oil change, suspension, tune, and the following day beat the piss out of it at a PDX event. :)
|
5000 KM, no problems thus far. Only issue ive got is the rear deck popping, but im gonna fix that this week... Been busy with a research project, and i dont have a proper punch to fix it yet.

And it's probably not a good practice to determine the reliability of a car based on a bunch of hammerheads posting to car forums... |

To OP. I understand why you're worried. I would be too if I were to buy one now. If you're worried, then you should wait for a few more months. I think CEL is a serious issue, Toyota is taking it seriously, and it probably will be solved soon. Then you will be able to get one with no worry and just be excited and enjoy the car. |

There are way more cars without issues than with. Like thousands without and a hundred or more with. I would not pass with those odds.
|
I'm at 4,000 miles on my BRZ. No issues at all. Got my car on June 15th.

I'm with some of the other posters here- you shouldn't make your decision based on "problem" threads on an internet forum. I've purchased 3 cars since internet car forums became a big deal, and all have had such threads on specific items. On my last car, '02 Sentra SER, there was much hullabaloo about oil consumption and transmission problems, but I and many others never experienced such trouble, not that there weren't cars that had them, but it was apparently a small percentage given the reputation for reliability these cars have over time.
The FR-s is marketed by an extremely reputable company with a history of standing behind their products. If you have a problem, I have no doubt that Toyota will fix it. I owned a Toyota pickup once that had the paint start to peel off of the primer after the first year (I think warranties were only a year then), and they repainted the entire cab totally free, even though the truck was technically out of warranty. With the warranties on the FR-s, I think you should decide based on what you like about the car, not the negative comments posted on this or any other forum. If you don't accept this, go to a few other car forums and see if you can find one that doesn't have problem threads, and you will see what I mean. If you made your decision based on this factor, you'd by a bicycle instead. |
Don't buy one until they fix the CEL and chirping problems. Why deal with the potential headace?
|
I hear peoples concern. But the car is solid. Every release is going to have just a few issues. But seriously, the FR-S and BRZ are nearly identical great cars made by Subaru with a splash of Toyota.
|
All this time, and I still don't have the car :P I have been waiting for it to show up at the dealership and now that it's there its throwing a check engine light, and supposedly running rich. Woohooo....

I'd go for it. Worst case scenario, it will be covered by warranty and will just cause minor inconvenience of having to wait to get it fixed.
|
I decided I'm still going to go pick it up. They said I could bring it back during this following business week to fix the issue.

Congrats man! :coolpics:
I have had my FRS now for almost 4 months with 4500 miles on it and not a single major issue. I do have some rattling issues I intend to bring up, and the idle chrip sound, but thats it. |
