take out rear seats; replace battery with smaller light weight one; replace pulley; debadge the FR-S bc its only glue with fishing wire or dental floss; intake; catback ; header; ecu
I like the stock shift knob :/ |

Enjoy the car first and foremost. Take it out on some twisty roads for a full day.
Let the engine break-in and take time to bond with the car in its current form. Then, when you are ready for MODs, consider keeping your FRS exterior stock (a sleeper) so don't attract cops, etc. engine mods are already available. Since the BRZ and the FRS engines are the same, you can use these parts: http://www.japanparts.com/db/partsli...maker=&VOLKEY= I am considering quite a few parts on this site too. Congratulations on your new FRS. You are one lucky 17 year old. |

Is this your first car?

Easiest mod to start off with. It can add up to 50hp and no I'm not joking just make sure you install to your fuel tank.

..or had the money to do that. |
Seventeen, huh?
Drive the car conservatively for a while. Get used to the handling characteristics of a rear wheel drive car. After a few thousand miles, you'll know exactly what to modify. |
No mods, enjoy it. It's fast enough for 17. I had a pos 93 accord as my first car for 9 years and that was fast enough to get me into lots of trouble. Enjoy it stock for a while so when you eventually modify it you can truly notice and appreciate the difference.

I've already ordered the first mod for my yet to arrive FR-S. I ordered the Subaru BRZ deck lid liner that cleans up the appearance of the deck lid, especially from the interior when the back seats are folded down. It's a standard item on the Subie but not included on the FR-S and completely interchangeable.
|
Debadge and while you are at it, move the engine behind the front seats and slap a Yamaha sticker on the long block so the car becomes the MK IV MR2. Yeah baby.
|
I just turn 17 this year and my dad signed for my FR-S.
Not really a big deal.. ha Congrats! :D |
Seventeen, huh?
I am not too far off age wise, so i'm not hating, I just have a few words of advice. Before you make this car a money pit with upgrades, you have to do the most important upgrade first. A driver upgrade. By this, I mean to get acquainted with the car, and more specifically, RWD. Go to AutoX events, and go to driver school events in your car and learn not only how to drive fast, but how to do so while being safe and attentive to what your car is doing. I have been in hairy situations myself in RWD cars because of that young kid 'infallibility' idea that so many of us have (and sometimes carry into our older years...). Losing traction is no joke if you don't know how to handle it. One thing i'll suggest for you is to keep the driver aids on on the street and don't do stupid, illegal shit. Keep it for the track, where it's more fun anyways. tl;dr, Go AutoXing and go to HPDE's where you can learn about your car. And, most importantly, enjoy the hell out of it! |
I won't hate on the kid since we have no clue if his parents actually bought him the car
I got a good 6 years on you but had enough money saved up at 17 that I could of bought this car myself (tho I would of had no money afterwards) The car is good enough until you improve those driving skills. Tho I would debadge, intake and exhaust just cause I'd like my car to sound mean as it looks 1st RWD car? |
Just as everyone else has said - Enjoy the car first. Get a feeling for it before doing anything else. Learn how a RWD drive behaves. (Somewhere safe of course.)
Also I don't think all that weight reduction is necessary unless your doing some serious racing and absolutely need to shave some pounds. Just my 2 cents. Some simple mods that go a long way are debadging/rebadging (to Toyota) the car and changing the interior/license plate lights out for some LEDs. Changing the exhaust tips wouldn't hurt either. Stock ones look to small against the exhaust openings on the bumper IMO. |

Not only could it be his first rwd car but also his first car period. comprende? ;) |
Or...you could leave it the hell alone and just enjoy it!
|
I'm going to go against the grain here and say: as someone who's been 17 with a sporty car before and done some stupid stuff regarding both mods and driving I can't help but hope that this 17 year old possesses the capacity to learn from the mistakes of others.
So my advice. Don't mod. Don't mod the car, mod the driver. Playing the game is so much more fun then polishing the equipment and becoming the best player on the field is more rewarding then being the best fan in the stands IMHO. 1: Buy a Go-Pro or equivalent camera with suction cup mount 2: Buy an AiM SOLO and suction cup mount 3: Buy a comfortable SA2010 Helmet, driving gloves and shoes 4: Go register at driving schools at your local race track and really learn to "drive". Learning how to rev-match, how to heel-toe, apex, trail brake and initiate a controlled slide will be vastly more enjoyable then a different set of badges. You just bought a car that is brilliant, as is and is far more capable than the pilot. Once the pilot is greater than the car, then you can consider making the car greater than it is. Pilot first, car second. |
Step 1. Buy a PS3 and a Copy of Gran Turismo 5
Step 2. Practice Driving the FR-S on the Nurburgring Nordschleife Step 3. ?????????? Step 4. Profit! |

If thats the case don't mess with the car at all Really? Kids these days don't really seem to want to drive. I got to driving as soon as I could :D |

Wow thanks for all the advice guys!
Yes this is my first car, so yes to the rwd question as well. It's not a manual though /: i think all i'm going to do now is play with the lights and maybe change the badges. Thanks for the opinions. :) cheers |
