Tyres

I know there are tire posts elsewhere, I wanted a tyre post because Aussie conditions and choice are different.

I'm interested to know what tyres people are running or going to run.

More information is better - brand and model of course, but also size. Price you paid/expect to pay and then any other information - personally I'm interested in minimal road noise, but others might want to know about comfort, stickiness, weight etc.

I've always liked Michelins and am considering Pilot Sport PS2's - had them on my boxster. The new PS3's look interesting but don't know anyone who's tried them. The PS2's run about $320 a wheel for 235/40/18's. PS3's are about the same.

nzer 09-11-2012 04:56 AM

The TRD version here in NZ comes with Michelin Pilot Sport 3 225/40/18 so that's what I'm going with.

Nafe 09-11-2012 05:05 AM

I will most likely go with Bridgestone Potenza Adrenalin RE002s when I get my wheels. I have a Gt, and will be going 17's. Will stick with GTS size of 25/45/17.
They are about $325or so each, but I will be paying MUCH less than that.
I'd consider maybe getting a set of 215/50/16 semi slicks for the standard wheels too. The 21's will be a bit wide on a 6.5in rim, but semi's have stiffer sidewalls anyway.

Keen on finding out more about much less - can you hook us up? Group Buy?

ZZT86 09-11-2012 05:32 AM

Potenza Adrenalin RE002 are GREAT ! I have them on my Celica ZR which has the bigger Sportivo wheels which are exactly the same size as the ones on the GTS, the 215/45/17's cost me $850 for 4 inc 4 wheel alignment from my local tyre pro in Melbourne about 6 months ago.

Excellent tyre, very quiet, grippy (probably too much grip), great directional stability & precision in dry & wet and if the RE001 are anything to go by then they will also last a very long time, depending on how you drive of course !

I LOVE the Potenzas & highly recommend them :))

PS: @ Nafe - where did you get that price from?

Raz555 09-11-2012 05:49 AM

I'm thinking of some Yokohama ADVAN Neova AD08's when I get my 86. Will be doing a number of track days and the 86 won't be my daily drive. May go same size as GTS stock tyres or one step wider, depending on what wheels I go for.

Saying that I will take it to the track on the stock tyres first so I can compare the difference.

Btw AD08's are a bit noisey I'm told, so may not be great for a daily drive only car.

They are awesome tyres... then you have A050 (semis) which is in a league of their own ;)

I'll be getting some AD08's as well
not sure on how noisy is too noisy for you but compared to KU36 and RE001 then they aren't as noisy from my experience
KU36 noise was the worse by far and I can hear them over my titanium exhaust and all other sorts of noises from my previous car

only thing is that if you want fun on the roads where the car is a bit tail happy , then changing to high performance tyres will not make it as fun

Captain Snooze 09-11-2012 06:44 AM

Yoko AD08 for street and Kuhmo V70A for track.

I won't get expensive rubber when the Prius tyres wear out.

000 Racing 09-11-2012 07:05 AM

Toyo Proxes R888 should cost you about $1200-1300 if you look around. 235/40 18
They are CAMS approved for production cars but road legal. They are good for track and grip like hell on a road. Given that Perth does not rain like the Eastern States all the better as they have a low void (cut out sections) Typical R Spec are more track than road so wet weather driving can be tentative.. Hey just a thought though..

Taleb Tyres do the best Sydney price.. oh and I have used them on the VE HSV (1780kg) at Eastern Creek (245/40 18) they performed well but not like a set of Dunlop Direzza D03 or Yokohama A050's...

Good luck... and hope this helps

I would never use Kuhmo V70A's ever again.. had too many failures
They bubble on the side walls and get surface de-lamination..
I have seen them fail on light Protons GTI's to Commodores... don't get me wrong.. they grip up well until they fail or are a throw out after one race round.. others may have differing views but I do not race with anyone that will use them..

Wow, that is VERY cheap!! Your tyre dealer made very little profit on those tyres ;) Unless he purchased something like 200 of them,
The retail price comes straight from Bridgestone. I am an authorised bridgestone dealer and was logged into the Bridgestone Aust ordering/warehouse website at the time I posted. The list price is $324.60ea :)

@Z86 - happy to help out members with pricing, but I am in Brisbane :P

Yumcha 09-11-2012 07:22 AM

I'm with Nafe & ZZT86 on this one
Bridgestone RE002 FTW

Yeah, he is a high volume seller, and that's his usual price for that sort of tyre/size. Have known him for a long time, he's great !

Also a fan of Dunlop & Yokohama road tyres but in recent memory the Potenzas out perform them, at least for me & my lightly modified Celica.

blags 09-11-2012 08:58 AM

Looking for tyre at the moment.

KU36, pretty decent grip and lasted as expected (10-12thou on a r33)
Toyo R1R, much better than KU36 for a cheaper price. Last similar to KUs

Looking at possibly trying the RSR's next. Other options are Nitto NT05 or Hankook RS3s but can't find anyone in Aus with the latter.

os86 09-11-2012 09:27 AM

Have tried several tyres , for street I recommend federal 595 rsr and proxes r888 for track use.

