FR-S/BRZ Engine Swap Ideas...

If you had to/were compelled to yank the 4U-GSE/FA20 from your FR-S/BRZ, what would you swap in as a replacement?

Personally, I would love to swap in a V8 (either the Toyota 2UR-GSE from a Lexus IS-F or a Ford 5.0l Coyote from the Mustang GT).

cobrabyte 09-10-2012 10:08 AM

If the electronics were possible, I'd go with a 2UR-GSE, as well. Since that's not really possible without factory support, it's looking like a Coyote or just an EJ25x.

I'd like to see the Coyote motor make it into at least a few of these cars... could be interesting!

A truly interesting swap would be a 2.2l Mazda Skyactiv-Diesel. It puts out 173hp at 4,500 rpm and 310 ft/lbs of torque at 2,000 rpm.

Wes B. 09-10-2012 12:44 PM

Motus KMV4: 1.6l V4, 161 hp at 7,800 rpm, and 122 ft/lbs of torque at 4,500 rpm.

The awesome thing about this engine is that it's literally half of an LS7.R, just downsized. Like typical Chevy small blocks, the KMV4 is supposed to be incredibly simple and easy to work on.

I5 20v from the audi S2... lightweight, compact package and a bottom end that can handle over 1200 hp. But the best part really is the sound...

VSGTS14 09-10-2012 02:39 PM

EJ25 with sti 6 speed tranny.

That should be a pretty nifty swap. What is your E36 currently running?

No lol its a 325is... 190hp, 5 speed RWD with LSD. It's the closest thing I can have to an FR-S right now.

Aaaahhh...E36 encompasses a plethora of engine and trans options.

Yes, including the LS V8! but honestly it's so overdone... and too expensive for my taste. I also have the option of swapping a 2JZ or 1JZ too.

I meant that BMW E36's had a lot of different engine options straight from the factory (1.6l I4, 1.8l I4, 1.9l I4, 2.0l I6, 2.5l I6, 2.8l I6, 3.0L I6, 3.2l I6). Honestly, the cheapest, most reliable, and one of the most powerful options would be the 2JZ.

Yea thats true. But power is not the only thing Im looking for. Im going to be looking to minimize heat soak and space to work on the engine, as well as better weight distribution and less overall weight.

Guff 09-10-2012 10:26 PM

B18C.

Lol, JK, 2JZ of course!!!

Bounce 09-10-2012 10:31 PM

F131 with redesigned airbox :)

LSxJunkie 09-11-2012 12:01 AM

Boosted Gen IV Vortec 5300. Because make all the power.

Synack 09-11-2012 02:02 AM

I wonder if an LFA motor will fit ;)

Haha...can a B18C even be made to work in a longitudinal position?

A 2J would be epic, and I know it's been done. Can anyone link photos/videos/threads of a 2J swap here?

This would be epic on all levels! It'd be tough as hell to make work though...

A potent dime-a-dozen motor, but not much imagination.

With enough time, money, and know how, it can be done (but I doubt it ever will).

K20 because VTech? Trolololol.

I like the overall engine, but can it be used in a longitudinal setup as opposed to the transverse setup already implemented into various Civics, Integras, and Accords?

Jimbo 09-11-2012 01:37 PM

Hartley V8? But you have it bass-ackwards. The Suburu new engine looks to be a legandary addition - I'd rather think about what cars this new engine would make better.

New MR2 with the FA20 boxer would be epic! Mini Porche anyone?

A Hartley would be fantastic in this car!

I never said anything negative about the Subaru engine. I know it's capable of incredible things, but this thread was started to simply get the creative juices flowing.

Imagination is for suckers. It's one of the rare things in this world that will be cheap, fast, and reliable. Enjoy your cake.

curious to see if the FB20 turbo motor that's in the Legacy will find its way into this car.

I have a feeling it will be a common swap years down the line

baldolera 09-11-2012 05:01 PM

13B or a 20B... maybe even a 26B?

WingsofWar 09-11-2012 07:39 PM

20B n/a sounds pretty awesome.

It just won't be that unique because it seems as if every car has had a Chevy small block swapped into it at one time or another.

(BTW, I am a huge fan of Chevy small blocks.)

All are valid choices for the rotary enthusiast...of which I am not, but I would still love to see the swap happen.

Don't care. Unique is the last of my priorities if it drives well.

What does everyone think about an Ecoboost 35 swap?

Wes B. 09-14-2012 01:20 PM

Ford's saying that they're going to release Ecoboost crate engines before the end of 2012! This coud be a viable and interesting swap!

mact 09-14-2012 01:45 PM

The turbocharged version of the FA20.

ST185RC 09-14-2012 01:47 PM

2UR-GSE sounds like a fine swap.
