Best Exhaust for turbo application
 

Hello!

I just wanna know which exhaust is better for turbo application. For the moment i just want an axle back until i install the turbo kit and the rest of the exhaust pipes (over pipe, mid pipe, etc).

Axlebacks wont do much if anything so you could just get one that sounds good for the time being and get a full system once you get your turbo kit.

Nameless needs to get on the ball and make a full 3inch header back piece by piece like they do for the WRX/STI.Seems like a million people are going to boost this car. Every piece can be bought one at a time or a package like catback/headerback exc exc.

a full exhaust. all of them will perform the same. just get one you prefer.

I think the largest diameter pipe right now is the GReddy Evo 3 at 2.75 inches. In my experience with other Turbo 4's of similar displacement and power, 3 inch systems were preferred.

Take a good look at Nameless, quality is top notch and the engineering design was well thought. (They also have a groupbuy right now for they Axleback $50 off just FYI).

About size, Don@Accelerated performance has said time and time again, that up to 300 whp the stock exhaust was not a restriction and that on their current 460 whp setup, a 2.5" system is not a restriction either so think about that too. IMHO 2.5" is good enough.

also i dont what the exhaust to be to exotic looking or to loud..cops down here in Puerto Rico love to give tickets to people with aftermarket exhaust..so i need one that more stealthy looking jajaja

yeah.. when i had my STI i would get exhaust tickets just cruising in the highway..its crazy down here..

I had a N/A civic, with 3" full, no CAT exhaust.. it was obviously extremely loud, and just like you there was no hiding it, even cruising it was super loud.

3" off the downpipe to overpipe is what we want. after that, it came taper down and be fine. as long as it's not restricted at the downpipe.

for FI you will want the straightest, most free-flowing exhaust out there, preferably 3" in diameter.. Freed engineerings exhaust looks like the best as of yet, as well as the SRT catback.


Also to people who say a certain diameter exhaust is not a restriction, you never know what HP you can gain until you actually switch to a larger diameter exhaust.. So when xxxx tuner says 2.5" is not a restriction, that's just because they haven't tested a 3" back to back.. To my knowledge there isn't a 3" exhaust out yet for this car, feel free to prove me wrong if I missed it..

^ agreed. Also the SP elite is an axleback. Though I agree it sounds good, I don't think it should be mentioned here.

The stock exhaust might not be a restriction but like bimmerboy said, that doesn't mean there aren't gains to be had with a more free flowing and bigger exhaust. I'll be picking up the evo3 and i'm hoping it won't be too loud lol

3" straight-through style is best. Those single inlet dual opposite outlet mufflers are no good for turbo.

Me personally, I would buy a single exit muffler that I thought sounded good, then go to a exhaust shop and have them make the straightest 3" piping from the turbo to the muffler.

if your running no more then 10psi i would go with a 2.5" turboback exhaust.

For turbo, the best exhaust is NO exhaust (figuratively speaking). Make it as short as possible, with proper diameter piping. The turbo spools based on a pressure differential between volute pressure and outlet pressure. So 3" systems will give better response and quicker spool than a comparable 2.5" setup.

But there are compromises we all make concerning sound, emissions legality, safety etc. I would go full 3" on a turbo. It won't be quiet, but with the right muffler setup it won't be too bad. The turbo soaks up a lot of noise as well. Bonus of having a turbo.

2.5 should be sufficient. But ultimately i'd like to run a 3>2.5 bellmouth off the turbo to at least the overpipe.

I just heard that there's a good vendor on this site that may be working on a 3" exhaust for the frs in the future, but they're just waiting to see how the turbo options on the market are when they hit production stages.

Also, if they aren't impressed or comfortable working with the kits as designed, they may develop a kit of their own. And i'm sure it would be beautiful! :drool:

I'll leave it up to them to make any sort of official post about it though... All i know is that i'm not going to rush into buying a overpipe/downpipe, or midpipe anytime soon!