Keeping price in mind offcourse

SXE10 09-12-2012 01:17 AM

Potenza RE002 are good value for money but if you want real grip look at Michelin PS3 or Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2. I have the latter on my car & they're phenomenal

LineNoise 09-12-2012 09:56 AM

Driven a GT with AD08s on 17x8.0" RPF1s. In my opinion they might be a little too sticky for the stock suspension.

I'm weirdly considering going to a 17x8.0" wheel but then sticking Primacys back on it, at least for road use.

I wonder how well the stock tyres will stretch over 17x8's myself. Pretty sure it is pushing the limits a bit

LineNoise 09-12-2012 10:15 AM

Yeah, I'd need to go up to 225 or 235. I think you *can* do it in theory but it's not the right size.

Nafe 09-12-2012 09:00 PM

215s are not a stretch on 8in rims at all. a 215 tyre is 215mm and an 8in rim is 200mm. 205 will fit comfortably on an 8. Its not "the norm", but its no issue.

os86 09-12-2012 09:24 PM

I would like to get some feedback from tyre experts on sizing as to what will be the best size for maximum grip on a 9" / 9.5" wide rim on the rear end.

Would a 265/35 fit without rubbing or compromising on handling characteristics.

coyote 09-12-2012 09:45 PM

It should fit fine on a wheel with around a 45mm offset, but is pretty pointless unless you're making more than 300hp.

Nafe 09-12-2012 10:14 PM

^^ Agreed on being pointless unless you have alot more power.
Why do you want a tyre that wide? It really isn't necessary with the weight of the car and the power it produces. A 225 or 235 will be sufficient. A 235 could also go on a 9in rim without stretch, but a 225 will be a little stretch. Otherwise an 8.5in rim.

Thanks Coyote and Nafe,

I do have plans to add boost and the car will be at the track once a month, and maximum grip is the priority as the stock setup will break traction at those levels.

I am thinking 17s would be best to start off with a 245/40 tyre plus.

Nafe 09-12-2012 10:54 PM

Fair enough if you are going boost, but still think a 245 would be sufficient with well set up suspension and good tyres.
For what it’s worth I will be tracking mine reasonably regularly with 215’s (not the stock Michelins), but I am not planning to boost at all.

Not many tyre choices over 255 in a 17. I'm the last person to push big wheels, but if you want to go wide, 18s are a better bet.

Nardi330 09-13-2012 03:35 AM

i am going to run 245 on my 9.5 (at the back). should be a good compromise.

Kenno 09-13-2012 09:41 AM

I was going to get Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2's, but Beaurepairs quoted me $438/tyre for 225/40/R18 on the front, and $698/tyre for 245/35/R18 on the rear....yes, that's nearly $700 A TYRE on the rear.

So I'm getting some Yokohama Advans instead.

damn, that's a rip off.
Same tyre's from US will cost you $700 AUD ($740 USD) plus shipping.

Even if shipping is $200, you are still better off

Nardi330 09-13-2012 12:45 PM

I got some Falken 452 from Sydney for around $800. 225/40/18 and 245/35/18

My friend brought them up for me for free.

70NYD 09-13-2012 06:31 PM

If I had this car, I'd be getting fk452's in a 235 or 245 all around to maximize handling
I'm not a fan of staggered, but that's just my stupid opinion (I don't like not being able to rotate tires back to front, already bad enough I can't side to side due to rotational threads lol)

For falkens for anyone in Brisbane I would reccomend keith4wheels. Very knowledgable and helpful and prices were great last time I went there.

Z86 09-14-2012 02:57 AM

The Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 was the other one I've been looking at.
Got quoted $295 for 235/40/18, price jumps about $50 each for 225/40/18 which is my preferred size.

GC GTS Aero Kit 09-14-2012 03:00 AM

I am going to run Federal 595 RSR Semis in 265/35R18 on the 9.5" Rears ($265)
and I am running Federal 595 RSR Semis in 225/40R18 on the 8.6" Fronts ($225)
These tyres are on the limit of size increase you can go legally in QLD so check with each state as to what is legal.

You can get them from Option1Garage I found them on the net cheap prices :)

Hey Guys

Got for sale a set of 4 Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetric 2 in 225/40 R18 88Y
These have done 0km - still have the labels on them.

Brought these for the wife's Skoda, but she needs a load rating of 91 or higher, only because her car can theroetically do 200+km/h.
But these are perfect for all you non turbo guys running 18's (double check your size requirement)

These are one of the best performing tyre out there http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Go...ymmetric-2.htm

Ive been quoted $427 from goodyear and $440 from beaurepaires a corner.

Im selling all 4 for $1100 pickup, Postage at buyers expense.

Thanks for looking
They are in Qld.

RSR595 are not semi slicks. They are classified as high performance.

However good tyres had them on my 400rwkw supra and they were awesome.

This, your right
But nearly every person I talked to thinks they are
May I ask why they are legal limit? Width? Or wheel diameter
