Vandalism !? (rant)

Anyone else been an unfortunate victim of their beloved FRS being vandalized !?

Happen to go catch a movie at 10pm last night, I usually park away from any other vehicles in fear that someone will dent the door when they open up theirs (as much of us are), but not so far out that it becomes ridiculous. Come back out to my car after the movie and another couple, whose BMW M3 was parked a spot behind mine, was also broken into. Driver side window gone :mad0260::mad0259::paddle: Nothing thankfully stolen, not that there's much inside to steal at this point. However I do wish we had a lock for our glove compartment as they did open that up and threw all of my loan/insurance paperwork around.

I've had her all of 2 weeks and she's been mostly in the shop due to the feared CEL/idle problem (which is thankfully fixed, so far ..) and now this. :sigh: I seriously hope this has not happened to anyone else !! and never does !

(okay, end of rant now.)

travace 09-05-2012 12:44 PM

i feel your pain :(

and just a note to all possible thief's that might be lurking the boards.... these cars have no room or compartments for valuables so dont bother with this car

exactly! the Scion binder they give you at time of purchase takes up the whole glove compartment anyway, lol. :bonk:

And just the heads up, god forbid anyone else has this problem, the windows are taking quite some time to come in as the vehicle obviously being brand new, they only have 7 windows (driver-side) country-wide being distributed right now. and now the waiting (yet again ...) begins !

pyro530 09-05-2012 12:52 PM

Yeah, I'm thinking about getting a dash cam more and more every day.

DarkSunrise 09-05-2012 12:57 PM

This is one downside of parking far away from other cars -- you attract attention to your car if it's sitting out there all alone.

anteater86 09-05-2012 12:58 PM

I too have been a victim of a**hole vandals... though I admit my damage is not as bad.

I went to my friend's house the night after I got my fr-s and parked it outside of his street along the curb (I was there for no more than 45 minutes). This is a residential area and in a pretty safe city. Along this curb there are six cars parked, once of which is a fairly new 2-door M3. Guess what? My car was the only one that got egged, bad. These degenerates basically unloaded a dozen eggs onto my car at point-blank range leaving circular scratch marks where the eggs impacted the car.

I waxed the car to see if it would help, but who knew that eggshells could scrape off the clear-coat layer? ...

I was so livid. I'm not one to ever promote violence, but had I caught them in the act, fists were going in faces.

dura1198 09-05-2012 01:18 PM

Unfortunately the only failsafe way I have found to avoid vandalism is to drive my wife's civic.

Mango22 09-05-2012 01:25 PM

Coming out of the movie and finding your car like that must have made you pretty angry, I would have been. Hope you car is fixed quickly so you can ge back to enjoying the drive.

An another note, I have no tolerance for people who damage someone elses car. I'd crack them right in their noggin. Effing a-holes.

True. Which is why I have been pretty careful with it. I was only parked a row behind all the other cars, just made sure to space myself where no one else was parked in the spots directly to the left and right to avoid dents in doors, ect. Oh well, guess I will now be parking as close to buildings as possible, lol. Thank god for free glass coverage in Mass is all I can say !

Still just as bad man, sorry to hear !!! :mad0260: It's awful what people will do to vehicles. My last vehicle (07 Mazda6) which was pretty heavily modded, never got touched. I knew this car was going to attract some BS like this just due to the fact it looks super expensive, but in the first few weeks of taking ownership, ugh. :sigh: I already had my supervisor (I work for my insurance company) lower my Comprehensive deductible to the minimum, just in case ..

I was so livid when I came outside. I also have ZERO tolerance for that crap, its unbelievable. Had they been outside when I came out ... :paddle: ha.
And thank you ! they are saying at least a week if not longer, before the new window comes in but I am just thankful it wasn't worse then what it was at least and that there was no body damage.

jstans84 09-05-2012 03:43 PM

And that's one of the reasons I open carry a gun. Typically people will stake out parking lots (at least here in Atlanta) to see which car would be best to rob. They see you get out of the car with a gun on your side and they don't touch it of even think about touching it.

ravenMTgirl 09-05-2012 09:10 PM

Sorry to hear about your car  hopefully your new window will come in quickly!

I had something happen to mine too. I have a small dent on the edge of the roof right above the driver window. It totally looks like someone slammed it with their fist. :brokenheart: I've been driving hubbys 4x4 a lot more often since I got this car.

Splat 09-05-2012 09:18 PM

Lock valuables in trunk and disable it. (ofcourse do this before you get to where u r going so that people do not see you doing it) Never lock a glove box, that thing is expensive and you would have to pay for it to get fixed due to deductable. Reminder, do not leave your wheel lock lug key in glove box either. Find a better spot, like trunk by spare tire.

