Turbo kit campaign

We have a group of fabricators and tuners that are in the midst of development of a turbo kit for the FR-S. I cannot release too much exact information right now, but I can answer questions and get concerns to the developers.

What would you guys like to see? How much do you want to spend (realistically) ? Anything else you would like developed at the same time? Who would still daily drive theirs after being turboed? Would you still worry about mpg?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. And we will always remember who helped in the beginning.

subatoy 08-31-2012 11:41 PM

If this is legit, I always look at AVO as an example.
they have a turbo kit for the Subaru Impreza for $3,200 which to me sets the bar for price. their quality and reliability is outstanding so lets start there.

I'd say low PSI kits for those who want to keep all other components stock. I would love to see a study on a variety of turbos with Dyno results to study what works better for this engine.

TheChopShop 08-31-2012 11:45 PM

We are real! Very adamant about building the best for the FR-S/BRZ. We hope to be unveiling our prototype at SEMA this year. Having a finished product for purchase by first quarter of 2013.
We are also developing a custom turbo for this application. Something that will keep the fun of the car and add the "extra" we all seem to want.

subatoy 09-01-2012 12:03 AM

This is exciting! I would suggest UEL headers too, they add the character this car has lost with it's exhaust sound.
a stealth set up is also welcome by peope who live in those states with dumb laws.

I personally wouldn't mind having a turbo you can show off to people which means something acccessible as ou open the hood. But I'm fine with anything.

I'm all about the cost honestly, I really hate the idea of paying 1/5 of the price of the car on just the kit without considering installation etc.

what do you guys have in mind???

subatoy 09-01-2012 12:05 AM

oh yeah that custom turbo idea sounds GREAT!

I can safely say that a lot of people would be very happy if you could retain NA drivability, meaning a steady power band without a kick on the face at 5k rpm!

This car SUCKS at low end stock. especially in the real world applications just driving around st. and stuff.
you can't even pass minivans with the damn thing!

usptwins 09-01-2012 12:20 AM

How about a short shifter? Short throw shifter as well? As far as the turbo kit goes, I amoung others would like to spend less than $10xxx on less than 500rwhp... Personally i like the big surge of boost from a collosal turbo setup. Just something that can be tammed by the respectable driver. Another thing to look at, would possibly be a custom intake manifold, something that can flow excellent with a rather large turbo and can handle the pressure. How about aftermarket cam gears? And mild cams? Just food for thought.... Thanks guys. BTW, whats the name of yall's shop and the location?

gmookher 09-01-2012 12:23 AM

Ok
5k
Warranty
Not open wastegate
Intercool for phoenix
285 whp
Multi map via ecUtek or haltech

Flat Black VW 09-01-2012 12:32 AM

I agree with pretty much everything Subatoy said. Reliable, low boost(this car doesn't NEED a lot more power for a lot of us), stock internals, something I can show off but still looks factory-ish, and in my opinion UEL headers would be great.

Short shifter would be awesome too like usptwins said.

NO DULL ON THROTTLE RESPONSE ;)

TheChopShop 09-01-2012 01:59 AM

The Chop Shop is our name, we are located in Washington. But we are working with companies and facilities in California, Oregon, and Colorado.
Here is our list of requirements that we have put on this campaign
Keep stock internals, full factory warranty, variable power bandwidths, raise tq and hp as equally as possible while keeping reliability, better exhaust note, keep HVAC, radiator upgrade, and maybe an exhaust system.
We welcome all ideas and criticisms.
We have also been in discussion for an all FR-S weekend in Vegas. With some Las Vegas Motor Speedway track time. Anyone interested in this? Should I make a post about this as well?

earthsscum 09-01-2012 03:08 AM

No bumper cutting, this is a deal breaker for me. Stealth is good and have an option to keep at least of the cats in place. Remove the post o2 sensor cat.

Tradewind 09-01-2012 03:23 AM

Have air filter in a position where ambient temp air is fed into intake system, not preheated behind the radiator air.

Give a 3 year warranty on the turbo system itself

Use reflash tunes ie ECUTEK or other (yes other exists)

Keep stock emissions

Good throttle response

Include engine oil cooler

TheChopShop 09-01-2012 03:26 AM

Yes, I agree, no body modifications whatsoever. We want to keep it completely stock looking. As though everything was there from the factory.

Tradewind 09-01-2012 03:28 AM

I forgot price

Go for $4k in a box, fitting/shipping/tuning is extra

Tuning will be something that we will be discussing in the coming weeks. The program has been written for a base map off of an undisclosable (I know this isn't a word) vehicle. It is not a Subaru of any kind, so this is an experiment for us. Should increase gas mileage.

