What tires do you want?

As many enthusiasts are particular about the tires they put on their car, what model tire would you like to see as standard from the factory? I'm hoping summer tires will at least be an option! I'd like to see something like Star Specs, or similar. Would suck if they put garbage rubber on there, adding $600+ to the price you pay bc your first stop is the tire shop.

(Subaru did this with the WRX - the RE92's were horrible and resulted in the abs going off rather often, along with poor cornering grip. Just about anything was better than those.)

blur 08-24-2011 09:18 PM

Falken 912s? I have em on my car. They seem to do the job.

Ryuu0u 08-24-2011 09:27 PM

I'm guessing whatever tire you see on the TC is what will probably come with the car. Can't expect much from a cost effective price point as well as trying to appeal to the "do it your self" crowd. Decent rims would be nice though.

I'm going to give the Falken RT-615K's a shot. I have Kumho V700's on the RX, but I barely squeeze 3,500 miles out of them.

chulooz 08-24-2011 11:23 PM

I think the STI's run Dunlop sp sport 600s or close to it, so that might be in an option pack on the BRZ side since subaru already has the hookup, thus maybe scion will get it?

Franisco 08-25-2011 12:06 AM

Bridgestone Potenza RE-11

Dave-ROR 08-25-2011 12:46 AM

Rs3 or ad08

why waste your time? the star specs are at least as grippy and alot cheaper. as far as performance street tires, if they have the star spec in the size you want i dont know why you would want something else...unless you are worried about best times in rain or something.

4agze 08-25-2011 12:53 AM

Last time i played on my AE86 on a mt i just got a Ventus R-S3, and i've been a falken RT-215 to RT-615 and I'll say R-S3 i'm loven' it

Zeero 08-25-2011 01:15 AM

I hope they put something decent on the car; some RE010's would do.

Type[R]+ 08-25-2011 01:34 AM

Toyo R888's all the way!

Giccin 08-25-2011 04:31 AM

Going to use up all the trend of the stock tires... :p

But Bridgestone or Falken. :> Or... Yokohama even... or Toyotires! I have no big preference.. unless someone wants to make me sway towards a brand. haha

EJ20 08-25-2011 06:01 AM

I'd like to see bridgestone re11 or something similar from yoko or toyo :)

virobloc 08-25-2011 07:00 AM

I'd like to see Michelin Pilots or Pirelli P Zeros. They have the best compomise between duration and grip, to me.

I'm not really sure, but I think that (at least here in Europe) Michelin and Bridgestone groups are the official tire providers for Toyota. Then, I guess the 86 will wear one of those.

Neutral_Eyes 08-25-2011 07:54 AM

I expect something like a G-Sport or an S-Drive to come standard. It's summer year-round here, so I wouldn't bother with an all-season. Continental DW would be nice to see. I'll end up throwing RE-11s on, or something similar.

Sip 08-25-2011 09:50 AM

Giving it a top notch street tire would give the car some good performance numbers for magazines. I recall GM did this with the cobalt SS when it came out. I woulnt be surprised to see Bridgestone re11 on the car at least in Japan. Yokohama is another safe bet as far as brands go.

bofa 08-25-2011 10:13 AM

Rims/tires will probably be the first thing to go, so I don't really care that much. I have to say though that I'm not a big fan of Potenzas and could live without them.

Geard 08-25-2011 10:22 AM

Yokohama S-drives or Ad08, either way I'll put them on with the new wheels:) I loved my Ad07's wet and dry performance were awesome.

Random_Art 08-25-2011 10:59 AM

Depends on what I can get a good deal on when I start looking at rims. I don't really hold brand loyalty, but I've had good experiences with Falkens on my Celica.

oneday 08-25-2011 11:43 AM

You guys are out of your minds if you think Toyota is going to ship a $23K car with R888, RE11s, RS3, AD08s or anything with a <200 UTQG.

Ugh. The only thing 912s do is stay round for a long time. Not remotely a performance tire.

S-Drives are a realistic possibility...and wouldn't be terrible...

I am very much anti-all season tires. I am a firm believer in summer tires in the summer, winter tires in the winter. I just put a set of Contintal ECDW on my tC and I must say they are actually really nice for being a pseudo-all season roller. Not a summer tire, not an all season...somewhere in between...even though Tire Rack calls them a "Max Performance Summer" I would definitely call them a "High Performance All Season."