Screwdriver + trunk lock + 2 seconds = open trunk

The only secure storage in a car is a bolted safe or crafty concealment.

Well, kinda obvious if they are going to bring tools, nothing is going to be safe.......however, you can limit damage of casual idiots breaking windows for change and cd's

True.

A clean, empty car with nothing in sight is a good method. Or, a nasty filthy car loaded with empty fast food bags, books, and other trash.

I've been eyeing a bolt down pistol safe for the car. It opens quickly, it's secure, has a slim profile and a good place to stash things. Cheap too. They run about $45.

mact 09-05-2012 09:37 PM

I think this car attracts a large amount of attention, both wanted and unfortunately, unwanted. If and when I do purchase this car, I will learn to hope for the best but also plan and expect the worst.

It would be glorious to have a vandal caught red handed. Glorious.

attending a movie unfortunately tells the assholes that YOU are inside for approximately 2 hours or so,this is all they need to "open" your car up!
knowing you won't be out for a while makes 'em full of "nuts" to do the "bad"
thing on your car! addicts, and fu**ed in the head! just sayin'

I think there's more to it than that. Probably a jealous neighbor or someone who simply doesn't like him? How many girlfriends has he had recently for example? One of their ex's or one of his.

I've never heard of people egging a specific car type unless it's an SUV with panda seats and baby seal eyes for headlights. It just seems more likely to be specific to the owner than the vehicle itself. Someone knew it would piss him off, and it did.

Wolfking 09-06-2012 04:22 AM

As far as the vandalism stuff goes, I really don't think people are targeting your cars specifically. I had my Legacy broken into for about a couple dollars in change in my armrest. The people that do this don't care about what car they're breaking into, just what's inside.

Fixed that for you.

A gun isn't going to do anything for you at all if you're like me and you're standing around looking at tools in Sears, while your wife and child are off looking at something else (probably horribly boring, which is why I'm looking at tools :D) and your car is parked on the other side of the mall lot, which would at least take several minutes to get to. Or in the OP's case, where you're watching a movie and are out of the picture for an hour and a half, maybe more. Typical smash n grabs take less than a minute. Maybe a little more if they decide to yank your stereo. By the time you get there the thief will be long gone. Combine that with the fact that a lot of the delinquents I know also carry, and you're looking at getting into a shootout over what, an empty glove box?

I'm not saying don't carry. I'm just saying that this is a bad excuse to do so.

OP, sucks to hear. Sounds like it wasn't targeted vandalism and was just a smash n grab job, hence the other car being hit too. Hope it gets fixed soon.

It has worked so far for me. I open carry to help deter crime. Personally I think everyone who legally can carry should. It would help cut down crime rates.

Actually, it wouldn't. But you would find the rates of accidental shootings going up!

Actually it would. Look at Chicago and Washington D.C., when the gun bans there were lifted the crime rate in both cities plummeted. More guns = Less crime.

Now back to the actual topic at hand.

Mine was as clean as it could possibly be, not a single extra item in the vehicle. Nothing but insurance paperwork and the huge Scion binder in the glove compartment. Either way, this car as we all know, is going to attract both good and bad attention as Mact stated, unfortunately.

Thank you, and no definitely not targeted - just a smash n grab. Unfortunate either way, lol. I would have been a lot more worried if it was just my car, that is for sure !

Tanuki 09-06-2012 01:48 PM

This is why I leave my car unlocked and never leave anything of value in the car. I would rather you go through my car, find nothing and leave, than smash my windows then find nothing and leave.

Oh and who cares if the car is stolen, that is why you have full coverage insurance.

jonnyquest 09-06-2012 01:51 PM

That sucks I'm sorry. Thieves are the worste thing on the planet. Had my car stolen the first day I moved to PHX. AZ. when I was going to school. Basterds.

RRnold 09-06-2012 01:55 PM

Sorry to hear! With all of the attention these cars are getting, owners need to be a lot more careful where they drive and especially where they now park. :bs:

Christina_Marie 09-06-2012 02:16 PM

Just throwing it out there, if anyone good with wiring/electric components knows, will the fact that I have no window in the driver side effect the passenger side ? I can't roll down the passenger side from the driver side switches and I'm worried that something else besides just the glass was damaged (it was literally pouring rain out when this happened, and I don't know how long the car sat outside like that before I came out after the movie :bs:)

Again, I have not the slightest idea with that type of stuff, still learning ! All the locks still work perfectly fine for both doors. I'm not sure how closesly linked together the door functions and windows are. I am hoping when they put the new window in the functions for window up/down work perfectly again for both windows ... ugh. Any insight from you smart guys out there would be awesome !!

jarviz 09-06-2012 02:55 PM

this is why the most expensive thing in my car is the ipod cord... and bumper guard which never comes out of the trunk
