For grins...taking my FR-S to the dragstrip.

So I've decided to run my car at the drag strip(San Antonio Raceway) in a couple of weeks. Normally I would run my Mustang, but it's apart getting a new wiring harness, so I think I'll see what this thing will do. I know that straightline performance is not it's thing, but it should be fun...
VSC on, or off? Launch RPM? Anybody run theirs at the track? Except Don?

CBR600RR 09-07-2012 12:34 AM

Everything off, launch at 4.5k rpm, then pound those gears like your GFs dad is minutes from arriving home.

Edit: my best time is 14.78 @95... All stock, no weight reduction besides the tank being just above empty.

Gives me something to shoot for....

SuperDave 09-07-2012 01:20 AM

take out the tools and the spare tire!

For grins, or did you want to read a good book on the way down the 1/4 mile. It's a fun car to drive, but waiting for it to hit 95mph... You could probably check your email, and tweet gear changes on your iPhone in real time and still have time to scroll through the radio stations looking for a good tune. Maybe make a club sandwich to eat while driving back on the return trip.

zooki 09-07-2012 03:17 AM

Aaw, I know it ain't fast, but maybe I'll just bomb the brackets. A little more challenging in a manual car, but until I get my '69 back together it'll have to do...(:

My prediction, OP will bog and run a 16.1

My prediction, on his third run of the night he will throw a CEL.

Having fun > caring what other people think.

i'd say try with everything on, then sport, then everything off. if you can't get the hang of launching with everything off, you may have better luck with all on. I actually could get a better launch in the mini with traction on than off. (itty bitty 175-65 R15s don't have very much grip at all even after trying to use the burn out pit)

GingerExtract 09-09-2012 12:39 PM

Electronic traction control is never good for straight line racing. The only "traction control" you should use is the modulation of your right foot.

Wes B. 09-09-2012 01:49 PM

Have fun, and let us know how you run!

Captain Insano 09-09-2012 06:49 PM

Interested in this topic for sure. I know it's not a fast car in a straight line, but need to gauge straight line performance somehow and then after mods like light weight and performance you can go back and see if anything is "really" making performance after the change. I'm also wondering how much of a difference (good or bad) the auto paddle shifting trans will make compared to regular MT.

Post up how you do!!

Took it to a local 1/8th in the mountains of SW Virginia. Was my first time launching/racing a RWD car. Did it for fun. Ran with 3/4 tank of gas, the junk in the trunk, and a female passenger.

Perfect reaction time is a .5
best run of the night:

r/t: .9934 (Don't care, lol. I could consistently get .5xxx and low .6xxx in my old car)
60ft: 2.2968
330ft: 6.6722
1/8et: 10.2495
@ 70.18mph

fastest trap was 70.25mph

And yes.... very slow

I got $5 on that....lol

either way have a blast. I'm just jealous I can't run mine

jdzumwalt 09-18-2012 10:33 AM

These cars are so slow. It's an embarrassment to take them to the drags. Put a big ass turbo on it built it take off those low profile tires. Run in the 10's all day long. Keep the stock suspension too it will have much better weight transfer for the launch.

LOL.....

A few grand + $6 entry or $6?

I'll stick with the $6 and run stock. But that's just me. Besides, going with and racing against friends makes it more fun. Also, this car is like a miata, easy as hell to run consistently and do bracket racing for a chance to win $

zooki 09-19-2012 09:53 PM

Well, at the track. No CEL, but the best I've run so far is a 15.51. Launching at 4 grand and granny shifting. Best MPH around 94, so there's room for improvement. It's tricky launching a no torque monster like this...LOL

Captain Insano 09-19-2012 10:03 PM

Thanks for posting the results and glad to hear no CEL. Curious, what altitude and what was weather like? Both of those are a big factor too, besides how your launch/shift points were hit/missed.

zooki 09-19-2012 10:51 PM

The altitude is 600', the temp is about 80F.
Update, best time 15.26@94 MPH. Launching at 3500-4000, shifting at 7000. 3/4 tank of gas, all the junk in the trunk, plus a powered Bazooka 8' sub and a bag of car cleaning products. I was solo, so didn't have anywhere to leave the stuff if I took it out, plus I'm lazy.
Still no CEL. Had a BRZ show up, so we ran against each other. Car #9 is me. He had never run at a dragstrip before, so I had an unfair advantage.http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...30501656_n.jpg

GingerExtract 09-20-2012 12:55 PM

Your 60' is soft, drop that down to a 2.1-2.2 and you'll be in the 14's all day.

zooki 09-20-2012 03:04 PM

Yea, it's a fine line launching something with these crappy tires, even with a prepared track. Im used to launching on slicks. It was either bog or spin. But, I'm happy for the first time out with the car.

jstn 09-20-2012 04:16 PM

Everything off, launch at 4.5-5k, ride out the wheel spin so it doesn't bog down, and enjoy the next 14 seconds or so I guess. Honestly I can't imagine it would be that much fun in this car.

Captain Insano 09-20-2012 08:38 PM

Yep, altitude makes a huge difference for sure. I think you did pretty good zooki considering you left all that stuff in your car. And glad there is no CEL still too!!