^What they said (but I'll probably get RS3 since I was really happy with those).

Combination of old habits and their track record. I've been riding around on Kumho's for the better part of a decade now and I love em. They're only bested by the A6s, but the V700s last 3 times longer and cost 50% less. I used to run Kumho SPT's on my spare set of wheels around town, but I sold those off.

Aki 08-25-2011 02:22 PM

Well I think the standard tire will be some crappy all-seasons, which is fine. I don't want a super-expensive tire to drive up the MSRP.

you should look into the star spec. its not the fastest street tire but its not too far off the pace and i think that the predictable breakaway characteristics make it more forgiving and consistent. plus they are super cheap, especially when combined with tire racks instant rebates. either way im excited to see how street tires are advancing lately. really closing in on the r compounds without giving up much streetability

I have about another 1k miles left on these, I'll give them a look see.

I've had Star Specs. Great tire. Couldn't find anything better for the price.

At a higher price point, I liked the Bridgestone Potenza RE050. Also a great tire.

Marrk 08-25-2011 02:57 PM

^^ Keeping in a mind that a "great tire" on one car might not be so great on another car.

WolfpackS2k 08-25-2011 03:21 PM

^^The Star Specs are superior to the RE050 in every way except possibly wet grip. And they're about 25% cheaper to boot.

I put Star Specs on my S2000 and don't plan on ever looking back. Amazing grip, and somehow they're going to last 20,000 miles including 6 track days.

There's no way the FT-86 would come with Star Specs, but it's nice to think that they could offer a summer tire option from the factory so save some of us the trouble of chucking the tires as soon as we buy the car.

enc0re 08-25-2011 03:28 PM

I've had a really good time with Continental ContiTouringContacts. They last, aren't noisy, and give a nice performance/comfort trade-off.

Michelin, if you're not a racer. Michelin has quality in all its range.

I only got 10k mi. on my Star Specs. Maybe I drive a little hard. :D But they are great tires at a great price and, all else being equal, I would buy them again.

Levi 08-26-2011 07:59 AM

Advan AD08 when used as daily driver and A048 when only as track car on Advan TC III rims, in 18", maybe 17" if available.

WolfpackS2k 08-26-2011 08:11 AM

^^I've heard that from others, but it beats me why they don't get as good mileage as me. I drive my car fairly hard on public roads (though not in a reckless manner) and when on the track I'm always one of the fastest cars through the twisties.

Ryephile 08-26-2011 01:32 PM

While I'm not a fan of all-season tires, I'm willing to bet they'll be standard on both brands' version of the FT-86. There might be a "summer tire option", but they'll be something mediocre like the Bridgestone RE050A.

Chances are the OEM's requirements for a factory-fit tire are too strict in terms of steering numbness and quiet ride to be able to offer anything out there that has desirable performance characteristics. In the end, it's better that everyone deal with crappy/cheap all-seasons coming stock, throwing them aside, and putting on our individual favorite tires.

I imagine the Yokohama S.drive and Conti ExtremeContact DW being a popular summer option as they're overall quite good and reasonably priced. The more hardcore options would be the Hankook R-S3, then Toyo R888, then Hoosier R6.

Personally, since this would be my daily, I'd have a set of winter tires [likely on stock wheels] and a set of summer tires on hot/light wheels. Since I already have a track car, the summer tires I'd pick would be something well-rounded like the Conti Extreme DW.

OldSkoolToys 08-26-2011 02:27 PM

I have a set of Advan's on my AE86...uh, can't remember the model number. Very good all around performance and currently a so-so tread life. See if I can't get those.

Huh? Since when would an automaker want a car to have steering numbness? That might be something you want in a Buick or Toyota Avalon, but definitely not in a sports coupe.:party0030:

pepper ronni 08-26-2011 10:01 PM

all-seasons? no one drives that shit over here and carcompanys don't equip cars with them. normally we get fairly good summertires and optional wintertires. so i don't care much about what tires we'll get. i just hope they fit the character of the car.

Steering numbness is just a side effect. NVH is a major factor on a showroom car.

I think we'll be lucky if we get something like bridgestone 050's, they came stock on quite a few Japanese performance cars. They are a decent tire.

It's very common in the US to have All-season tires. Winter tires should be more common but they aren't.