As far as an oil cooler; we will supply the oil lines and either the fitting for the pan or a pre built pan for extra. Oil cooler would be an upgradable option as well.

And as far as your ambient air temp question; we have something in the works for that as well. Something that has never been done. *insert Dr Evil laugh here*

I am checking with everyone on the campaign to see what we can disclose to get early opinions.

usptwins 09-01-2012 04:17 AM

Well, i think yall are heading in the right direction so far. Post us a link to yall's website and we can check it out. Whoever is posting is doing a good job at taking suggestions so far lol. Just keep it for the interest of the consumer. If you keep up with everyone and post prototypes and results via dyno results, then trust will be established with good time. Thank you for the interest in what "we" want. :)

TheChopShop 09-01-2012 01:12 PM

Thank you Upstwins. We are working on our personal website now. I run 2 other businesses and we are also building cars for SEMA.
We are also making a blog and website for this campaign. With so many companies and people involved we felt it would be unfair to put it on our website alone. So we will be making a website that is only about the technology and kit itself.

tnt 09-01-2012 01:20 PM

< 4k
Reliable
Good mpg
More power at lower band

VSGTS14 09-01-2012 01:20 PM

make it a snappy turbo.

HATED1 09-01-2012 01:24 PM

I'm in Lacey, Wa If you need a "test" vehicle, :)

TheChopShop 09-01-2012 01:28 PM

We have one developer who has a BRZ and wants a Subie sound to it. Ala-STi as he puts it. Then we have others that are more for a new sound. And one who has to be different and push for a Supra style sound. What do you think?

Btw- our price max right now is 5k.

What color do you have? Any upgrades yet?

Visconti 09-01-2012 01:29 PM

Seems like we have a lot of turbo kits hitting the market now. It's going hard to compete with AVOs

Our vision is to make a kit complete for this car. Something that has never been done before. The turbo design is new, and so is the intake design. We don't want to compete, just give another option. I have been building cars and engines for 14 years, I am very excited about the ideas that are being formed and the off the wall ideas that are being explored.

drifter 09-01-2012 01:34 PM

I agree with keeping the the psi low, quality build and very reasonable price. All I ever asked from this car is a little more power. Don't want 300 hp like some of these others tb, not for me. I'm not into having to upgrad every damn thing and spending so much money I find myself in the GTR range. Bottom line; (for me anyway) keep it simple.

I'm sry what's not complete about the other turbo kits ?

I apologize for how that is worded. I was not saying the other kits were incomplete. I was saying we are designing everything specifically for this car. The turbo is being designed for this engine and to keep the integrity of the car complete.
We have looked to other companies who have already made kits for inspiration.

NemeGuero 09-01-2012 02:16 PM

Something that utilizes a cheap and commonplace turbo like a T25 or T28. And a sidemount intercooler. Cheap and perfect for an extra 50-60whp.

VSGTS14 09-01-2012 02:17 PM

the thing with AVO is that they are making a kit that renders a current motor in the japan market, knowing the design and process works. doing anything other than that, might fall on it's face and not be able to compete.

just compare p&l's and AVO when it's complete.

It's nice to see another company put something together but I still don't see how the other kits are not complete or not designed around this engine.

You make it seem like your about to do something that's never been done before

By no means am I trying to derail this thread - I just don't understand

I can't go into too much details, but we ARE doing something that has never been done. Most times a turbo kit is built around the engine with pre existing turbos. And those turbos have very different flow maps. We have spent the last 3 months studying the engine and the rpm range to develop a turbo that accommodates everything within the entire powerband.

JoeBoxer 09-01-2012 03:04 PM

I hate when these threads pop up, "we are developing a product but we can't tell you anything about it and what do you want from it?"

civicdrivr 09-01-2012 03:05 PM

I'd be happy with 250-260whp on low boost levels. Id like a nice linear power band too.

I have to keep certain aspects a secret until we finish the testing. The proprietary issues that could arise from me telling the ins and outs of the kit before we are done would stop this campaign before we could start. I hate keeping these things from you guys too. But in the next few days I will have a link for everyone and anyone to see our plans. Also, keep in mind that we are planning on unveiling at SEMA this yet. Wouldn't want to let everyone see it before our partners could show it off at SEMA.

TheChopShop 09-01-2012 03:20 PM

Who would want to go to SEMA with us? We will be holding a raffle soon.

It will be a raffle. Lol. But cheap and with everything included. Hotel, airfare, and 2 tickets to SEMA.

civicdrivr 09-01-2012 03:38 PM

Ill cover the hotel, we can forego the raffle. Just give me the tickets already! :D
